Market For Crede Dries Up

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times says the market for Joe Crede has "dried up," as the Dodgers and Giants have little interest.  Tough luck for Josh Fields, who seems headed back to Triple A.  Ozzie Guillen's explanation for the lack of Crede interest:

This game has gotten to be a bunch of political, a bunch of [expletive] budget, a bunch of [expletive].  They forgot about the talent.

I'm not sure what Ozzie means by that.  Perhaps the "political" comment has something to do with Scott Boras, who represents Crede.  SI.com's Jon Heyman offers an alternative explanation, quoting a scout who says Crede still looks hurt.

Figures. Hopefully he will be fine. Not amazing, but career average would be fine by me, despite the fact it sucks.

Maybe if he sucks enough they will bench him. Or maybe he will do good enough to get traded. I love Crede and all, but the time for Fields has come.

As I've said on this site before, I don't know why anyone would want Crede, really. He's an excellent defensive third baseman, yes, and he has good power. But he has a terrible OBP, completely unacceptable. So, he is really just a place holder, at best, like Pedro Feliz. And his injury history makes him a poor (and expensive) place holder. A contender can't count on him, and a non contender shouldn't waste its time.

More evidence that Sabes may have grown a pair along with a brain?

This is good news for the Giants. No need to trade for one year of an injury-prone clone (I know that's hyberbole, but it's mostly true) of a 3B they didn't re-sign.

I wonder if Ozzie truely believes what he spouts out, or if he just likes being obnoxious.

Ozzie = Awesome. Telling it like it is because that's indeed the way it is. No BS. He does need to learn English though.

I can't wait to watch Crede prove everyone wrong.

Unless the doctors fail at surgery, he isn't injury prone. 2 YEARS ago he was told he could get surgery to fix his back, or they could just try and play through it with cortizone and rehab. He picked the latter. It worked for awhile, but it ultimately overtook him. Now his back is fixed.

I wouldn't consider dealing with 1 injury the wrong way for too long injury prone, I would just call it following bad advice.

Nomar Garciaparra, Ben Sheets, Roy Halladay, Carl Pavano. Those guys are injury prone.

If Crede is so talented, then shouldn't Ozzie be happy and want to keep him on his team?

No, because Fields is more talented. But Fields still has options, so it will be used until Crede is gone. If he is not traded, he will be gone at the end of the year. The only way Fields doesn't end up the starting 3B next year is if they some how re-sign Crede, and then trade him. that would be a terrible move though and the White Sox know it.

Sorry, my last comment was confusing with so many pronouns. Re-worded below:

"Now his back is fixed."

That's a pretty bold statement to make considering it's still spring training, and the scouts themselves are saying Crede looks hurt.

It seems to me that White Sox fans are being overly optimistic about BACK SURGERY. Backs are nearly impossible to fix. Tell me of one major success case of a player with serious back problems that magically had them fixed and was healthy the rest of his career. I don't think there are any.

Once you have back problems, it'll be chronic. The back is not like an elbow or a knee. Surgery doesn't cure it.

If Crede has so much talent, as Guillen is claiming, shouldn't he be telling the front office to quit trying to trade him?

"Nomar Garciaparra, Ben Sheets, Roy Halladay, Carl Pavano. Those guys are injury prone."

Roy Halladay is sooo injury prone.

It seems like every year he is getting his appendix taken out

or,

having to rehab his broken leg because he keeps trying to catch balls with his foot instead of his glove. Thats bad DNA right there

And whats the deal with him leading the league in complete games ? and pitching more then 200innings all the time.

Jeez doesn't he realize he's made of glass ?

I don't know IRS77, are you a doctor ???

As far as i can tell Guillen is, so if he says Crede is good to go, i think that should be good enough for Sabean.

In a way, the back is connected to the elbow, so if you can fix one, then fixing the other should be no problem.

There just bones and Guillen knows all about those, mostly cause he has a lot of them himself.

He's just telling it like it is.

I still insist that he's worth much less than perceived. He's much like Feliz, whom the Giants deemed expendable, and whom the Phillies signed on the cheap--a guy who gives you something, so that you're not undercutting the value of your championship players. Maybe the Dodgers could use that sort of third baseman, but throw in the injury uncertainty, and why risk it?

"In a way, the back is connected to the elbow, so if you can fix one, then fixing the other should be no problem."

That is a gross over-simplification. Back problems have little to do with the bones and more to do with the massive amount of complex muscle in the back. An elbow or knee can be fixed because those are, more often than not, problems based around tendons, which is a much less complex situation.

I am a doctor, yes.

No, not really, but that doesn't change the fact that people with back problems have chronic problems. Either it's major, like Eric Chavez, or it's a little more minor and managable, like Vlad Guerrero. We might not know for sure right away if it's going to be major or minor for Crede, but we can feel pretty comfortable in the assumption he will continue to have health issues regarding his back throughout his career.

And even if it turns out Crede's problems are minor (which I doubt-- I see Chavez written all over him) he is no Vlad Guerero, and so he's not worth much (or anything, for that matter) to a team trying to rebuild and get a solid footing.

This all seems silly to me... Crede's value has fallen a lot. The Whitesox should have struck while the iron was hot... Giants front office was there to see him launch his only HR in the Spring and could have gotten a couple of young minor league pitchers.. Now, he has NO value.

I rather like that the game has become "political" if that means Boras clients are less appealing.

Players should take note of that; Boras has a negative effect too.

It's true what folks are saying about bad backs; they are with you for life. As an old guy, I've only known one person who had back surgery with an excellent result. The others are constantly in pain or on heavy meds.

The Dodgers, who are in bad need of a third baseman, didn't offer much according to reports. Maybe it's because he's hitting like .150 this spring with one HR?

If I were the White Sox, I'd let Fields play and either 1)see what I can get for Crede and take it or 2)sit him.

If he doesn't want to negotiate (his agent is Boras, so he'll probably test free agency) then it's time to move on. The White Sox aren't going to be competitive this year or the next, so why waste their time with Crede?

I don't think I'd give up much for him if I was another club. Too risky (back surgery) and ugly stats this spring.

When the hell did Ozzie Guillen become a doctor?!
Doc Oz, LMAO He sounds like a comic book villian!

How about the fact that maybe Crede isn't as talented as Sox fans think? He is allergic to walks, and is coming off back surgery. He is good defensivley, at least he was before the surgery, but not as great as Sox fans believe.

Translation for those that don't speak Ozzie:

"I know [expletive] about management."

So basically Ozzie Guillen is whining up a storm because other clubs aren't dumb enough to meet the White Sox's exorbitant demands for Joe Crede? Boo hoo. Wasn't Kenny Williams asking for Jonathan Sanchez? Give me a break, I wouldn't trade Jonathan Sanchez, no way, no how.
