« Wilkerson, Norton Designated | Main | Rockies Acquire Jason Grilli, Jorge de la Rosa »
On April 9th, Jack Macgruder of the East Valley Tribune said that D'Backs second baseman Orlando Hudson seeks $15MM per year for his next contract. That would suggest he is in Chase Utley's class.
MLB.com's Barry Bloom inquired with Hudson on this topic today but didn't get much out of him. Hudson did tell Bloom that Macgruder's report was false, though. Hudson also made a point to say that he'd love to stay in Arizona.

Hudson has turned into a decent player at the plate to go along with his great D since he left the Jays, but he needs to put up at least one .300 BA and a 25+HR season before he merits anything close to what Utley is making.

Hudson is an absolute witch defensively, but offensively he is not in the same park as Utley. And the D-backs would not dream of paying out anything in the area code of $15 mil...my guess is he will stay in Zona, but more in the neighborhood of Eric Byrnes money, i.e. 3-year $30 mil.

I'm not sure of the remaining Dbacks farm, but do they have a back up plan for 2B other than Burke? Why don't they let Hudson walk and compete for Ellis for a minor step down offensively and defensively but a big save money-wise.

I am not sure why you think that for some reason Ellis is going to come over at a cheap discount. He might be cheaper, but really just barely. If Ellis is a step down defensively from Hudson, it is only because Hudson is a wizard, because Ellis is superb. They actually have pretty similar offensive numbers over their career, with the O-Dog being a better contact hitter, but my feeling is if you slide Ellis into Hudson's spot in that lineup, Ellis could also tear it up in Arizona. Hudson might get paid more, but I dont think they will save big money at all. Maybe 1 or 2 million a year, maybe.

I think Hudsons fate is pinned to how well Burke plays this year. The club would rather not pay Hudson, it seems. He should take 10 mil a year and stay in AZ.
