Rosenthal's Latest: Roberts, Jones

Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com has his latest video "Rosenthal's Full Count" up and running.

  • First, Rosenthal calls Andruw Jones the "early candidate for worst free agent signing" noting that Jones is now batting 7th. Rosenthal goes so far as to say that the Dodgers' best outfield right now includes Juan Pierre and does not include Jones...The Dodgers are truly lucky to have Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp on the cheap right now ($840K combined), because Jones ($14.1M) and Pierre ($8M) are a lot of dead contract weight for one outfield.
  • And we can thank Rosenthal for keeping Brian Roberts in our lives...Rosenthal notes that as the O's start coming back to earth after their hot start, they can start thinking once again about their July fire sale. The big name is obviously Roberts and Rosenthal says that the Cubs still want the second baseman. He says the Rockies are also likely to be interested. However, the Indians, who tried to put a package together for Roberts this past off-season, will not be one of the bidders as it would require position shuffling, something not likely to occur in-season...Then again, Peter Angelos may just keep dangling Roberts into next off-season. Once Roberts is traded, Angelos may be worried that there won't be much reason to talk about the O's. You guys would miss all the Roberts rumors, wouldn't you?

Andruw is swinging at everything, and his bat-speed just isn't there. One problem I've noticed since opening day is that Jones hasn't batted higher than 5th. Maybe he needs to bat 4th for protection. He may see some fatter pitches. Jones did draw two walks last night, so maybe he is seeing the ball a bit better. Still, he is making too much money to draw walks.

Could it be that Andruw is simply done. Some players age with a slow degradation of skill and some simply fall off the cliff.

I wouldn't love that as I'm an Orioles fans. We do exist. It is hard, however, ignoring the smart ass comments by blog posters and ESPN.

calm down. he is just referring to all the grief that some people on this site give them for writing so much about Roberts. He is the only big name rumored to be going anywhere for a while now and your idiotic, worst-in-baseball owner keeps dragging this sh!t out.

and seriously. once Roberts gets traded (and we can all move on) there will be NO REASON to talk about the O's outside of Baltimore

Keep up the great work Tim & Co

James Lindsey you don't need to be disrespectful to O's fans last time I checked the count read
Orioles = 3 World Series Titles

Cubs = Zero

Thanks for playing the game

who said I was a Cubs fan? Far from it. And besides. The Cubbies do have 2 world series titles. thanks for knowing your baseball history.

and O's fans don't need to be disrespectful of this site just because their owner is an idiot.

and since you are not up on your baseball history, let me set you straight.

last 10 years.
Baltimore: 0 winning seasons. 0 playoff appearances
Cubs: 5 winning seasons, 3 playoff appearances.

thanks for playing.

Hey KidOriole,

Perhaps you should look at the facts before you make comments. You have just embarrassed yourself. The Cubs have two World Series Titles (1907 and 1908). They just haven't had one since then.

I can't wait for Roberts to get traded SOMEWHERE BESIDES the Cubs so I don't have to read about Andy McPhail anymore.

How about you all lay off the Orioles. Considering all the grief we already get from the media there's no reason to kick a once-proud franchise just because it's down.

And yes, as an Orioles fan, I see no reason I would be 'happy to not hear about the Orioles' anymore on here. Losing teams have fans too, you know.

"Once Roberts is traded, there isn't much reason to talk about the O's. You guys would love that, wouldn't you?"

Actually, I'd prefer to never hear about the Cubs again. Both franchises are disasters, but I guess Chicago at least tries to buy their way to a better team. I'm sure you guys will roast me, but who really cares?

Steve Bartman for president!!

"and O's fans don't need to be disrespectful of this site just because their owner is an idiot."

We're not being disrespectful to this site. I've been a visitor to this site for years. We were, however, pointing out that we didn't like that comment. Given that this site is a business, I would expect a little more than that, especially from someone that follows the Rays.

I could have sworn this site was for baseball fans. I thought baseball fans would enjoy baseball news, regardless of the team. Here's an idea, though, for the people that don't like reading Roberts and/or Orioles' news: Don't read it. Yes, that's right. It's really that simple. Don't read the article.

"thanks for playing."

Oh, that's right. The goal of a season is to play above 500. Once you do that, you're done. The Cubs have achieved a lot in the past 10 years then.

i reworded the last statement to be more clear. I was just joking about all the Brian Roberts posts on this site in the past couple of months. I once joked on here that Tim would need to rename this site "BrianRobertsTradeRumors.com". Never meant to imply that we would ignore the O's. Just that some people may be happy when we no longer have to write about Roberts.

Are you joking? You think supporting a winning team makes you a better person? The test of a fan is whether or not they stick it out through the tough stretches. It's not really hard to enjoy a championship.

Thanks Cork.

Well its true the Cubs who have not won a W.S in 100 years. And the O's should lose 100. But as it looks right now (before todays game) I still see the O's in 1st place in the AL East. While the Cubs sit 3rd in the NL Central.

It won't be that way for the Orioles for too long. But its still fun to see.

But most importantly. Before todays game:
B.Roberts .300 .404 .500 0.904

I really hope he goes to Colorado. But it looks to me like the Cubs really needed the help at leadoff.

And I do not see how the owner is the problem with the Roberts deal. I think the Cubs just did not give up what the O's wanted. And I see Marquis is still sucking.

Jim Edmonds to San Diego is far worse than Los Angeles picking up Andruw Jones.

"Are you joking? You think supporting a winning team makes you a better person? The test of a fan is whether or not they stick it out through the tough stretches. It's not really hard to enjoy a championship."

Your exactly right, but you missed my point.
If you act like you or your team are losers, that's precisely what you'll end up as.
Many fans and a lot of the players have given up on the O's for several years now. Should it be any surprise that they haven't competed for several years? The front office has not done anything to change the organizational mentality, so the results have not changed either. They have a chance to turn the attitude around by having a fire sale, but the mindset needs to change at the top first.

I'm just tired of McPhail raping Hendry (ie Trachsel for Moore an Cherry). He seriously de-valued the move by bringing Trachsel back, though.

"Jim Edmonds to San Diego is far worse than Los Angeles picking up Andruw Jones."

I'd have to disagree with this. In Edmonds, you know what to expect...a quality outfielder with good pop but diminishing skills who will spend about 4-6 weeks sidelined over the course of the season. I don't think anyone expects much more than that.
On the other hand, the Dodgers were fooling themselves thinking that Jones would return to the elite level. Obviously he has little personal drive to get his fat butt into shape, even with the prospect of a huge free agent contract dangling as motivation. The silver lining for LA is they've only got him for one year, then the Yankees or Red Sox can overpay him for underproducing. Atlanta was lucky to get rid of him before it was too late

I thought McPhail and Angelos were preoccupied raping the fans.

Hogwash. I wouldn't be a fan if I didn't think the O's were the best team. I can also be objective and say that they are currently not a good team. Also, how exactly does my attitude affect the performance of the team in any way? :P

One of my favorite posts ever.

Who's better ... the Cubbies or the O's?

In one corner you have a team that hasn't won a world series in 100 years.

In the other corner you have a team that hasn't had a winning season in 10 years.

Wow - talk about Clash of the Titans.

How about both teams stop talking trash. Frankly neither organization has much to be proud of. When your best line is "At least we won a world series 100 years ago" it's downright depressing.

James Lindsey you are a fricken moron.

This comment section got me thinking. What is the difference between winning and being a championship team?

These are both storied clubs, first and foremost, to take anything away from either would be removing a large part of baseball history from the game. Nothing we say here will make a difference on what they do on the field, or what the choose to do with each respective organization. Winning teams only have to win 82 games, (to be over .500) and a championship team has to win in the pressure of the postseason. In reality what is the difference, nothing but the time of the game, sure there is pressure and life on the life mentally that comes along with the postseason, but its still the same game, and you have to keep that in mind.

Honestly I think that it is overlooked that the O's play in one of the most dominated divisions in baseball, having both Red Sox and Yankees inside their division. They say that money doesn't buy rings in baseball, but it does buy you talent to try and get those rings.

The Cubs should be winning right now, they have all of the piece in place to do so, and the O's don't. In addition they have the highest payroll in their division (i believe) with many of their key players in their prime.

In all I believe this is a dumb argument about which is the better organization, simply cause of the current trends, look into the history baseball would not be what is now without either of these clubs, no matter what you believe, they have both made their marks on the game.

Alright that was a lot, but like i said it got me thinking, and the answer is simply winning is nice, but it means nothing if you can't figure out how to finish, it would be like going to school for 4 years and never being able to get the degree cause you could simply pass one class that you needed, you could ace the rest but that last one would get you over the hump. You could say yea i did really well in everything else, but an employer still would be looking for that degree.

Airman

You use waaaay too many commas and not enough periods.

and...

Agreed, James Lindsay is an idiot.

And that is why i failed Senior Writing the first time. The last class i needed to earn my degree.

That was funny as s*%*, Airman. Thanks (work sucks).

Anyway, gotta agree with whoever make the 'Clash of the Titans reference.'

'The Cubs have two World Series Titles (1907 and 1908). They just haven't had one since then.'

Most unintentionally funny thing ever said on this site! You do get that, in defending the Cubs, you made EVERYONE'S point as to what a horribly cursed franchise they are, don't you? Not that most O's fans here can really bask in the glory of the once proud Oriole Way. Hell, we haven't made the playoffs since that little s*#@, Jeffrey Mayer (or however you spell it) cost us the pennant (I'll believe we would've won it 'til I die)- yes we have our own Bartman; the difference was that it wasn't Game 7 and he was a 12 year old fan for the other team, so he was a hero (for the Yanks) instead of a goat. Furthermore, our last WS title was over 25 years ago.

Point being- both clubs suck. 'nuff said. And O's fans getting worked up about the initial comment need to loosen up! Fact is, Roberts has dominated this site for months and there really ISN'T much else to say about the team. Markakis and Jones make up two-thirds of an exciting young OF (and Scott isn't exactly ancient...and has been RAKING). Some of the young pitchers are worth watching, too, but really...most of the action will be taking place in Frederick and Bowie and Norfolk (oh my!). This is a team with a past and a future (hopefully). The present is really just a matter of killing time!

Oh, and that sounded worse that I meant it to sound. As an O's fanatic, I'm pumped about their start and hope they pull some miracle and win the AL East. But I'm also realistic. I'll be rooting my heart out; it's just that I think if we're ever going to compete again- in the AL BEast- we can't just pray for all the pieces to fall into place or hope good chemistry gets it done. We've gotta develop young talent, spend like the big boys (when the time is right), and build up the team's infrastructure. Then- and only then- will we stand with the Yanks and Sox as a perennial contender. The good news is that we have the money (esp. with the MASN loot rolling in). The bad news is that we also have Angelos. ...And while I think the Cubs fans go overboard because he's been difficult to deal with in terms of making a move that, ultimately, would make them better...and find them biased against McPhail- who, in my opinion, has done a helluva job and seems to have free reign over personnel decisions (the first time that can be said of a GM under Angelos)...he is a d-bag. Any O's fan who says otherwise or defends him is just being defensive (which is understandable on this site, but...) or lying to themselves. Angelos is a tool. Period.

If - and it's a big if because it's early - Andruw Jones turns out to be a bust, Colletti should be fired. Three terrible free agent signings - Schmidt hasn't pitched, Pierre is unwatchable, and now Jones for $18mil - are going to hamstring the team financially and block the young guys that should be playing every day.

Work for me isn't too bad. I mean come on i get paid to fly packages. They don't tend to complain much.

But in all truthfulness i think its something to keep in mind that we are simply spectators here not in the position to make the calls. And bickering which team is better when neither has been great recently is like trying to figure out the type of car makes you more cool, it was good in high school, but now who the **** cares.

On the Jones/Colletti/Dodgers thing.

The one positive with Andruw is that he has drawn some walks and is among the top in the league in pitches seen. Watching him here in L.A. every day, it seems like he swings at the garbage pitches and looks at some borderline ones that he could probably nail for hits. I don't think he is done completely, but I do think he needs to be hitting higher in the order to see some better pitches.

As for the Pierre signing, I don't think there is any doubt that Colletti freaked out about the J.D. Drew thing and overpaid, but it is not as if Pierre didn't deliver as advertised. 196 hits, 64 SB and the best strikeout/at bat in the game. He would be much more easy to take if he cost 7-8 million a year. The truly bad signing last year was Gonzo, who cost nearly 8 million a year and blocked both Kemp and Ethier at the same time.

The unfortunate thing here is that it seems Rafael Furcal is going to be the one the Dodgers end up letting go, despite his great play now that he is healthy again. With Jones under contract through next year, I guess the Dodgers will go to Hu, who will probably never be the offensive player Furcal is.

KidOriole,
Your an Idiot...Cubs have been to the W.S. 10 times and have won it 2 times...the only other national league teams to go to the W.S. more is the St. Louis Cardinals(17) and the New York Giants(14)...you can cry and say that it was soooo long ago but the facts are facts!

Um, jtcubbies, you seem to have missed the Dodgers and their 21 NL Pennants

"James Lindsey you don't need to be disrespectful to O's fans last time I checked the count read
Orioles = 3 World Series Titles

Cubs = Zero

Thanks for playing the game"

What!?!?! wow, someone needs to learn some history. The Cubs have won 2 world series, and were the first team to go back-to-back. They also won the first ever NL Pennant (which was well before the AL even existed, and no other league was operating then.)

So technically the Cubs have won the World Series twice, but was the best in baseball 3 times.

Please try to be inteligent.

Also:

FOR THE RECORD THE CUBS WON THEIR LAST WORLD SERIES 99 YEARS AGO, NOT 100.

It will be 100 in October, if the Cubs do not win this year.
