« Jorge Sosa Officially Released | Main | Cleveland GM Shapiro Ready To Talk Trades »
It's a DFA kind of day, I suppose. To make room for the much-anticipated call-up of 20-year old lefty Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers designated Esteban Loaiza for assignment today. The team now has ten days to either trade him or release him unless Loaiza accepts a demotion to AAA Las Vegas.
In his final year of a three-year deal worth over $21MM, Loaiza is guaranteed at least $7MM in 2008, plus has a $375K buyout on a 2009 option. Picked up by the Dodgers after he was waived by Oakland back in August, Loaiza's struggles in the Bay Area followed him down to LA, where he compiled a 6.94 ERA in twelve appearances. The 36-year old righty has been on the DL since early May due to a shoulder problem.

Did we MLBTR writers have a contest going for who would get to write this post? If so, you win Paul. If not, we should have!

Succeed or Secede
If Loaiza is released, he will basically be in the same position Frank Thomas was in just a month or so ago. This time, however, I don't think he'll be returning to the A's.
If Loaiza is released, like Thomas, he will have his pick of the teams in Major League Baseball, either as a starter or a reliever.
Since Money will not matter, he will be able to choose whichever team he wants, though it will likely come down to those teams that need a Starter. He could do what Thomas did and go back to where he once had success, and end up with the Nationals again.

Isn't it likely that the Phillies and Astros would be interested in Loiza? I wonder if either have anything to offer for Loiza, not that it would take much, or if they'd just wait for him to be released. Detroit might also be a possibility if they think he could do better than what they have already. They really need to get some production from their rotation and at the least Loiza would give them another option.

Loaiza will go to the Padres, book it.

Ok seriously, what the F* are the Dodgers doing? I mean, this Loariza DFA / Kersh call-up is obviously the right thing to do, but I’m beyond pissed about their other move:
“The Dodgers moved Nomar Garciaparra to the 60-day DL Saturday”
…which is no problem…
“The Dodgers purchased the contract of 3B Terry Tiffee from Triple-A Las Vegas”
…Huh? Are you kidding me? The 29-YO AAA filler they signed off the minor-league scrapheap is getting called up? What the heck is the teams problem where they wont call up LaRoche? I mean, sure he’s only hitting .238 in his 23 AAA games ~ but he’s got 28 Walks (!) with 4 dingers, 18 Runs and 14 RBI in those measly 63 AB. He was ML ready two years ago, either call him up and give him ABs or ship him out of town already ~ but don’t try to pass off guys like Tiffee when you are complaining about offense out of the other side of your mouth…

Aren't the Dodgers happy with DeWitt? (.315, 4, 23) If so, they aren't going to mess with one of their few successes by adding competition/less ABs with La Roche. Tiffee will be more than happy to sit on the bench and accumulate MLB time for his pension.

you call up tiffee so you dont waste laroches options.

We all know about your obsession with Andy "Darkstar's next Albert Pujols" LaRoche, but you need to think about this practically. First, look at Dodgerblue8787's post about not wasting options on LaRoche. Second, consider that the Dodgers just put Andruw Jones on the DL and that Tiffee can play the outfield, something LaRoche cannot do. While the Dodgers may have Young and Sweeney already on the bench, Sweeney is paid to pinch hit and Young isn't much of a defensive player either. This way, you have a guy who backs up at the outfield corners as well as at 3B and 1B without wasting options on LaRoche. Further, Tiffee has been a really hot bat at AAA (.404/.464/.609) and the Dodgers can only hope he can do more of the same, similar to how Luis Maza has performed in his call up.
"Aren't the Dodgers happy with DeWitt? (.315, 4, 23) If so, they aren't going to mess with one of their few successes by adding competition/less ABs with La Roche"
Given that the guy is in the running for ROTY, I definately think they are happy. It is also a plus that the guy has actually played competitive baseball with Kershaw, so he has a familiar face in the dugout.
BTW, anyone else notice that the Dodgers may be leaning toward satisfying Darkstar's dreams of having LaRoche, who definately didn't prove he was ML ready last year, play 3B by making Blake DeWitt Kent's replacement at 2B next year?

“First, look at Dodgerblue8787's post about not wasting options on LaRoche”
…Options are used by the year, not the assignment. One is already wasted this year by his being on the 40-Man and not in the majors.
“Second, consider that the Dodgers just put Andruw Jones on the DL and that Tiffee can play the outfield, something LaRoche cannot do.”
…Really? Its an experiment the Dodgers played around with him in LF in the minors ~ my understanding is that it didn’t go that great though… LaRoche or DeWitt can be tried there just the same, and will probably do just as well as Tiffee and his whole 11 games of experience…
“Further, Tiffee has been a really hot bat at AAA (.404/.464/.609) and the Dodgers can only hope he can do more of the same, similar to how Luis Maza has performed in his call up.”
…Ok man, you stick to your dreams of leaving uber-prospects in the minors while going to the playoffs using stop-gaps and overpriced Vets instead, maybe you’ll get lucky and they will bring in someone like Delgado or Sexson and possibly finalize that 2 year contract they were negotiating with Tony Clark this offseason… I’ll stick to my dream of actually playing the better, and much more longterm options available to me…
…22 Runs, 15 RBI, .476 OBP / .456 SLG (despite so few hits) and 31 BB to 8 K in 25 games, with a career .308/.411/.557, 112 R, 95 RBI, 33/2/32 and 95 BB to 82 K line in 530-ish AB in AAA ~ honestly, why in the world would anyone one want to play this kid…

Because he has been thoroughly outplayed at the MLB level by a guy who wasn't on the 40 man until the first day of the season, and has shown a nice propensity for injury. Not to mention that he risks being like Todd Greene or Brandon Wood (been watching him play well below projections lately, despite playing time?)
LaRoche would be wasting at bats by sitting on the bench, when he can be finding the stroke that has apparently alluded him so far at AAA.

The Dodgers are set in the outfield, with all 3 members of the current outfield producing on both offense and defense. Oh, and remember what happened when they tried to put Loney in RF? Let LaRoche get his ABs in Vegas and then shift DeWitt to 2B and bring in LaRoche next year. Also, Kent is bound to get hurt at some point, so that would also get LaRoche some time.

Oh, BTW Darkstar, since you are so enamored with sabermetrics, here is a stat you will love. DeWitt leads all regular MLB 3B in range factor.

ok well i guess screw the options quote. but really call him up and have him sit? nah dude dewitt will most likely slump soon but still. young got the shaft, he played highschool ball about 15 miles from me. he rakes. he should take the second base job. he looked good in st. one of the outfielders will be gone after this year. throw laroche on a corner spot.
