« Reds Sign Affeldt | Main | Angelos Killed 7-For-2 Bedard/Roberts Deal With Cubs? »
Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald was able to confirm our rumor from yesterday, that the Red Sox have some interest in Brad Wilkerson. Bradford says Wilkerson, a Boras client, is looking for three years and $21MM. I don't think the Sox would go anywhere near that price.
The same source told me on Friday that the Yankees, A's, and Mariners have expressed interest in Wilkerson as well. Wilkerson, 30, hit .234/.319/.467 for the Rangers last year in 119 games (doing most of his damage at home). In his career he has played all three outfield positions plus first base.

I just don't get it. Wilkerson will turn 31 in June. He hasn't OBPed higher than .351 in the last 3 seasons. He's not particularly better against lefties or righties. Okay, he can play all 3 OF positions and 3B, and he hits for a bit more power, but he doesn't make a whole lot of sense for a bench player; what's he going to offer that the Sox couldn't get from some combo of Crisp, Moss and Kielty?

Wilkerson's never played 3B in his life, he throws lefty.
Posted by: Basura | January 19, 2008 at 07:23 PM
Oh for... sorry, I meant 1B.

Wilkerson actually might make sense for the Yankees, but not at the type of money he's looking for.
Boras is such a money-hungry b***h sometimes. He needs to get real with the performance of some his clients vs. his demands on the open market.
Wilkerson has CONSISTENTLY underperformed over the past SEVERAL years after much bigger things were expected from him, and now Boras is looking to get 21 million for him? Gimme a break.

This sounds like a typical Theo Epstein move.
Trade the youngster David Murphy, who replaces Wilkerson, and then sign Wilkerson to a huge multi year deal.
He has done it quite a few times already (Ramirez-Lugo, Sanchez-Lowell, Pena-Drew, Arroyo-Matsuzaka...and the list goes on.) so this wouldn't surprise me at all.

Nicely put Sunny.

here's hoping there's absolutely nothing to this horrible rumor!

I really don't see the appeal of Wilkerson. Are there any teams out there that would be willing to put this guy in their everyday line-up, nevermind pay him $7 mil a year?
Is Theo trying to scratch Boras' back again? (a la JD Drew?)

2 World Series wins in 4 years -- Theo must be doing something right?

I remember when Wilkerson was kicking ass for my Strat-O-Matic team a few years ago...
Best third round pick I ever had...

Lowell is better than Sanchez , Drew better than Pena, Matsuzaka better than Arroyo, so who is complaining
the article said SOME interest, which would mean he is someone they may talk to the agent for 5 minutes to see the price, anything over 2million a year, and that is it.
1B is the only reason the interest exists, and its not Murphy he would be replacing, its Hinkse, and that works for me then, its 5th outfielder.

No.

The only thing about Moss was he was going to the dominican replubic to play 1B in winter-ball, but the last time i heard, he was always exclusively in the outfield
Sox need this bench position player to play 1B.
He also might have value above 5th outfielder/ sub at 1B.

You guys are fucking gay. Tim posts a TRADE RUMOR and thats your excuse to bash Theo. You are all jealous that the Red Sox are always mentioned in the World Series when at least half of the teams out there will never be mentioned since its a waste of fucking time to think teams like the devil rays orioles brewers, teams like that will ever fucking make it.

whoa there - wait a minute.
There is NO profanity on this site.
We use symbols for words like "jealous".
Seriously though, I enjoy being a fan for the World Series Champion Red Sox as well as being a proud member of Red Sox Nation. That being said, it makes my gut churn when I use my hindsight and remember the performance we received from Eric "where did the plate go" Gagne after giving up some decent prospects who were showing that they could perform at the major league level. God bless the Brewers and their fans for turning a blind eye and think a change of scenery will do it for this stiff.

gezz jondogg come down...not all redsox fans are like the people from the above posts... just come down...MLB.com nor foxsports havent mentioned anything of Wilkerson so man come down
Posted by: Larsen101 | January 19, 2008 at 11:48 PM
take out come and put in calm

If u played a random person and told them to bat 9th, and NEVER swing at ANY pitches, they would produce the same offense as Brad Wilkerson.
If you can get that random person to play just below avg defense, and maybe steal 10 bases per season, you'd have a more useful player than wilkerson.
3 years 21 mil for that sack of sh1t. wow.....jus wow.
Posted by: bsox21 | January 20, 2008 at 01:09 AM
don't even bother discussing the amount, its just not going to happen, simply not going to happen.
Posted by: quintjs | January 20, 2008 at 01:19 AM
Wilkerson for a couple mill seems decent- he's one of the few free agents where you might actually get more than what you payed for.

That guy's post is the reason we need a real, moderated forum on here.

wilkerson will get one year at 4 million if he thinks he'll get mare he's losing his mind.
