MLB Trade Rumors has joined the 21st century! I've created the official MLBTR Facebook page.
But...um...what now? I admit, I am new to Facebook. Do all of you now friend me or something? If you have a Facebook account and are my friend, are you alerted every time I make a change on mine? What's the difference between the wall and the discussion board? At any rate, this may be a decent way to get an MLBTR forum going without much work. I know a lot of you have been clamoring for that.
Anyone have any other ideas how I can use Facebook to add value for current readers, or promote MLBTR and find new readers?

Anyone got cool ideas/suggestions, drop me a line at mlbtraderumors@gmail.com.

Or just leave thoughts in the comments!

join myspace facebook sucks
Posted by: beaminack | January 07, 2008 at 10:14 PM
make a group called mlbtraderumors
then you can send messages to anyone who's in that group...or link a message to the whole group
as far as the wall goes...thats what people right on whenever they want to send you a message

myspace is for child predators.
good call on the facebook group, tim.
Posted by: thehoagster07 | January 07, 2008 at 10:18 PM
I disagree. Facebook is more professional, while myspace is cluttered and all about personal image.

It is cool that all those people have signed up as Fans...am I now supposed to add them all as Friends? What's the difference?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 07, 2008 at 10:25 PM
create a facebook group....let us know what it is so we can find, i will invite all my friends...i don't think many of them about this site....
Posted by: sporttstar | January 07, 2008 at 10:28 PM
When somebody is a friend, you can view their profiles, this is not possible when somebody simply belongs to a group.
Posted by: AdamU | January 07, 2008 at 10:30 PM
What I created, that's not a Group?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 07, 2008 at 10:34 PM
it is considered a product, groups are on the left-hand side of the window
Posted by: AdamU | January 07, 2008 at 10:39 PM
scratch that, applications are on the left side
Posted by: AdamU | January 07, 2008 at 10:40 PM
Facebook used to be so much better when it was university students only...
That said, you should look into making an application. You can sell ads that way, too.
Posted by: jatorres | January 07, 2008 at 10:44 PM
agreed, the high schoolers kinda ruin it.
Posted by: AdamU | January 07, 2008 at 10:46 PM
Also, the wall is for quick posts that anyone can see, the discussion board is more of a forum.
Is there any way you can appoint mods? Both the wall and board will get cluttered with spam before you know it.
Posted by: jatorres | January 07, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Do I appoint mods via Facebook somehow, give them the ability to delete crap?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 07, 2008 at 10:52 PM
I know you can appoint 'em in the group, not sure about the "fan" thing.
Posted by: jatorres | January 07, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Yeah, the "fan" thing is relatively new. I don't know much about it. But if you want, Tim, you can friend whoever you want from the fans...I'm sure they'll accept.
Posted by: thehoagster07 | January 07, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Ah I am starting to see that...I guess when I am bored I will just friend 'em all. Readers = friends.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 07, 2008 at 11:52 PM
hey Tim ...i know pretty much everything about facebook ...its good...facebook is alot better then myspace...
Posted by: Larsen101 | January 08, 2008 at 01:08 AM
Facebook not a bad idea. Another site that you might want to consider is www.mysportvideos.com Its a cross between facebook and youtube but strictly sports. If I remember correctly Tom Glavine is involved with the site.
Posted by: rayatl | January 08, 2008 at 07:45 AM
Get a myspace too, it can't hurt.
Posted by: Land-Man | January 08, 2008 at 08:01 AM
UGH- Myspace is just crap now with spam and all those fake people sending you friend requests that look like attractive gals but are just ads and crap. I'm on the verge of deleting my MySpace page.
And I just added you as a friend, Tim. And of course I added the group and the fan stuff.
Posted by: amishius | January 08, 2008 at 08:22 AM
Just a comment to register the "other side". I don't/won't do FaceBook, MySpace, or any of the teeny-bopper sites. If you switch to Facebook, I will lose contact with you. RSS is fine, and just what I want.

Since you are making your living off MLBTR you may want to check out http://facebookedge.com and http://h2seo.net .
Both are geared to effectively using Facebook and Web 2.0 for marketing.
Also check out http://www.bloglines.com for managing everything

Tim,
these Facebook (heretofore abbreviated as FB) pasges are meant as a product. It isn't part of FB protocol to friend your fans, though you certainly may if you wish.
Don't forget to check out the fan page for Yankees: Looking for the Future (and, of course, the blog)!
