There's really not that many bad deals on there. Even the infamous Pierzynski trade doesn't look quite as awful now with Liriano struggling.
I think most of the flack Sabean gets from Giants fans is over free agent signings he made (Zito) and didn't make (Vlad).

your conclusions and preditions based on the GM's history would be more helpful.
Thanks for your hard work!

I don't want to look, does the spreadsheet just say AWFUL?

its not that bad of a history...in fact most of those trades benefited the giants in the long run.

These trade histories are fun too look at...is JP "Douchebag" Ricciardi's in your plans for the near future? I realize it is A LOT of work and don't really expect it to happen...but I think it would be interesting to see a GM's draft history (the first 1 or 2 rounds anyways...maybe mention a sleeper that made it big or something) as well as a GM's history of signing free agents and giving away 1st round picks and who that first round pick turned out to be

jaysfan, usually with each I have different tabs, trades, signings, draft picks, and then gm profile. they should be at the bottom of the spreadsheet. for the draft pick section, i usually include successful players and prospects in the baseball america top 100, then next to each I have if it was a supplemental or compensatory pick next to that. I'll look into the free agent idea for the signing section though. thanks for the suggestions. The next GM will likely be the Cubs Jim Hendry, but I'll do Ricciardi next.

It would be great if the spreadsheet were unlocked so we could resize the columns.
If you try to resize them, it says you need to turn off protection, and to do this you need a password.
If there are more than a couple of names in a column not all of them show up and you cannot scroll them.
Other than that, a VERY interesting project.

Not as bad as I thought. The Liriano/Nathan deal still hurts but we could've given up Armando Benitez for Pierzynski and I'd still be pissed (because AJ sucks and Armando should've been DFAd instead of traded for Messenger...where is he now?). The deals for Kent, Brian Johnson, Snow, Schmidt were all shrewd moves and depending on how the Merk and Denker pan out, he should be considered a decent GM.

Thanks for the great work!!!
Excellent spreadsheet!
Here are the items that came to mind, not in any particular order:
* International free agents should include Pablo Sandoval, Waldis Joaquin, Henry Sosa, Angel Villalona, and now Rafael Rodriguez. Pedro Feliz?
* Jeremy Accardo was signed as an undrafted player
* Eugenio Velez signed as 6 year free agent I believe, not sure which tab he would fit in
* Might mention Jesse Foppert, Madison Bumgarner, Nick Noonan, Travis Ishikawa, Wendell Fairley, John Bowker, Jonathan Sanchez, Emmanuel Burriss, Nate Schierholtz, and can now add Buster Posey to draft picks.
Don't know if you include all major leaguers under this, but Jon Coutlangus and Brian Burres have played signficant time with Reds and Orioles, respectively, and Brian Buscher played a lot for the Twins this year too. They are all former Giants farm hands released by Sabean.
* Reportedly the Kirk Rueter trade was masterminded by Sabean, from what I recall, though under the old GM's tenure.

Zobak, if you have access to Google Docs, I was able to upload it and then modify the columns (didn't even try Excel), though it was flakey and would sometimes work, sometimes don't.

Sabean is good with trades.....and thats where it ends......Did anyone look at Zito's career he's only had one above average season, and in that season Mulder and Hudson were the 1 and 2 starters.....I don't see any significant trade being made this year....
