« San Diego: Pitchers' Haven | Main | No Recent Brian Roberts Talks »
The D'Backs have two fellas on our Out of Options list - pitchers Brandon Medders and Dustin Nippert. In the eyes of Nick Piecoro, there's a decent chance the D'Backs trade one of 'em.
Nippert turns 27 in May. A TJ survivor, Baseball America wrote in their '07 handbook that the tall righty has "top-of-the-rotation stuff." He could be a prize for a rebuilding team that could afford to keep him in the Majors all year. He's yet to have much big league success.
Medders has a nice 3.36 career ERA in 131 innings of relief, but his K/BB has deteriorated over the years. The 28 year-old missed most of '04 with labrum surgery, according to BA. They say he's deceptive and possesses a decent sinking fastball and cutter.
Both these guys are interesting, with Nippert the upside choice. If the D'Backs do deal one of them I'm guessing it could be for a prospect or two.

I would not deal Medders if I were the D-backs. He has his fiery attitude back this year (after his mellow approach last year was not effective) and has had an outstanding spring. That said...that does make him more attractive trade material...but, I would hold on to him and deal Nippert.

If I were the Mets, I'd look at Nippert. I know the pressing issue right now is the OF, but this is a good chance to buy low on a guy who can step in for El Duque if Pelfrey isn't ready. It would especially be a good move if the Mets traded Jorge Sosa for an outfielder (Thames?)...

The best team would be Oakland. They have a possible decent rotation with a lot of health issues.
Having Nippert in Oakland would at the very least bring consistency every fifth day.

Nippert makes sense for a team like St. Louis, Oakland, Florida, or Kansas City. He also could be a good fit for the Giants but he's not going to be given away within the division.

...the Nationals too.

I know this is totally out of the realm of possibilities.. but It would be nice to see him in Cinci of Cleveland, before he went to WVU... He went to Ohio Valley College hristian College. Which is actually the smallest D2 school in the nation. It is right along the Ohio River, anyway it would just be nice to see him back home, but I doubt either team makes a move at him.

I wouldn't touch any pitcher that has suffered a torn labrum, fixed or not. Medders' numbers have steadily declined since he came onto the scene in 2005. Labrum injuries are more likely than not career ending injuries and the pitcher is never quite able to maintain his previous level of performance. Medders is no different. As for Nippert, his MiL and ML numbers aren't that impressive. Doesn't look noteworthy to me. It's no wonder the D'Backs would want to deal them. All things considered, if I was Arizona, I'd deal Medders and his labrum away as fast as possible.
