« Odds and Ends: Hughes, Nathan, Pedro | Main | Rays Never Serious About Bonds »
Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald reports that free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia is in the Red Sox clubhouse today. He believes it's more than just a visit; the Red Sox may be evaluating his health. No signing appears close though. Garcia may have a dozen teams to choose from if he proves healthy and markets himself around June.
Michael Silverman confirms that Boston's training and rehab staff took a look at Garcia.

I want Garcia on the Reds. I watched him struggle a bit with the Sox his last year, and he was hurt last year, but I dont think hes done. I think hes a workhorse who could be a stud next year.
2 year deal-
First year 2 million base salary.
Every 10 starts is another 1.5 million. Do a bit by Ks, and if he makes 20 starts, the option is for 9 million, and if not then 5 million.
Something creatively crazy

He's as goodas they come when he's healthy. I could see any contending team making a serious push for him once his arm is glued back on.

I agree..the reds need to push like mad for garcia..he's hurt, but come the all-star break he should be ready to roll.
Garcia's record shows he is proven and that he is a workhorse. If the reds make a low base salary and load his contract with incentives like GmblngPtchr20 wrote it would be a win-win and that might be enough to push the reds over the top

It would be interesting if the Red Sox sign Garcia on the heels of a Bartolo Colon deal. Makes you wonder how confindent they are in how much they can get out of Lester and Buchholz and whether they think Schilling will pitch this year. Do they think they can get some innings out of Colon at the start of the season, then bring Garcia up around June when he should be healthy? Not sure, but it makes me wonder about the Yanks, who have a very similar problem with Hughes and Kennedy in the rotation and little more than Kei Igawa as backup. Why not get one of these guys or another free agent veteran starter on a minor league deal?

Scooter, you have a point. But I think it's more of logic. Buchholz will be limited to 175 innings (maybe 200 if they make the playoffs) and Lester likely will be limited to 200 innings. Schilling is a major question mark. Garcia would be as well and I'm betting he won't be at full form until next year, but he's give at least an average pitcher for the Sox for a playoff push.

Purple, I agree that it makes sense for the Sox to make these moves, and I doubt that Buchholz will even get to 175 total, considering he only threw 125 last year and the Red Sox are pretty strict on the +30ip rule. Along those lines, Lester only threw 90 last year, although he did throw 148 in '05 before the cancer, so maybe they push him towards 200. What I'm really surprised about is that the Yankees are leaving that area so unprotected. True they got a lot of starts from rookies last year, but it wasn't a lot of quality.
