« Manny To Dodgers, Bay To Red Sox | Main | Odds And Ends: Giants, Maddux, Grudzielanek, Arias »
6:10pm: Just to wrap up Toronto's brief venture into the Bay sweepstakes (since it was first reported in this post)...the Jays backed out when the Pirates asked for Shaun Marcum and top prospect Travis Snider.
5:36pm: Geoff Baker has some more details on the failed deal with Toronto although he still is not sure who was offered for Ibanez. Baker has quotes from JP Ricciardi that says it was the Mariners that backed out of the deal. Baker then goes on to speculate that the aquisition of Ibanez was a marketing tool to convince the fans in Toronto that the team was still gunning for the playoffs to keep TV ratings up.
2:48pm: Jayson Stark says the Mariners had second thoughts and will likely keep Ibanez. It could've been a 2-for-1 with Major Leaguers going to Seattle.
2:34pm: Jeff Blair says talks for Ibanez are ongoing. It's even possible (though unlikely) an Ibanez trade could allow the Jays to include Adam Lind in a deal.
Blair adds that the Marlins called the Jays about Matt Stairs.
2:20pm: The Jays are left as the sole Ibanez suitor as we draw to within 40 minutes of the deadline.
1:14pm: Stark says the Jays are also eyeing Raul Ibanez. Eh? Also, Dejan Kovacevic says the Bay talks ended quickly based on the Pirates' asking price. Think Shaun Marcum and Travis Snider.
11:48am: According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Blue Jays have entered the mix for Jason Bay. Of course, the asking price will be high. But Bay is Canadian!
The Jays are 6.5 games out of the wild card, that dangerous area where a team thinks it's a contender. Bay is under contract for '09 too though.

Weird...

Wow, cool as that is, I see no point in throwing away top prospects for him.
Posted by: juiced | July 31, 2008 at 11:52 AM
i can see the jays making this trade. They need a slugger like Bay.
Posted by: Showtime35 | July 31, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Why not wait until he's a FA the following year since he said he wants to play for the Jays?
Posted by: juiced | July 31, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Yeah, I don't see the point in giving up prospects for Bay. Since we have Lind in LF who is hitting very well and we have Snider coming up so I don't know where you would put Bay.
Posted by: Jays Believer 92,93 | July 31, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Would that mean Lind or Bay DH's? I would not give up Snider tho.
Posted by: Dev0 | July 31, 2008 at 12:24 PM
J.P. COME ON~~~~
JUST SHUT UP AND WALK AWAY~~~
PLEASE...
YOU ARE TRYING TO RUIN BOTH PAST AND FUTURE OF JAYS...
WE WILL BE THE FORTH PLACE FO AL EAST ANYWAYS...

This is all BS. JP wants to boast about how he tried to get Bay etc so on and couldn't. BTW the Jays need two really good offensive players to spark the team not one. The Pirates have already agreed with the Marlin's prospects (in the Manny deal) so this is ridiculous talk!
Posted by: butchie22 | July 31, 2008 at 12:38 PM
I agree that this is BS-- though not because JP wants to boast (even I'm not that cynical).
But... why wait for Snider when you can have Bay now? Since he wants to play here, he'd be a safe bet to extend. Keeps him out of the Red Sox hands, too. I'd make that trade straight up-- but I'm sure Pittsburgh would want more.
Posted by: stoeten | July 31, 2008 at 12:56 PM
I don't think its BS and I don't think its JP. This screams Ownership and the fact that they don't want Bay coming to Rogers Centre in a Red Sox or Rays Uni. Not to mention Bay does improve the Team. A Outfield of Bay,Wells,Rios with Lind DHing a bit.
Not to mention the fact that they already said they could increase payroll if it was for a Canadian star type player.

I thought after Littlefield asking for Glaus for Jack Wilson it was said the Jays will never trade with the Pirates again.
Posted by: pghman77 | July 31, 2008 at 01:19 PM
stoeten you think Pirates would want more than Snider?
Posted by: juiced | July 31, 2008 at 01:22 PM
hahaha Snider and Marcum hahahahaha
Posted by: Dev0 | July 31, 2008 at 01:25 PM
Losing Marcum and Snider for a year an a half of Bay?
NOT worth it.
Posted by: cyberzero_jays | July 31, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Bay is good but I would go with Adam Lind because he has great potential and he is cheap. Adam Lind has been blocked for a long time so I think they should let him have a shot. I hope the Jays let him have his shot because I wouldn't want him to become one of those ruined prospects.
Posted by: manny24 | July 31, 2008 at 01:35 PM
Why are the Jays even considering moving Snider, kid is going to be a star. If only Ricciardi would have picked Tulowitzki over Ricky Romero in the '05 draft the Jays wouldn't be one of the worst offensive teams in baseball and be shopping for Bay at the deadline.

Wait so in 40 minutes no more trades can happen right?
Posted by: CUBBIES2008 | July 31, 2008 at 02:28 PM
well almost 30 now.
Posted by: CUBBIES2008 | July 31, 2008 at 02:29 PM
They aren't talking about moving Snider. It said they stopped talking when that is what the Pirates asked for.
I am very interested in this Ibanez rumor though.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Mariners fan here: I be very happy if the M's can pull off a trade and get some prospects back for Ibanez. Ibanez is a great clubhouse guy and whatever team gets him will be very happy. Why on earth are the Jays the ones rumored to trade for Ibanez? Are the Jays really acting like buyers and going to make a run for the wildcard? That seems crazy to me.
Posted by: Tanner829 | July 31, 2008 at 02:36 PM
Getting Ibanez and trading Stairs makes sense.
Getting Ibanez and trading Lind does not.
Posted by: rpriske | July 31, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Mariners fans I canlive with this trade. Lind for ibanez straight up makes a lot of sense for seattle. I don't know why toronto is buying but if they think they can win this is a fair trade.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | July 31, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Adam Lind is way better than Ibanez for every aspects except for depense.. but not by far...
If Jp trades Lind for Ibanez, He is drunk....
Posted by: stevo | July 31, 2008 at 02:46 PM
LOL trading Marcum and Snider for Jason Bay, no way. Wonder what we would do with Ibanez, since we already have our OF positions filled. Only position I can think of is DH but why not wait until the offseason to sign a better DH theres a lot of good DH's who might become free agents.
Posted by: Jays Believer 92,93 | July 31, 2008 at 02:47 PM
The Mariners = stupid.
Posted by: V | July 31, 2008 at 02:54 PM
V = vag.
Ibanez is a great guy and terrific at defense, and often times a good slugger, but is slower than snail at running. He was going to get tagged out at home from a LF assist during last night's game. Matt Stairs is a major turd, although he would be a good answer to the M's DH problems.
If the M's trade Ibanez to TBJ, I think it'd be smart to put Ich back at CF to cover the whole field (think of how he played CF when we had Wilkerson @ RF...) w/ Bloomquist at LF and Reed @ RF. Regardless if these are their actual positions, I really think these players would fit wayyyyyyyyyyy better in these spots than the current arrangement. Which, if memory serves me right, was a McLaren decision.
