« 2008 MVP Predictions | Main | Indians Inquire On Freddy Garcia »
Baseball America's Ben Badler has the latest on 16 year-old Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo. He says MLB is currently investigating Salcedo's birthdate (not an uncommon practice). Scott Boras and Co. represent the kid, but they're not talking. There were rumors he'd signed with the Tribe, but the Indians said two weeks ago that it wasn't true. Badler adds that Salcedo rejected a $2.5MM offer from the Giants and the D'Backs may be interested. Badler also writes:
Adding to the intrigue is Major League Baseball's recent firing of three investigators in the Dominican, including one who was working on Salcedo's case.
MLB's Latin operations manager says the firings are unrelated to the Salcedo case.

What a mess for a kid who’s age would put him at like a Soph/Jr in HS, with probably much less than a 50% shot to make the majors somewhere around the year 2013 or so…

How much older do they think this kid is?! If it's not too significant- i.e., if he's still young enough to expect significant physical growth- then I hope the O's get involved (though there's absolutely no talk of that). McPhail is talking all this noise about making inroads in the international market...this would be a splash. Kid's supposed to be crazy good right? Maybe with all this controversy, you sign him at a discount. Maybe you're lucky and he IS 16. Maybe he's 17 or 18, but still has crazy talent and a huge upside. And maybe he busts, but at least we've made noise in the market and announced ourselves as a presence that's willing to pay that DINERO.

I wish the Jays would make more of these types of signings. Balbino Fuenmayor is the only really young Latin player they've recently signed.

This kid is probably gonna end up being as screwed up socially as A-Rod. That guys had so much stuff just handed to him over the years that he just doesn't quite seem to get it.

Man I really hope that everything goes well for Salcedo. I met him when I was 12 yrs old, 2 and half years ago when I went over there during my summer break. The dude is a really decent person, he is really cool and well educated kid. I know him because I played in the same team as him. Well anyways the whole point is the kid is amazing I only saw him play once at the time he was 15 but he is incredible i can only which to have as much talent as he does. I saw him take 3 at bats and he was hitting the ball like I've never seen before, has alot of power and got on base at all of his at bats and with the glove he is just as equally good I saw him make a fine diving play at third and catching the runner out by a mile he has an electrifying arm and incredible range and yes he was playing third and not short for what reasons im not really sure and his speed on the bases makes him a complete 5 tool prospect. Physically he is also incredible at the time he had to be 6'2-6'3 and around 185-195lbs and let me remember you that he was only 15 at the time. Now about his age concerns I was told that his mom claimed him 2 months after he was borned making him 2 months older then his birth certificate stated I dont know how true this is but that is what I heard from family members and his own coach. Now I know most of you won't take me serius and just figure "oh here is a kid with no life who had to find something to do and besides how much can a 15 yr old really know about baseball" well i do have a life and I wouldnt right all of this if i was making it up and I probably no more about baseball then most of you know it alls out there so i think i can evaluate him as a player as i just did. And scribbletone dont talk about someone you dont know socially he is fine and is handling the pressure of all of this well. However I do agree with darkstone about this being too much for a kid his age. And if any of ya think he is not all that take a look at this video on youtube of him making a couple of swings.

also take a look at this one notice how the pitcher made him look like a fool on the curve that he swung and miss but thenlook at his comeback dint even look like he put that good of a swing on the ball but he did and hit it out of the park through the power alleys in right field
