| O's Not Planning Long-Term Deals For Markakis, Jones »

If the Reds slip out of contention in May, Walt Jocketty might begin to field offers for corner outfielders Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn. Both are paid well and have at least some control over trade destinations. According to MLB.com's Jim Molony, "a few teams are having their scouts keep an eye" on the pair in case they become available.
The standard speculation for Griffey is that he could be traded back to Seattle after he gets his 600th home run with the Reds. Junior might be a nice boost in right field for the Ms if Wladimir Balentien needs time to adjust. I doubt the Mariners would give up Jeff Clement for Griffey though. There's been some Chicago speculation, never mind that both the Cubs and Sox are set at the corner outfield positions.
Dunn would help the Padres, who are last in baseball in both OBP and SLG. The Jays, Mets, or Indians could also make sense.

Is it out of the possibility for Griffey to play center again? I assume that's where the Cubs speculation comes from. I know he hasn't played center for a while and his age and health means it can't be his permanent position, but it seems to me that asking him to do it for a few months might be reasonable.

I'd love to have Griffey in Cleveland, playing right field (or left if he can handle it.) What do you think the Reds would want in return?
Posted by: UndeniableMagistrate | May 01, 2008 at 11:06 AM
The real question is if anyone will offer more value then the Reds would receive in compensatory draft picks, and since Dunn and Griffey both stand to be Type A players, they may choose to let them walk.

This is stupid. The cubs have lke 7 outfielders. Soriano, Fukudome, Pie, Johnson, and even Derosa and Ward. What we need is a starting pitcher, because Marquis is not going to cut it.

dont forget about murton!

If the Braves didn't need a pitcher so badly, I'd love to see Dunn in LF for Atlanta.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | May 01, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Where would you put Dunn in San Diego especially if Headley is going to play LF very soon?
I just don't see where he'd fit until next year, and then in right field and I don't think he could handle that when LF in CINCINNATI is difficult for him.

The Padres are not 1 Adam Dunn away from contending. Also someone pointed out that his bat has slowed down and thus, his walks are up. So why would any non-contending team, like the Padres, trade anything of value for a half-season of Dunn? To get draft picks?
Posted by: linuspauling | May 01, 2008 at 12:31 PM
I think Griffey or Dunn would help the Padres. Dunn has always been a guy that will get 100 walks a year, not someone who's bat has slowed down. Despite their horrid start, I would be shocked if the Padres don't end up in contention by the end of the season. They desperately need some more pop in that lineup.

Didn't Junior already nix a deal to SD a few years back? Wasn't for Phil Nevin? What makes you think he would accept a deal there this go around?
Seattle would be an ideal landing spot for Junior and its even been said Seattle is one of the few teams he would lift his no-trade clause for.
Problem now is that the Mariners have deemed Balentien their everyday RFer. The only way Junior comes to play RF for Seattle is if Balentien falters. Bavasi really shot himself in the foot re-signing Kenji Johjima for 3 more years when he is in the midst of a horrible start. Johjima looks awful and will be getting 8 million for through his 35/36 year old season. Really stupid move when you have a blue-chip Jeff Clement ready to step in. Now Clement is forced to split time between C and DH. DH being the ideal spot for Junior.
Looks like Seattle just through a monkey wrench in a possible Junior acquisition by extending Johjima.
We'll have to wait and see.

i think the jays got enough to get Dunn in a Jays uniform
Posted by: Larsen101 | May 01, 2008 at 05:29 PM
I'd take either for the Jays please Griffey or Dunn for LF/DH. At this point I'd have to consider Dunn for 1st base to.

I still see Griffey becoming either a Cub, an Indian or a Mariner. I believe the Cubs would try him in center, giving Pie and/or Johnson time there. Or they'd move Fukudome to center and put Griffey in right. He'd be a great bat for them, and really make that lineup scary. I'd rather have Roberts though. He'd likely end up costing less, something like Colvin, Marshall and Petrick. I'm not quite so sure the Reds eat any of the contract though.
As for the Mariners, I agree that they likely wouldn't move him for Griffey. Clement appears to have nearly as good a bat right now, and his long term value is looking pretty damn good. If he can hang it behind the plate he'd be an elite catcher with his hitting. I could see the Reds targeting a package of something like Brandon Morrow and Michael Saunders. Morrow could either make that bullpen really good, with Cordero, and long term still fill out an awesome rotation with Harang, Cueto, Volquez and Bailey.
And I could see the Indians going after him as well. The Reds would almost definately target pitching from them, because they have a good amount and not much in terms of positional talent. The Reds already have Bruce, Votto, Phillips, Stubbs, Francisco, Frazier, Encarnacion, and Mesoraco, they have no lack of quality young hitters. The Indians would probably be willing to give up Aaron Laffey (or Sowers if they preferred him) as well as another prospect and possibly another one as well.
I think its more likely that Dunn just ends up sticking around all year. Unless he can net them a quality package, and I'm not quite sure that'd happen considering he can only get dealt to ten teams, I think he ends up playing out the string in Cincinnati. But in that case the Reds would be stuck with just Bruce in the outfield, so that's why they'd likely target an outfielder (Colvin, Saunders) in a trade.

keep in mind here. Dunn cannot be traded until June 15th...and even then, he has no-trade clause not affecting 10 teams.
likely teams:
1. yankees
2. red sox
3. braves
4. white sox
5. indians
6. tigers
7. angels
8. dodgers
9. mariners
10. cubs
you know..winning teams with lots of money.
sorry 3rd, 4th and 5th place teams. SOL on getting that power bat...
i hate partial no-trade clauses.

problem with the theory of griffey going to seattle to be a DH...he doesn't want to be a DH! anybody watch the web gems last week? griffey can still play the field like the best of them. What i respect more than anything about griffey is that he always has played the game the right way and still does...unlike guys like barry bonds. this scenario could happen...about 3 years from now. griffey isn't moving...but if he does it will be as to play OF, not DH

Morrow and Saunders for Griffey? Not a chance.
The Mariners held Morrow out of the Bedard deal even with MacPhail hot after him. I believe that is one of the things that held that deal up so long.
I don't see why people are thinking Griffey has tremendous trade value right now. He is going to be owed at least 12 million this year (with his buyout) or he has to be paid his 8.5 million this year and 16 million next. That is a good chunk of change given Griffey's injury history and age.
That and he isn't real hot out of the gate this year. .248/4HRs/15RBI in the month of April. Only a .416 SLG %. There is no way Clement or Morrow are in any Griffey talks. I heard someone suggest Feierabend and Reed or maybe a Washburn + deal.
Posted by: thr33niL | May 01, 2008 at 08:21 PM
I actually like the idea of Washburn plus a prospect for Griffey. The Reds would have a pretty good rotation in Harang, Arroyo, Washburn, Cueto and Volquez, and with Bruce replacing Griffey it wouldn't leave much of a dent in their lineup. A good short term option for the Reds.
I knew that Clement was pretty much off limits, but I've read a lot of stuff from scouts who don't have much faith in Morrow. A lot of them say he's too much of a thrower and lacks the offspeed stuff to become a top starter. That seems to hinder his potential a lot and I thought that maybe the Mariners would consider moving him. But I do recall the Bedard trade and them not moving him so I guess that was simply some dumb thinking on my part.
I'm not quite sure Feierabend and Jeremy Reed makes much sense for Cincy unless they don't have to pay a dime. Feierabend is a best case #3 starter who will probably end up as a decent 4/5, and Reed is a average at best center fielder. The Reds could probably get a superior package from a different team. Maybe something like Juan Ramirez and Michael Saunders could work. But if the Mariners are gonna keep Clement, Morrow, Balentien, Betancourt, Lopez, Aumont and Triunfel off limits, then the Reds can probably get a better deal from the Cubs or Indians.

The Cubs have nowhere to play Griffey... He can't play centerfield as he doesn't have the range anymore... His new position is RF and they have Fukodome, so that doesn't work, and LF is Soriano, who doesn't have the instincts for CF and is getting equally as old...
Michael Saunders and Juan Ramirez is WAY too much! Ramirez and Aumont are in line to take Washburn's and Batista's spots in the rotation when they are gone. Ramirez is considered to be like Felix lite, probably a #2 with the potential to be a #1, but that's not as likely as him being a deuce for a MLB rotation.
The Reds want a place for Bruce to play, they want monitary relief, and they'd like an arm or two back... Think about Moyer going to Philly a couple years ago, who did the M's get?! Yeah good question! You're looking at a Ryan Feierabend, Ricky Orta, Rob Johnson for Griffey deal and they may ask them to take Freel to get that much more monitary relief, which would mean the Reds taking Cairo as a parts swapping.
Johnson is a great game caller and has Ivan Rodriguez-in-his-prime=type-wheels, combined with playing 80 games in Cincinnati's sand box, I mean bandbox stadium, he could hit 20 homeruns... In Seattle Johnson would be lucky to hit 10... A good comparison might be a young Jason Kendall... Rob Johnson has just been a victim of circumstance with Burke playing well, Kenji living up to his first contract (hold the first 22 of 29 games of 2008), and Clement being ready for the pros!
My point is that a lefty for the rotation and a catcher are their most glaring weaknesses in Cinci and those would have to be answered first! Ramirez doesn't answer those questions and the Mariners would want a guy like Joey Votto in return since they have similarly high ceilings...

I agree the cubs do need another ace in their staff. However getting Griffey makes perfect sense. they can move fukudome to center and use Griffey in RF it also allows Pinella to move Fukudome to the #2 hole wich is a perfefect fit. His high obp. will go well with Lee and Ramirez following. Also with Griffey hiting on the # 5 spot it brings good protection for Ramirez.

I hope everyone realizes that if Dunn AND Griffey are both traded....Sure, Bruce will be called up...but what nobody is talking about is.................................................
Barry Bonds will be signed.

cincy_11
I hope that is a knock on castenelli and not a hope that barry gets signed. BC has already started the process of alienating reds fans with his dirt move on firing Krivsky. If the Reds signed bonds, Cincinnati would be competing with the Marlins for lowest attendance.

Griffey = Seattle. Right field is waiting for him. DH is waiting for him. Seattle is waiting for him. Griffey will turn down any trade that is not with Seattle. There is no discussion. Everyone please stick to things you know.
