1:24pm: This thing is resolved; the Boston Globe has some details.
8:43: Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald writes that Red Sox players may boycott the team trip to Japan if the coaches aren't paid the $40K they expected. I think it's highly likely this gets sorted out and the Sox make their flight.
As it stands the season will open on March 25th (less than a week!) with Daisuke Matsuzaka facing Joe Blanton in Japan.

This is a curious article. Red Sox coaches want a $40K bonus to accompany the team to Japan ???
Why should they get any bonus whatsoever ?? It's a road trip and that is part of baseball.
My gosh, if my coaching staff wanted tens of thousands of dollars to go to Japan I'd do to them what Ronald Reagan did to striking air traffic controllers

good for them, this is shows how little mlb players want to make this trip. I hope they don't go and forfeit, it will definetly help them in the long run, screw japan let them watch their own baseball.

Jim T, I don't think its about the money as much as MLB said they would get a certain amount and are trying to back out of it and thats sparking the outcry. They are doing it based on principle.

I'm curious why they picked the A's to go to Japan for this series? The Sox make sense with their Japanese players, I would have thought the M's would have been a good choice or even the Yankees. It isn't a big deal just surprised me.

A luxury airliner playing first-run movies, pretty stewardesses at your beck and call asking you if you want another beer...Chauffers waiting at the airport in Japan, a luxurious buffet at the hotel, a dozen pretty Japanese girls hanging around the lobby wanting to prove that their slider is better than Fukumori's
It sounds like an episode of lifestyles of the rich and famous hosted by Robin Leach rather than some arduous task that deserves a bonus...
I'd pay for that vacation ! What a bunch of Divas, both the players and coaches

Christ, it doesn't matter how awesome the trip is. MLB said that the staff and players would both receive $40K as an incentive for making this trip nobody wanted to do and now the staff is not getting it only the players are getting that $40K.

To Jim T:
Have you ever traveled to Japan and back? It's a grueling ordeal on the senses, I went there for my senior trip when I was in high school. Jet lag is serious stuff, especially when the Red Sox are going out of their way, halfway across the globe for an exhibition game.
You go take a trip to Japan, play a little baseball, then come back and tell me you feel fine when you land back on American soil. Not to mention they have to go and start a new season of baseball afterwards.

Some people will stop at nothing, and use any oppurtunity no matter how rediculous to bash the Red Sox. When the players agreed to go they were told everybody on the team (staff included) would receive $40k bonuses. MLB backed out on that agreement, so the Sox decided to hold them to their word. Not everybody associated with the team are millionaires. There are people on that staff making in the $35k range. Stop being a bunch of whiny little babies.
