Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Garcia, Lohse, Colon

With a full slate of Spring Training games underway today, there are still some big names hanging out in the free agent market. After the Red Sox signed signed former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal, there are still two big-name starting pitchers that have yet to find new homes. Former all-star Freddy Garcia is not expected to be ready until mid-season after having rotator cuff surgery last fall, but may have interest from several clubs. On the other hand Kyle Lohse is still looking for work despite being perfectly healthy. His biggest ailment maybe that his agent's name is Scott Boras. With just over four weeks until opening day, let's take a look at coverage of these pitchers in the blogosphere.

If there is a topic you would like to see covered in "Baseball Blogs Weigh In" please let me know HERE.

  • Mets Fever notes that the names Garcia and Lohse keep popping up on the radar and they are not surprised considering that the Mets rotation is a crapshoot once you get past Johan Santana.
  • Sox and Pinstripes says that signing Garcia would be a smart move for the Red Sox. With Colon and Curt Schilling, Garcia would provide the Sox with plenty of second half pitching insurance.
  • Fire Brand of the American League is hoping the Red Sox will sign Garcia as they believe he will be more dependable than Colon.
  • MetsBlog can't see the Mets signing Lohse unless they can find a way to unload Orlando Hernandez. And then they would only go for a one year deal.
  • Sox & Dawgs notes the age-old baseball cliche that a team can never have too much pitching and likes the addition of Colon.
  • Bugs & Cranks says that the signing of Colon has them seeing El Guapo Deja Vu and wonder if he will be as important and beloved as another former Cy Young winner, Eric Gagne.
  • Surviving Grady notes that every good sitcom needs a fat guy and now the Red Sox have theirs in the form of Colon.

Mets Fever must be on Hallucinogens if they think "the Mets rotation is a crapshoot once you get past Johan Santana", they have quality starters in Maine, Pedro and Oliver Perez.

You took the words out of my mouth, TheKid. Two young 15 game winners and a finally healthy future HOF? Far from a crapshoot.

"they are not surprised considering that the Mets rotation is a crapshoot once you get past Johan Santana."

Last time I checked, Maine is an established staff ace. Santana just put him under the radar.

I was going to comment on that as well. Maine and Perez both had very good seasons last year and Pedro if healthy is up there with the best. There may be some question marks but it's a long way from a crapshoot.

so we all agree, we wish our teams had this kind of a crapshoot.

"Last time I checked, Maine is an established staff ace. Santana just put him under the radar."

A 3.9 ERA with a whip ~1.3 isn't an ace, especially on a big market team. He's more like a #2.

And for the record, i do think the "crap shoot" comment is silly. Just thought a comment about Maine being an ace is a bit silly too (at least right now, we'll see in a few years).

For the record, I'm a Mets homer.

I think the crapshoot comment is quasi-warranted. Pedro and El Duque are health risks. Yes Pedro looked amazing when he came back last year, but lets see how that holds up over a full season. We all know how fragile El Duque is, so I won't get into that.

Maine and Perez don't have health issues, but they don't have any consistency. With Santana, you pretty much know what you're gonna get. Perez? Not a chance. Sometimes he looks like a Cy Young runaway. Other times he looks like a total scrub. Yeah he had a good year, but can he repeat it? He hasn't shown that yet.

Same goes with Maine. While he isn't necessarily inconsistent, he doesn't have a track record. He showed great improvement last year, but let's see him sustain it for a while before we start to just expect it. Don't forget his atrocious second half last season.

All that being said... damn it feels good to be a gangster.

And a Mets fan.

Ah El Guapo, I remember him, still can see him pitch in the independant leagues. His fastball screaming past guys who couldn't even sniff the minor leagues. Still, he was quite the class act in Boston.

I'd have no problem with an El Guapo redux, people forget he was one of the top set up men in the league for a couple of years. As long as Colon isn't the 2002 version of El Guapo i'll be happy.

Mets rotation a crapshoot?

Perez and Maine won 15 games last yr and Pedro is Pedro and looks healthy.

Thats a crapshoot??

Check Perez's stats from last yr.

Stat wise hes one of the best pitchers in the NL.

And hes a 4th starter here.

Freddy Garcia would be a great pick-up for the redsox. be it not only so he can pitch in AAA for now, he could come up later/when people are injured. if nothing else he and colon could pitch in the bullpen to rest Okijima, Papelbon, and Delcarmen

"Crapshoot" is a little of an overstatement, but "worry" isn't far off. Aside from Santana, the rest are injury risks or inconsistent.

You've got:
1) Santana - No problems here.
2) Martinez - The injury risk is still there, even if he does pitch well. 180 innings might be pushing it.
3) Maine - Streaky, but more-or-less reliable. He'll get tired in the 2nd half, and it shows with his 2nd half ERA almost 2 points higher than his 1st half. Can he go 200 innings?
4) Perez - Actually, he is a crapshoot. He'll be great or terrible. He had a good year last year, and if history is any indicator, this year won't be.
5) El Duque - His arm is held together with duct tape and chewing gum. 150 innings would be a luxury.

If everyone stays healthy, it looks a lot better.

I'd also like to point out that nobody currently on the market looks like an improvement to the Mets' situation, either.

There's one thing people are not getting about Maine. He made a jump from never throwing much more than 150 innings to falling just short of 200 last season. It's possible he'll improve upon last season to be a decent number 2. Ultimately the question marks are: Is Maine only good easrly in the season? Can Pedro stay healthy and return to form? Will Perez get consistant? Will Pelfry breakout? Other than that, they're an average pitching staff with a true ace on top.

I think it is a pretty silly comment to say that El Duque's arm is held together with duct tape and chewing gum considering his arm is rubber and could prolly start one game and releive the next day. Give me another player nowadays who could do that.

Duque's arm is fine. It's his hamstrings and feet that ail him.

Mets rotation is somewhere between crapshoot and a sure thing, unbiased and informed fans would tend to edge toward the former.

Ya'll have a few health risks, a lack of depth and a lack of consistency

Please enlighten us to what rotation is a sure thing.

Do you mean Beckett and the 4 Quesiton marks?

Dice K in yr 2 after his terrible 2nd half. Wakefield? Clay I stole the laptop being a rookie. Schilling with a bad arm.

Thats a sure thing?

I will be happy to share what rotation is a sure thing.

Its a sure thing that the Marlins rotation will be crap. They have Sergio Mitre as #2. Scary!

Umm Josh, what's with the random attack on the Red Sox. He made a good point about the Mets rotation, it's wide open, it could go either way, which is kinda the nature of baseball.

But if you want to tell me your favorite team I could gladly mock it for you.
