« Hanley Ramirez To Sign Long Term | Main | Scenarios: Bonds In The American League »

Odds And Ends: Neshek, Gallardo, Casanova, Henn, Haynes

Couple of injuries, couple of designations, and a waiver claim.

  • Twins reliever Pat Neshek has an acute partial tear of the UCL. Yes, that's the Tommy John ligament. He won't throw for at least three months, so his season is essentially over. There's no word on whether he'll undergo surgery. I remember hearing over the winter that Neshek was having elbow problems.
  • Not that we didn't pretty much know this already, but Yovani Gallardo has confirmed that he'll have surgery on his torn ACL. My fantasy team weeps.
  • With Ramon Castro coming off the DL, the Mets have DFA Raul Casanova. The best bet is that he'll clear waivers and head to AAA.
  • The Padres have claimed LHP Sean Henn off waivers. He was DFA by the Yankees last week. He was once a highly touted prospect, reportedly hitting 100 on the gun (though I think those reports were exaggerated).
  • With the return of Cliff Floyd from the DL, the Rays have no room for OF Nathan Haynes, and have designated him for assignment.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see the Nats snag Cassanova. They've done enough skimping of the Mets catching leftovers over the last few years already, and they still need the help. Cassanova did a solid job for the Mets. He and Jesus Flores would make a digestible tandem while they wait for Estrada and LoDuca.

Well, when your first two C options are Paul LoDuca & Johnny Estrada it's not like you've tried too hard to fill that hole in the first place.

That's a shame about Neshek. He wasn't having a great start to the year, but I would imagine this probably has something to do with it as it carried over from last year.

Nice guy, fun ballplayer to watch. I love seeing him pitch.

I hope Casanova does make it back to AAA. He won me over while he was here, almost to a point where I preferred his switch hitting power bat over Castro and his feast or famine style. But Castro should be okay batting against only lefties. I would actually be surprised if Casanova doesnt end up on another ML team, he switch hits, calls a solid game, throws well, and has a bit of pop from both sides of the plate. What more would you want from a backup catcher. The Nats make sense, I can also see the Yankees bring him in and split time with Molina until Posada is ready to catch again.

I traded-

Soriano
Blanton
Aybar

for

Gallardo
Y. Escobar (i needed a solid 2B)
A. Gordon

I dropped gordon, and gallardo got hurt.

=(

I don't know if its accurate or not that Sean Henn once through 100 mph, but if he did, that had to be about 6 years ago. Before anyone knew who he was. About 5 years ago he had Tommy John surgery, and his velocity was never the same afterwards.

A lot of guys seem to gain ~2mph after Tommy John, but he supposedly lost about 5mph.

It was just a few months ago when many Twins fans were happy trading Nathan and letting Neshek come in and close.

Looks the Twins knew what they were doing after all.
