« Odds and Ends: Interview, Felix , Fujikawa | Main | Twins Wanted Wang/Kennedy For Santana? »

Santana Contract Could Spell Sabathia Departure

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes today that a six-year extension in the $130-150MM range for Johan Santana is likely to spell an end to C.C. Sabathia's Indians career after this season.  The Indians made an offer to Sabathia in December, something probably in the range of four years and $70MM.  It would be hard for Sabathia to pass on the chance to double that total.

Sabathia does want to stay and believes negotiations for an extension are progressing (he's let his agent handle it so far).  Indians GM Mark Shapiro would probably like to avoid an in-season contract distraction but no one's suggested any deadlines out yet.

I smell Sabathia starting for the Cubs!

Well, it's not like Paul Hoynes to let the dust collect on this story. Afterall, he's been writing about how cheap Mr. Dolan is for seven years. Hoynes can do so again!! It would not surprise me, or any other readers of Indians articles to believe, Hoynes wrote this article four months ago. Please note that Hoynes has used no facts to base his position. There is no truth that can be found anywhere near this article. It is a typical Hoynes "the cleveland sports world is ending: followed by a littany of nothing to substantiate the position. NO WAY do the Indians sign CC for that much money is his claim. So.. Where is the request or requirement for the amount of money that CC won't be signed for? Did he sky hook this "fact"? This guy never changes. Remeber, last year, before the start of the season, Hoynes wanted Wedge fired and Peralta released. He's as clueless as clueless gets.

Naturally, Hoynes is only stating what "might" happen. Of course, he will be the third or fourth person to claim the Indians did a good job by signing CC if it happens. Hoynes is not well respected due to his lack of insight and objectivity. The flagship radio station for the Indians broadcasts, WTAM, 1100 AM, has a mid afternoon talker, Mike Trivisanno, who refers to this guy as a bottom feeder and scum. He's got it right.

What say you?

they'll never do this in a million years, but the phils should throw everything they have at sabathia. we need to start an arms race in the NL east!

I know Paul Hoynes has covered this team forever it seems, but he is usually quite off on his assumptions.

I also do not believe the Indians would release specific numbers involved in negotiations. I figure they will try and sign him somewhere in between what Peavy and Santana will get. Maybe $19-21M per season.

I'm still very optimistic that the Dolans will sign this guy. They have shown a lot the past year+ with Pronk and Westbrook being locked up. It may also be the reason why we haven't gone out and tried to get a big stick in the corner outfield spots. Maybe if we can't sign CC then we will try and go back to the big thumper offense, but until that happens I have faith that CC will be signed.

Hoynes is an idiot. I rejoiced when the PD brought in Pluto hoping that meant the end of Hoynes, but alas we are stick with him and his silly mustache. Also, don't forget he also predicted the Indians would finish 4th in the Central in 2007, just ahead of the Royals. Seeing as how the Indians have stated that the contract they offered Sabathia is the biggest in team history for a player one would assume it's in the range of the offer they made Manny dollar wise.

“I'm still very optimistic that the Dolans will sign this guy. They have shown a lot the past year+ with Pronk and Westbrook being locked up.”

There is no reason to think otherwise… I think Eli said it best when he called this (and other Hoynes articles) to boil down to “the sky is falling”. What we know is

A) The Indians do not do business in the media ~ they keep their cards tight to their chest.

B) CC wants to stay; he calls the place his home and says it would be so difficult to have to leave.

C) The Santana deal isnt looking like it will be as high as people expected it to be. 6YR MAX and at about 20/YR is no where near the 7Yrs and possibly 25M/YR people were proclaiming it might take. The Indians offering something in the 15-18M range a year for CC over 5 years with a 6th year option would actually be rather similar to what Santana might be getting (with a small hometown discount of course).

If anything, Santana not getting what people proclaimed he could may actually help the Indians keep Sabathia… The Mets afterall don’t want to even make it 6 from my understanding, Sabathia wont be holding out for 7 if a better pitcher is having a hard time getting more than 5…

Grinch,

"I smell Sabathia starting for the Cubs!"

Even if the Indians do look into trading CC, the Cubs and Indians are the worst possible trade matchup. The teams depth comes in the same positions, and the players the Cubs are most likely to offer would hold no interest to the Tribe...

blaha blah, cleaveland is my second home, all that is bullshyt, why would he take 17/18 a year from indians when he could get over 20 from yanks.

yanks will dump lots of cash after thiis year and need an ace, cc will be in pinstripes like it or not.

BxSquad, you sound exactly like I guy I went to school with who was convinced back after the 2005 season that the Indians would be forced to trade Sizemore to the Yanks cause there was no way they could afford him. Also, CC likes to hit and is from the west coast, if it isn't the Indians it will probably be a western NL team and the Yanks were already hesitant to pony up for Santana contract wise.

"blaha blah, cleaveland is my second home, all that is bullshyt, why would he take 17/18 a year from indians when he could get over 20 from yanks."

...uhhh, thats kind of the point ~ who says he can get 20+ from the yanks? The Yankees/Cashman said from pretty much the start that the Santana contract demands was the part that was holding up a deal from their end. And Santana doesnt seem to be a lock to get 20+ himself now, or if he does, it will be over a shorter contract than he was asking for...

Seems unlikely Sabathia would be a lock to get 20+, and if CC feels that way right now coupled with his not wanting to leave, being happy with the clubs direction and him not being all about the money as a person ~ well, I have a hard time seeing where he would be thrilled to throw away 17/18 guaranteed just to hope he might get 2M more on the open market... Might be what you hope is the case, but it doesn’t seem to hold a ton of weight at this point in time…

"blaha blah, cleaveland is my second home, all that is bullshyt, why would he take 17/18 a year from indians when he could get over 20 from yanks."

Because to certain athletes( the rare non-ego maniacs), they realize that 18 mil and 20 mil isnt a big enough difference to leave a situation where you are comfortable. It is really hard to spend 140 million in your lifetime unless you have some sort of problem. What are you going to do with that extra 10-20 mil if you get 155 instead of 140. It really is silly. Pujols took a hometown discount, why not CC? Its not liek that are going to pay him minimum wage.

"I smell Sabathia starting for the Cubs!"

Yea sure? KEEP DREAMING AS*hO**
