« Olney's Latest: Rockies, Padres, Braves, Sabathia | Main | Mariners To Release Sexson »
According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Braves are one team with "apparent interest" in Giants right fielder Randy Winn. Winn can play all three outfield positions. Lately the Braves have been using Brandon Jones in left, Gregor Blanco in center, and Jeff Francoeur in right. Matt Diaz will be out several more weeks with a knee injury, while Mark Kotsay has a lower back issue.
Winn, 34, is hitting a respectable .298/.359/.447 in 288 plate appearances. Winn's line would look better in center field, but Blanco has a tidy .375 OBP going. Winn makes $8MM this year and $8.25MM in '09. He can block trades to ten teams. I imagine Brian Sabean would settle for a marginal prospect if a team would take on all of Winn's contract.

I like Randy Winn. People say he is overpaid, but if you look at many other players with similar contracts...his stats match up.
That being said, he is blocking Nate Schierholtz and getting rid of his salary helps us sign a real 3B next season :)

A real 3b? Unless you're talking about Crede there is nothing to sign at 3b next season.

Winn would be a great pickup for the Braves (at least for this year), but I question whether they will open the pocketbook after being cheap in CF this offseason.
One nice thing about Winn is that he has been very consistent the past couple years and typically is a slow starter. The Braves aren't stuck with his slow start and can pretty much guarantee they are picking up a solid player.
Wonder if Brent Lillibridge would be enough. The Giants already have some no-hit SS prospects, but Lillibridge seemed like more than that before this year. At worst, he would be a defensive-minded utility guy who could play above-average defense at 2nd, SS, 3rd, and all 3 OF positions. At best his bat might come around to make him a slightly above-average SS.

I dunno if the Braves would be able to take on such a big salary considering they probably will have to invest in some key pieces this offseason (starting pitching depth with Smoltz on the mend and possibly destined for the bullpen, Tom Glavine possibly gone...a power bat to replace Mark Teixaira)

tmac -
I'm just saying it gives them room to breathe...whether FA or trade.
big -
Giants have enough middle infield with Burriss (Who is quickly earning SS next year / Velez (AAA) / Noonan (AA)
We need power at the Corner IF positions.

I was just thinking the other day that the braves could really use a leadoff guy who is a threat to steal some bases. yea they have some this year but a legitimate threat to take off. Reggie WIllits from the Angels is who i was thinking. He isnt getting alot of playing time out there, could man center while kotsay is banged up, bat leadoff and give us that threat. i know hes struggling this year but he also doesnt have that many ABs. In the games where the offense has struggled it fails to move guys and we can get a guy who can take a base more often we might score a few more runs. And he wouldnt cost 8 million! Also hope that Gonzalez can come in and be there closer, and then have the rest of the pen settle into there normal roles.

Deuce, i was actually thinking the same thing yesterday.... A name that came to my mind besides Willits was Tavares or Dejesus, but just for pure speculation..... Winn would bring a consistient presence to the lineup, in the form of what kotsay was before he got hurt. I would say do the deal, but dont give up lillibridge. Give up a marginal position prospect and see what happens.

I've watched Winn play the past 3 seasons and he's a solid professional.. The guy will hit .290 to .300, 10-14 HRs and steal 10 to 20 bases.. he plays solid D. - h as probably the most accurate arm in the Giants OF.
Not to mention he's clutch! He'd be a good pick up for any team. I just hope the Giros can get a decent player in return.

bravesbeast,
Willy Taveras is awful. He can run. That's it. He walked 21 times last year. Blanco is a better player for a lot less money.
If the Giants would take Lillibridge for Winn, I'd consider it. Lil' Bridge is playing his way from prospect to suspect this season.
Still, I'd rather have Brian Giles than Winn. Their contracts are similar. Giles isn't as versatile as Winn but he gets on base more often and hits for more power.

Am I the only Braves fan who thinks this is a horrible deal? Seriously? Why do we need a guy making Randy Winn money, at Randy Winn's age, who doesn't hit for power. I have said it before and I will maintain it. THe BRaves do not need Starting Pitching, would it be nice to have more, YES, it always is, but do we NEED it, no. We DO, however NEED relief help, and a clutch power bat that can hit in the .280 range or better...or someone with a lower average but more power. Frenchy ain't cutting it this year and all the benefits that Winn can offer we could just promote from AAA in Josh Anderson for a lot less money. The Braves don't need a lead-off hitter, we have those, we just need Bobby Cox to put them in the lead-off spot. I would much rather get Rich Harden, or Holliday, or a strong bullpen guy.
ALSO, and here's something to think about, and I know this is crazy fandom talking, but I thinmk there is a small, very small possibility we could trade Teixeira and still make the playoffs. I think McCann is more than capable of filling in at cleanup and protecting Chipper, plus if we got some really good young prospects...perhaps an outfielder who was very close to major league ready we could be set. Barbaro Canizares is tearing it up at AAA at 1B, however I know he is somewhat of a defensive liability; I would still be interested in seeing what was out there if I am Frank Wren.

"but I think there is a small, very small possibility we could trade Teixeira and still make the playoffs"
I posed this same scenario on another board yesterday. Tex isn't exactly tearing things up. Get some guys back on from the DL (hopefully it won't take Gonzo long to be in mid season form), maybe get a suitable 1B in the trade (or put Diaz there when he gets off the DL) and get some more pitching or a big bat in left and I think we're in just as good shape as we'd be in by keeping Tex. No way we sign him after this season anyway.

The Giants and Braves should make a trade involving Randy Win n and Mark Teixeira. They both need what the other has and since the Braves don't really want teixeira and the Giants desperately need a first basemen i think it might work. Of course the Giants might have to throw something else in. Of course if the Giants do sign Tex they should try for an extention.
