Odds And Ends: Crisp, Spiezio, Lahey, Longoria

Here are a few notes from the MLBiverse...

  • Terry Francona sounds like a manager that is frustrated and wishes the Red Sox would go ahead and trade Coco Crisp. After starting Crisp for the second straight game, Francona said "The more [Jacoby Ellsbury] plays, the better he's going to be, and I clearly feel that responsibility...I'm trying to balance [playing time] the best I can."
  • It only took a couple of weeks, but Scott Spiezio managed to mess up his latest opportunity with the Atlanta Braves. After failing to show to his AAA Richmond game "ready to play", Spiezio was released by the Braves.
  • Rule 5 pick Tim Lahey, who was DFA'd by the Phillies, cleared waivers and has been sent back to the Twins for $25K.
  • With Evan Longoria now in the majors, the Rays may be forced to trade Jonny Gomes or Eric Hinske (who is off to a hot start) in the next few weeks.

Anyone know the story on Spiezio? How was he unfit to play?

Maybe he had a few cocktails the night before.

I think the general consensus would be that Spiezio showed up to the stadium either drunk or hungover.

I'd guess the Rays get rid of Gomes since Hinske hits lefty and is more versatile.

That Rays DL list is growing rather large with some of their key players on it.

Glad to see Longoria up. Anyone else excited to see if Big Niemann can put it together tomorrow?

Spiezio would have been fine if he had an Al Reyes-like story to tell of a Birthday party gone wrong (e.g. spitting blood, tazer, etc.). Or if he had been posting Ruth-esque numbers lately, he might have won a get out of jail free card. Or an Albert Belle-escent sob story about having screwed up during his recovery program. But he's just Scott Spiezio, so he'll get the drunk and ant-semetic Mel Gibson treatment: exile.

I'll be tuning in to see what Niemann can do, for sure. Should be an interesting game.

One thing about getting rid of Hinske or Gomes. Why not keep those guys and just DFA Haynes or demote Ruggiano?

Scott Spiezio:
MLB===>AAA===>AA
Next stop, Betty Ford.
