« Roberts-Cubs Deal Off The Table | Main | Phils Talking To Giants, Reds About Helms? »
The Rockies have released veteran Marcus Giles; they're going with Jayson Nix at second base to open the season. Giles had a good spring, hitting .321/.457/.536 in 28 ABs. The Dodgers are one team with possible mild interest.
Giles is not yet 30 but he's scramlbing for work these days. Back in '05 he posted an .826 OPS; what happened?

What happened? The juice bar closed up shop, that's what happened.

Furcal and Giles were going to be the future for the Braves... not to bash him or anything, but could he possibly have been one of those players that have been on steroids for a period of time and now has been forced off of it?

Every year this guy's OPS has dropped significantly since '05.

Ok steroids, but he still put up a pretty good line in spring training. What were the Rockies looking for when they brought him in? Maybe they just wanted Nix to have to compete for his spot.

He might have simply asked to be released so that he might catch on somewhere else. It's not as if they could trade him.

Could the Orioles nab him (along with Alex Cintron) to fill some glaring holes? Yes, I know that the Orioles STILL have Roberts... but Freddie Bynum can't be better than Giles, can he?

I don't think he was a steroid user, seems to me that he was just never the same after his second concusion

The worst case scenario is that the Giants overpay for his services and regret it for a couple of years.

Could Pittsburgh take a chance with Giles? It looks like Freddy Sanchez could miss a few games this season with that shoulder injury.

“I don't think he was a steroid user, seems to me that he was just never the same after his second concusion”
Actually, Giles just seems unable to hit away from Atlanta for some weird reason. Check this beyond-bizarre career pattern out:
06 in Atl ~ .284/.344/.420/.764
06 Away ~ .232/.338/.343/.681
05 in Atl ~ .310/.380/.547/.927
05 Away ~ .272/.350/.376/.726
04 in Atl ~ .318/.382/.494/.876
04 Away ~ .305/.375/.399/.774
…Outside that BA increase in 04, well you can see why it should come as little surprise that he hit so poorly last year in hitter-hell SD. I had looked that up about midseason and was blown away ~ never seen a guy so dependant on a rather neutral park before… :/

He was 2-17 in Atlanta last season, not that it matters much.

He just caught the Carlos Baerga bug.

Did Brian get the same concussion too? Both these guys have had pretty suspicious careers to me.

Yep, I know for a fact from a source that both Giles were on roids. Blalock, both Hairstons, and Gabe Kapler as well for guys that haven't been suspended/accused yet.
And this same source has already called 3 players that have not only been accused, but been suspended for steroids/HGH.

djskilbr, does this surce hapen to be Canseco's next book "Here are more people I'll accuse for attention and money"
Giles is a flameout, no mystery, no story. It just happens, not everyone who's got talent as a rookie will have a good 20 year career.

"Ok steroids, but he still put up a pretty good line in spring training. What were the Rockies looking for when they brought him in? Maybe they just wanted Nix to have to compete for his spot."
They obviously brought him in to play if Nix didn't look ready in Spring Training to start at 2B everyday.
Nix did well, so Giles became expendable. If Nix didn't do well, then they would have kept him.

Since the Cubs have apparently missed out on Brian Roberts, might they take a flyer on Giles?
Posted by: Sweet Lou | March 27, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Yeah.
Why don't the Cubs have a go at him?
