Sherman's Latest: Sabathia, Fielder, Marte

The New York Post's Joel Sherman has a host of rumors in his new column.

  • Sherman believes the Indians are leaning toward trading C.C. Sabathia.  He names the usual suspects (Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs) but also throws the Brewers into the mix based on the opinion of an "AL talent evaluator."
  • Speaking of the Brewers, Sherman believes Prince Fielder will be available "almost definitely in the offseason" and perhaps even this summer.  Doug Melvin says he's not exploring it but never rules out anything.  The presence of Mat Gamel and Matt LaPorta plus Fielder's unwillingness to sign long-term could lead to a deal.  Fielder figures to jump up to at least $7-8MM upon reaching arbitration for the first time.
  • The Yankees have Damaso Marte atop their list, but the Pirates want something better than two draft picks in return.  He's looking like a Type A free agent.
  • Walt Jocketty wants to "clean house."  The usual players are named, but Sherman also mentions Bronson Arroyo as a possibility.

Bring Fielder to Boston!

Wichever team that doesn't get Teixera in the offseason could turn right to Fielder. How about to the Rays for Wade Davis, Jake McGee, and a couple other prospects. Its hard to make a deal, though because the Brewers sre locked in at a lot of key positions: 1b, ss, 2b, 3b, lf, rf. They only need pitching, cf, and catcher help.

"Wichever team that doesn't get Teixera in the offseason could turn right to Fielder. How about to the Rays for Wade Davis, Jake McGee, and a couple other prospects."

NOOOOOO. The Rays would NEVER EVER EVER do that. They could probably land Fielder for those two stud prospects alone. Davis and McGee are cornerstones of their future pitching rotation with Price, Kazmir, Shields and Garza (its always nice to have six young near MLB ready pitchers with ace potential isnt it?). I would be shocked if they made a move like this, this team needs to be built around pitching, like they are doing. Making this move would almost ruin a lot of the progress they have been making. If the Rays make a run at a big bat for 2009, it will include only one big time prospect, like either Davis or McGee, along with other good young guys like Andy Sonnastine or Jason Hammel.

YES WALT CLEAN HOUSE!

should be an exciting next 6 weeks

O.K. maybe get rid of the other 2 prospects, but the Brewers are going to want a lot for Prince. I could also see them trading for a different bat like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay.

With 2 of the hottest hitting prospects in baseball currently tearing up AA, it would make sense for the Brewers to trade Prince for top quality young pitching. The probable loss of Ben Sheets to free agency - Doug Melvin is refusing to talk long-term deal until after the season - would leave the Brewers, like the Texas Rangers c.2000, heavy on power hitting but woefully short of quality pitching. A Prince Fielder trade could redress the balance.

With Giambi possibly leaving the Yanks this offseason (he'll be a Type A so that might influence the decision to let him walk), what do you think the Yanks would have to give up to get Prince Fielder? I'd much rather have the Yanks get him than Teixiera.

Sherman's reporting seems a little suspect to me. Who are Jocketty's 'counterparts' to which he has had these discussions? I would be very surprised if he was vocal about dumping Dunn, Arroyo, etc.. It is akin to letting everyone at your poker table know that you would like to land a another ace on the river to make a full house....before even placing a bet. I keep my ear to the Reds' beat, and Jocketty has not been so open yet, at least not to anyone not named Sherman. Why would he? Also, I would be surprised if Dunn is traded before being offered a reasonable contract, which hasn't even been discussed yet. Even if he declines the offer, at least Jocketty can say he tried before having his 'hands tied' to trading/releasing him.

another day, another fan severely over valuing their own team's prospects. You do realize the value of Fielder do you not? At any rate, I don't think it's a fit. Not the kind of guy the Rays would trade for. I'd look more towards an outfielder.

The Brewers could afford Sabathia prospects wise but are they in it?

for some reason i feel a BIG 3 way deal coming with CC going to one team..Prince going to the another team but im not sure what would go to the 3rd team

"The Brewers could afford Sabathia prospects wise but are they in it?"

Definitely in it for the wild card. St Louis is injury plagued now and Im still not a believer in the Marlins. All the other contenders ( i.e Braves,Mets,Dodgers,Astros) are falling by the wayside, so absolutely, they are still in it.

Now getting back to Fielder, I'd trade him in heartbeat if i could THIS SUMMER. The guy has shown no inclination to stay in Milwaukee, hasnt come close to having the year he did in '07 and no doubt will be a DH in probably 2 years, so whats the point of keeping him? You would be able to get a kings ransom for him, in particular, some young pitching. You have Laporta and Gamel, who according to scouts, are major league ready and will be under control for cheap over the next few years.

hallofamer2000..probably alot..like melky since they really dont got a CF for the future i think( i could be wrong)..phil hughes probably since ben sheets is a soon to be free agent...and thats probably just a start

I think Hughes is still untouchable.

Did you mean that the Brewers or Yankees don't have another centerfielder for the future? If you meant the Yankees, they do (Brett Gardner), I don't know about the Brewers though.

The Yankees could start the deal at Kennedy and Melky. (I know that's not enough, they should just start it there)

no i ment the Brewers...with the whole santana stuff during the winter... i know Yanks farm system lol...but if Sheets walks after this season..the Brewers are probably going to want something better then Kennedy since Sheets is an Ace type pitcher

CC for Prince, straight up.

Hughes is untouchable?

Are we really back in the winter off-season again?

Hughes' stock has continued to plummet. The guy has gone from being a #1 starter to now most scouts labeling him a 3/4 type talent.

And please, please, stop trying to pawn off Melky. Cabrera's solid 714 OPS isn't worth jack. Considering he had a hot start, it makes his stats look even worse.

Meanwhile Johan is posting an ERA under 3.00. I still can't believe that players like Cabrera and Kennedy prevented the Yanks from making the trade.

Instead of contending for the top spot, the Yanks are languishing with Baltimore - fighting it out for 3rd place in the AL East. Nice job.

bj i really dont know much about the brewers farm system.. if i came off like the yanks should "pawn" melky off on the brewers i didnt mean that... i didnt think the brewers had a CF of the future...but i could be wrong

“Hughes is untouchable? Are we really back in the winter off-season again? Hughes' stock has continued to plummet.”

...I actually don’t agree with you, and think that Hughes is (or atleast should be) untouchable because of the fact that his stock has plummeted so much. NY would be selling low on him, and would probably be very unwise to do so…

“And please, please, stop trying to pawn off Melky. Cabrera's solid 714 OPS isn't worth jack. Considering he had a hot start, it makes his stats look even worse.”

…That however is completely correct in my eyes. He was never a prospect to begin with, he has only been able to get semi-close to LgAvg numbers in his 4 tries, and his bat would be beyond pitiful in the corner OF spots while 80% of the league have a no-brainer choice to use ahead of him in center ~ the term “value” doesn’t exactly jump out at you. Where Mil is possibly a fit if they don’t have a solid option for the next few years, his value will still have to be rather low because of the above ~ much like it was to the Twins this past offseason…

Prince for Hughes, Kennedy or any other over-hyped Yankees prospect is an absolute joke.

GD31892, what scouts are you talking about?

You're completely overreacting to Hughes' struggles and completely underrating him. Yeah, how dare a 22 year old struggle. Who cares about how much he struggled and how most people do and still consider him a supreme talent? Who cares about how he had a 4.46 ERA in the AL east as a 21 year old?

The 22 year old had four bad starts while pitching with broken ribs. Release him.

Sorry, the post above meant to be directed towards "bjsguess." And you're completely off regarding the Santana deal. They didn't get him because they clearly didn't want him and to have to pay him 20 million, plus 10 including luxury tax.

The Brewers will likely move Hart to CF once LaPorta is ready to take over in RF...probably 2010. That would, unfortunately, make Tony Gwynn, Jr. expendable.

I'd like to see the Brewers go after Sabathia for the stretch run...they could, of course, offer Gwynn, as well as Alcides Escobar and an arm or two. They could kill two birds with one stone--dealing Fielder for Sabathia and, say, Garko or Casey Blake. But, my guess, is that the Crew would prefer to deal a few prospects for Sabathia and keep Fielder for the rest of this year.

Almost half of AA Huntsville will get promoted to AAA next year, especially Gamel, LaPorta, Salome, Hammond, and Welch...making anyone and everyone at AAA Nashville expendable in a trade...only not much of value there. Melvin is going to wait and see how his A level players pan out before dealing Fielder.

First off, as a brewers fan, I think it is time, and I hope prince would be traded at the deadline. I personally do not know if Melvin has the balls to trade Prince. What is it going to look like to milwaukee fans if he trades one of the best young power hitters in MLB history for prospects? Part of his job is to make it look to the fans like he is doing a good job, so im not sure how likely a trade deadline blockbuster is. I would really like to see it happen however.

Next, I think that ben sheets will resign with milwaukee in the offseason. He already makes somewhere around 11 or 12 million a year, and im not sure how much more he thinks he can get. I could see the brewers offering him a 4 or 5 year deal for 45-60 million

With the first post, i would adore that kind of trade. Thoes are 2 MLB ready prospects who could even pitch in the MLB this year for the brewers. If I was GM and thoes two prospects were offered to me, I would accept in a heartbeat. I do not know however if Tampa Bay could sign him to a long term deal.

Next regarding a couple posts, There is no way the brewers will trade Prince for CC. That would be INCREDIBLY dumb. The brewers organizations best players (other than braun and hart) are in AA ball right now, and the team (and the fans) will not be satisfied if they simply make a playoff push this year. The brewers plan on winning now, but also plan on winning later, and they plan on seriously contending in the next few years, but frankly, this isn't the year. The team is young and incosistent and yovani is hurt, the team shouldnt make a playoff push this year, just keep the fans interested and stay close until the end, and the brewers arent going to trade matt laporta and or mat gamel for a pitcher that will give them less than 15 starts this year and a little draft pick compensation.

As for the post about the yankees, i dont really think the brewers will deal prince for their pitching. I think it is much more likely for the yankees to attempt to sign prince in the offseason.

Regarding the last post, prince should be traded in any deal because the crew could seriously use some young stud pitching depth, and hart wont move to center, because no matter what, if prince is traded or when he leaves for free agency, Laporta will be at first (and Laporta should be in milwaukee before 2010. ((There were rumors that if the brewers fell out of contention, he could possibly get some MLB playing time this season)).

I really hope the brewers trade prince for some serious pitching prospects (like Wade Davis and Jacob Macgee), rather than let him slip away into free agency. His value is as high as it will ever be (since hes 23 and has already had a 50 hr season), and I think the brewers would be much better suited just getting rid of him.
