Heyman's Latest: Mariners, Brewers

Let's take a gander at Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com.

  • Heyman says three GMs who would have interest in Ichiro Suzuki have been told he's not available.  Nonetheless, Heyman suggests trading the face of the franchise would be the best way to shake things up in Seattle.
  • The Mariners have other valuable trade commodities: Erik Bedard, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre.  Most of the team's other vets aren't valued highly, though Jarrod Washburn has strung together three decent starts.  Felix Hernandez would draw a ton of interest, but the Mariners aren't expected to make him available.
  • The Brewers' have a host of quality prospects to use as trade bait.  However, MLB.com's Jim Molony did say yesterday that he didn't expect a major acquisition.

so basically, the article lists a lot of names, but doesnt actually have much in the way of substance?

seems about normal for Heyman.

Even the thought of dealing Felix Hernandez is laughable. He's 22 years old and is the type of ace pitcher you build around. If he was 32, you deal him. But 22.. come on.

Bedard, Ibanez, Beltre, Washburn, and even Ichiro should be shopped. If the Mariners deal Ichiro now, they can get value for his declining years. They have him signed for a TON and he already looks like he has lost a step and his bat isn't the same as seasons past. Trading him a year early is better than a year late. I can really see Ichiro becoming a .280-.300 hitter with 25 SBs in a year or two. 18 million a year for that is bad business. If they can get ML close players for Ichiro now, they should do it.

Seeing how this is Seattle.. they will keep Ichiro until he pulls a 'Kaz Sasaki' on us when he's 38 or so (wants out of his contract to go back to Japan). I'm telling you.. Deal Ichiro if you get good pieces for him.

Rumor has it that Beltre won't re-sign with Seattle again so he has to be considered since he's not going be part of the future plans beyond '09. I'm still fuming over the Kenji extension. Stupidest thing ever. I think that cements Clement at 1B for '09. I can already see them trying Clement at first base later this year when Sexson is released. WASTE! Clement has shown to be really solid behind the dish and should be a catcher since thats where his value is at its highest. I never accused the Mariners of being smart though.

Washburn is a giveaway and Ibanez might be able to snag a few B prospects. Nothing ground breaking. I think Vidro gets released before Sexson now that Clement is back and hitting. No use for a DH that can't hit or play the field.

Bedard needs to be held onto since his value is low. You can't justify dealing the world for the guy and selling him for 50 cents on the dollar 4 months later. Just indefensible. You have to try and make him work unless you can get similar value to what you gave up to get him (doubtful).

The Mariners are a mess.

anyone heard about Sheets to the Stros? Read an article from Justice on Chron.com. It was laughable but just curious.

Looks like the sheets to Houston article was referring to his impending FA. I cant see anyway that the Brewers would trade Sheets to a division opponent.

Speaking of laughable: the thought of dealing the one singular player who has had a bigger financial impact on any one team in the history of the game.

"Shaking it up" = $100's of millions lost in revenue and maybe the dumbest move in recent history. Ichiro is like a god in Japan, he's basically A-Rod, Tom Cruise and Michael Jordan all rolled into one over there. Any team that got rid Ichiro would lose the license to print money that he gives the team.

Hey Tim, off topic, but the 300x250 banners under the posts are a little distracting and doesn't work well with the flow of the page. Maybe put them on the right column, and 468x60's between the posts? Just a suggestion. Thanks for the great site!

ah yeah he was talking about FA. Sometimes i dont get to read whole articles at work?

Declining? The guy is on pace to shatter his personal best for SB in 1 year and is doing it in a line up that absolutely sucks. His lower BA is mostly due to the fact that he is trying to do something for his crap team as opposed to letting his game flow. Oh, and lets not forget that he is the best defensive outfielder, maybe even the best defensive player period, in all of baseball.

Even more true given that the M's are owned by a Japanese company.

People need to realize that he could OPS like 300 and make 4 errors a game and they'd still play him everyday.

Its money over everything in this case. No chance in heck Ichiro will never not be in another MLB uni other than the M's one.

the ms r owned by a japanese company? oooh nice inside info. i still think they should trade him. i agree with the making money and marketing part but the best way to make money is to win ballgames. that contract looks fine now but very very soon it wont. also from what ive heard hes not a good clubhouse guy whatsoever. when u rebuild u have to have a good guy in the clubhouse as well as on the feild. personally i would try and get rid of anyone making over 5 million and just start over. then they could start making good decisions with their money hopefully. last year the whole world except for the ms knew that carlos silva contract was stupid. how do people like bavasi get these jobs?

The Japanese company is Nintendo. Ever heard of it?

The M's are a mess. I throw my support to keeping Ichiro, Hernandez and Ibanez, trading Beltre and Washburn, vaporizing Sexson (ASAP) and Vidro and making Johjima the bat boy for Ichiro.

I like Clement at catcher, and he belongs there. Jamie can back him up for another year.

As for Ichiro not being a clubhouse guy, he's got language and cultural barriers. Don't sweat it! Bavasi traded last year's clubhouse guy, Jose Gullien. Buy one...just not another Brett Boone.

i hope that comment about nintendo wasnt as arrogant as it came off. maybe u r from seattle but im not. i have no clue who owns the ms. as for ichiro i think that laguage barrier excuse is pretty lame. hes been here almost a decade. learn the lingo buddy.

If anyone could point me to a link that proves that Ichiro is worth hundred's of millions of dollars to the M's I would appreciate it.

I think people are significantly overvaluing his drawing power. Remember how Dice-K was supposed to bring in $50m ... last report I read was something to the effect that his impact was somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 or $9m.

One more thought.

Even if Ichiro generates that much revenue can't the M's simply jack up the asking price? At that point a team making the trade is paying for Ichiro's abundant talent + the "guaranteed" revenue stream he supposedly brings with him.

I always thought the Mariners were owned by a former Nintendo executive, not actually BY Nintendo. Which at one point was kind of true Hiroshi Yamauchi richest man in Japan transfered ownership to Nintendo America in 2004.

But more importantly, Ichiro and King Felix are absolutely untradable. That's the Yankees trading Jeter, and Joba x 10.

The Mariners need to cut Sexson, and Vidro, these are more of the should have been done in March moves.

Oh and though my opinion is close to meaningless, boooooooooo on the new look. Hopefully the logging in issues are over with.

As far as I'm concerned, the issue isn't how much a player is worth on the market. Face it, the market is over-blown and doesn't represent team value. The only the value it represents is someone's ego. That said, M's fans want team improvement, not to discard those with something to build on.

Now, the issue of Erik Bedard has most of us baffled. He is supposed to be a firstline starter. But, he seems to have so many little "issues" that frankly he's neither fish nor fowl. Maybe with run support he's a 14 to 18 game winner. But, with the likes of Big Richie (strike-out or fly-out), he's just another mug.

ARod,

“Oh and though my opinion is close to meaningless, boooooooooo on the new look. Hopefully the logging in issues are over with.”

Not close, completely meaningless. Many feel the same. Unfortunately no, but you get to see the old page when it denies you… :)

Joel,

“i hope that comment about nintendo wasnt as arrogant as it came off.”

…How can you say that moments after:
“the ms r owned by a japanese company? oooh nice inside info.”

…do unto others man…

"There are a lot of good players that still have value that others recognize,'' Pelekoudas asserted.

HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA......HA, HA, HA, HA, he, he, HA, Ha ha.

Oh...man...that was good.

Guess we found out Guru's true identity.

Anything worth having on that team is basically untouchable- Ichiro (whose contract is ugly anyway), Felix, and... OK, just Ichiro and King Felix- and the rest ain't worth s#$*!

Naw, that's not exactly true; I actually really like Betancourt and the young'uns are interesting- Clement and Morrow...and to a lesser extent, Balentien- but I doubt the M's are looking to part with them. That just leaves Beltre and Bedard: two overpriced 'stars' who aren't playing like it. Nice.

I hope Guru decides to chime in with a 12,000 word essay on the terrific state of the Mariners. After that last post revealing his trade plans- including getting Jose Reyes, Mark Teixeira, John Maine, Jon Lester, and Jacoby Ellsbury- among others- in deals of varying levels of absurdity, I can't wait for his take on Heyman's article. I'm like a kid at Christmas!

"Bavasi traded last year's clubhouse guy, Jose Gullien."

Er, no, Jose Guillen left after the Mariners declined the team option and Guillen declined the player option(both part of the mutual option) in his contract for 2008. Then he signed as a free agent with the Royals.

"Anything worth having on that team is basically untouchable- Ichiro (whose contract is ugly anyway), Felix, and... OK, just Ichiro and King Felix- and the rest ain't worth s#$*!"

I don't know how much Ichiro is worth to other teams, but he and Felix aren't the only valuable properties. True, the team is a mess, but let's not be crazy here. Putz, Beltre, and Bedard(when all healthy) are very tradable commodities. I don't know if they'd ever trade Ibanez, but he could fetch 1 or 2 halfway decent prospects. And if the M's just make 5 players untouchable: Felix Hernandez, Jeff Clement, Brandon Morrow, and minor leaguers Carlos Triunfel and Phillipe Aumont, then they have a solid core to build around. And that's all they need, really.

"I always thought the Mariners were owned by a former Nintendo executive, not actually BY Nintendo. Which at one point was kind of true Hiroshi Yamauchi richest man in Japan transfered ownership to Nintendo America in 2004."

Well, what you said is kind of true. When the team was sold in 1992, they were technically sold to Nintendo of America, which was headed by a man named Minoru Arakawa, the son-in-law of Hiroshi Yamauchi and CEO of Nintendo of America(while Yamauchi was CEO of Ninteno, Inc. in Japan).

[Of course, Nintendo of America is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nintendo, Inc.]

Basically, then-U.S. Senator from Washington Slade Gorton had been the chief organizer of trying to save the Mariners when previous owner Jeff Smulyan said he wanted to sell the team in 1992. Gorton contacted Arakawa and Howard Lincoln(who was senior vice president of Nintendo of America at the time) and asked about their interest in investing in baseball. Gorton wanted to ask Arakawa if there was any interest back in Japan, and eventually Yamauchi came back with a "Yes, I'm interested, but only if you round up local investors as well" angle, so Yamauchi would put up the largest investment, but several local investors(Chris Larson, John Ellis, John McCaw, and others) would put forth local money.

Once the sale was made, Yamauchi would not act directly or vote, so instead, his son-in-law Arakawa would vote on his behalf. All of these people--Arakawa, Lincoln, Ellis, Larson, McCaw, and a few others, along with president Chuck Armstrong, would form the Baseball Club of Seattle

(And I think Arakawa retired as chairman of Nintendo of America, but is still on the board of directors of the Baseball Club of Seattle.)

Interestingly enough, because of the controversy at the time of having foreign ownership of an MLB team, the Nintendo/Nintendo of America majority ownership would only get 49% voting interest, while the minority owners would get 51% voting interest.

And, you're right--in 2004, Yamauchi sold his remaining direct shares in the team back to Nintendo(Nintendo of America), and he retired from his post of president of Nintendo and also retired as chairman of the Board of Directors of Nintendo.

But even as the retired head of the company which owns Nintendo of America, which in turn owns the Mariners, he still has a say on what goes on apparently, as it's widely speculated that his fingerprints were on the Kenji Johjima extension. Make of that what you will.
