« Pirates Rumors: Nady, Capps | Main | Recommended: RotoWorld Draft Guide »
In the 2006-07 offseason, Wes Helms had just finished his best year (in terms of rate stats, at least). He hit .329/.390/.575 for the '06 Marlins, facing a disproportionate number of lefties.
David Bell and Abraham Nunez had combined for an OPS under .700 at the hot corner for the '06 Phillies, so they figured Helms would be an upgrade even stretched as a full-timer. They gave him a two-year, $5.45MM deal with a $3.75MM club option for '09. Part of the motivation was to save money for an Alfonso Soriano bid. Plus, Mark DeRosa had already signed with the Cubs.
The signing did not go as planned, as Helms hit just .246/.297/.368 and lost full-time status quickly. The Phils gave third base time to Nunez and Greg Dobbs, once again generating subpar results. They signed Pedro Feliz to a two-year deal this winter.
The Phils would like to trade Helms now, and David Murphy suggests swapping him with Steve Kline could make sense. The Giants aren't interested though. Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto says the Phils indeed desire a southpaw reliever for Helms, who is drawing interest from the Braves and Marlins (both clubs he's played for previously).

If the Braves have a surplus of anything, it's utility IF on the bench. Why add another one at the expense of a lefty from the pen, which they do NOT have a surplus of?

Mets could use a RH bat that can hit lefties and play 1B/OF, and have been looking to trade Scott Schowenweis, a LH reliever.
Phils want a LH reliever and have been looking to trade Wes Helms, a RH bat that can hit lefties and play 1B/OF
And yet, since it's the Mets and the Phillies, I don't see it happening.

i wouldn't categorize dobbs as "disastrous" - he was slightly below-average in pretty much every area for essentially the league minimum salary while filling several positions in a pinch (mostly 3B). nooner was a bit more of a disaster, at .234/.318/.282, all while making a lot more coin than dobbs.
dobbs/feliz isn't necessarily the answer at 3B for the phillies, so i think selling low on helms might not be a great idea.

The Marlin's aren't interested in Helms anymore. That was quite awhile ago, not long after the Cabrera trade. Now they have three options at third base and Luis Gonzalez to take over the "Veteran" role.

One would have to think a Dobbs/Helms platoon at 3rd would outhit Pedro Feliz and his career .288 OBP.
But I guess when you're getting rediculous production from your shortstop and 2nd baseman, then you can sacrafice some offense at 3b for stellar D (If Feliz's D is actually stellar).
My pick for a Wes Helms acquisition....Minnesota Twins. He could help out Mike Lamb against lefties...though Lamb has hit lefties in the past. I dunno, that's just my pick...of the top of my head.
Happy Post St. Patty's Hangover Day to all.

It's looking like Brendan Harris is going to be that guy for the Twins.

Umm yea, the i can see the braves interest having been there in the past, but i just cannot see where helms would be a good option on the team. If the braves have been rumored to be on the trail of the likes of juan rivera, it seems to make little sense that we would settle for wes helms.

Maybe so about the Marlins and Braves having past interest, but Perrotto wrote that article on Sunday.

I thought the Pirates might get in on Helms awhile back for Marte... I can't imagine the Marlins parting with Tankersley straight up for Helms; likewise the Braves with McBride... The Marlins and Braves aren't just going to help the Phillies with their pitching problems in my opinion so if a trade were to happen it would probably be for a low level prospect and some salary relief for the Phillies...

First off....
allaboutthephils... Mckay Mcbride was traded last May/June to the detroit tigers for Will Ledezma (who was later traded to the Pads for Royce Ring, our current lefty)
Secondly....
Tim, my apologies if my words seemed to doubt the legitmacy of you or your sources. My intent was not to say the braves are not expressing interest, my intent was to say that the braves reason to be interested in helms was much bigger in the past than it needs to be now.

The Reds don't need Helms but could be considered for a three team swap. They have Affeldt, Staton, Bray, Coutlangus, and Mercker that could be help to the Phils. Not much needed in return I wouldn't think for any of those besides Affeldt and Bray.

Nny, Feliz is outstanding at third! He's probably the most underrated defensive 3B in the game. Now his offensive (or the lack of offense I should say) is another story. Although in the run-fest that is Citizens Bank Park you could see Feliz hit 25 big ones. That's not bad when you consider where he's hitting in the lineup.

Just because someone writes the Marlins are interested (as in currently interested) in Wes Helms doesn't make it so and with Jose Castillo playing a terrific third and Jorge Cantu hitting .450+ this spring, there isn't anyone on the anticipated 25 man roster you would exchange for Wes Helms, especially as some people keep writing the Phillies expect a "quality" left-handed reliever in return. There are currently four players on the roster who can play third and four who could play left field.
Sorry this is old, old news and perpetuating it is folly regardless of when someone regurgitates it.
