« George Sherrill Rumors | Main | Nationals Plan To Non-Tender Chad Cordero »
According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are searching for a shutdown reliever. However, he says Huston Street has apparently dropped off the Mets' radar. Billy Wagner was able to pitch today, so maybe the need for relief will remain secondary.
Lennon adds that the Mets' interest in Xavier Nady has cooled, but they are still in on Casey Blake and Raul Ibanez.

Wishful thinking thinks the Mets should be honing in on Jason Bay, but I don't think they have anywhere near the kind of prospects you'd need to get a guy of his caliber.
John Neise alone isn't going to get it done, and the deal probably wouldn't be worth sacrificing what should probably be a great future for young Fernando Martinez.

Dylan Owen or Dillon Gee and one of the following Greg Veloz/ Matthew Bouchard/ Fernando Pena / should get you Casey Blake.

Mets cool on Nady = "We have zero on the farm and they're not accepting garbage".

Mets cool on Nady = Monstrously overrated OF whose asking price is ludicrous...
Posted by: Hyro | July 24, 2008 at 06:03 PM
The only thing more ludicous than Nady being overrated is an unproven prospect being overrated...
Posted by: enchinga | July 24, 2008 at 06:09 PM
If the Pirates don't take what they can get for Nady then they will continue to suck until the end of time.
Posted by: striker | July 24, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Nady is not really overated, he just is what he is. And other teams realize that there is a good chance that you can get Nady one year from today at half of what is being asked for him now. His value won't ever be higher then it is this season, and that is why nobody is biting. I don't see the Mets as ever really being interested in Nady. Omar is pretty shrewd and he knows that he can get a comparable offensive player somewhere else for much cheaper. Casey Blake and Juan Rivera for instance. Bay would be nice, but they are not trading Fernando for him. If they can get him for Niese and some other assortment of B prospects then so be it. I love the Chicagobucco guy talking smack about the Mets system, being a Pirates fan. They have had no system forever and finish in last place every year, and you have the nerve to talk about somebody elses organization? Atleast the Mets have no system because they used their pieces to get players that put them in first place, not last place.... again like you Bucs, or the worst franchise in the NL, as some people call them.

If the Mets don't make a move to improve their roster they will become the next rendition of the SF Giants ... over-aged, under-talented, over-paid... and they'll surely choke during or miss the playoffs entirely. What a poor performance from such a high paid team over the last several years.
nrmax - we had Dave Littlefield and an owner with zero interest in winning - what's your excuse?
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 06:30 PM
how many WS-rings you win from trading all those players off?
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 06:32 PM
I dont understand how anyone other then the GMs and exec's involved in trade talks know if an asking price is ludacris. had there every been a statement from those opposings GMs that said the pirates are asking for "player A" for Xavier Nady and this is way too much. The only thing that me, you, and every other fan hears is a Rival GM saying that the asking price is high. im not saying it is not high, because who knows. But who is to say that the Rival GM is just not trying to play the press and try to force a new GM to give a player away for scraps. If im neil huntigton i wouldnt trade Bay unless i got blown away by an offer, because neise and a couple of "b level prospects" arent gonna change anything. Bay is a premier talent. And with Nady, who says we NEED to trade him. we control his rights, and it would not help the future to trade him for average minor leaguers.
just my $0.02

The problem with that theory is that the heavy majority of their key players (Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Church, Santana, Maine, Pelfrey) are all 30 or younger, and under control for the foreseeable future.
The "old" players (Delgado, Alou, Pedro, El Duque, Easley) are almost all in contract years or have 1 year left (Wagner, Schoeneweis, Anderson), really the only bad contract they're stuck in for any extended period of time is Luis Castillo, and his 6.25 million/yr isn't going to keep the Mets from contending.

As for what the Mets should do, is make the trade for either Casey Blake or Raul Ibanez. They need a Corner OF as you cannot expect the combination of Tatis/Chavez/Anderson/Evans to be productive over the long haul. Neither of those guys should cost all that much. I don't think a superstar bat is necessary, just someone to compliment Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Church and the resurgent Delgado.
I don't see the Bullpen as a Major Need. Street adds nothing to the Mets that they don't already get from Sanchez, Smith and even Heilman, especially with his recent velocity problems. Fuentes would be an upgrade over Feliciano this season, but does it really make sense to play closer prices for a LOOGY? If someone like K-Rod was available, I'd feel differently, but these guys aren't what the Mets need.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | July 24, 2008 at 07:31 PM
you're right ... most of the old guys are about to move on. still, you'll have to admit that, given the payroll and hype over the last few years, they've obviously underachieved, no? Would you disagree that they'll need a roster move to be a serious contender? I'm not saying it has to be Nady but they need someone, imo.
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 07:33 PM
They underachieved in 2007-2008 until Willie got fired, yeah, they've played well under Manuel so far.
And as I said, I think they need a Corner OF, someone in the Casey Blake or Raul Ibanez price-range. They need a reliable 6 or 7 hitter, not necessairily a superstar.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | July 24, 2008 at 08:47 PM
MR. OVERRATED Xavier Nady just went two for four with another homerun today. This vastly overrated outfielder just raised his average to .330 ... no way is he worth a premier prospect to a team in the playoff hunt.
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Well, if that's all they are looking for i don't think nady's a good fit. This year he's playing like a superstar.
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 08:50 PM
I think that Ibanez will cost more than people think he will be a type A free agent and the Mariners will want decent compensation like Carp Moviel and a young high ceiling player like Cesar Puello.
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 24, 2008 at 09:39 PM
gotta love people like chicagobucco who know absolutely nothing of which they speak when it comes to another team.
let's look at the facts: xavier nady until this year has below to league average in many offensive categories. he will be 30 years old soon. he has shown to be a first half player whose numbers tend to go down in the second half. he is also perfect for what the mets need: a complementary #6 right-handed hitter with some pop whose defensive deficiencies can be hidden in left field.
huntington will have a rude awakening when he realises by keeping nady, he will be doing his best jim bowden impression by keeping his more tradeable commodities too long and end up seeing their value decrease and he can't do anything.
your team is synonymous with losing and you want to try and criticise the mets' organisation? worry about signing pedro alvarez first.

"huntington will have a rude awakening when he realises by keeping nady, he will be doing his best jim bowden impression by keeping his more tradeable commodities too long and end up seeing their value decrease and he can't do anything."
i think its a little soon to be throwing out bowden's name when talking about huntington.
and why are people getting upset when they hear huntington is trying to get the best possible value for his players? isnt that what hes supposed to do? or should he just trade them for the sake of trading them? and again...HAS ANY ONE SEEN AN OFFICIAL OFFER THAT HUNTINGTON IS ASKING FOR... i thought so, so quit ripping him until he has a track record.

I just find it difficult to appreciate someone's opinion when they cannot properly spell critisize.
This deadline will be huge for Huntington...he still has a week

I think the frustration people have we Nady is that they still view him as the platoon player he was with the Mets. Yes he has been below average in the past but the fact is he has improved offensively the last three years. I don't think this is a "career year" as a lot of people are stating. I do think it is a breakout year. Is he playing over his head as some have suggested? Maybe a little but not as much as you would think. His BABIP is a little high which would suggest that there may be a regression in his BA in the future. However, his line drive % is up and a lot of this is due to his patient approach at the plate. He has significantly improved his walk rate. Additionally, he had a new workout regimen in the preseason which has enabled him to stay relatively healthy for the first time in his career. Injuries have been the main culprit for his second half drop offs in the past and I don't believe you will see that this year. So with all this being said i can't definitely see Nady being an .850 to .900 OPS for the next few seasons. He may not be worth a teams best prospect but he's definitely worth a couple of high upside prospects. I truly believe NH will make a deal when the right one presents itself.

Slick.... you willing to take a chance on giving up your best prospects when there are guys comparable to Nady like Blake, possibly Juan Rivera, and Austin Kearns available for an undoubtedly much lesser price? You are willing to bank a Fernando Martinez or Jonathan Niese on the fact that Nady is breaking out, and not just having an above average 3 months, rather then opting for a different guy with extremely similar career numbers who will come cheaper right now?
I am not willing to take that chance. Nothing against Nady, I love him as a player and I was sad to see him leave NY the first time, but he just is not a guy you move top prospects for, plain and simple.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 24, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Speaking of Juan Rivera, I know the Angels are looking for a LHRP, what about Pedro Feliciano for Juan Rivera? I know Rivera could be worth much more then a loogy, but since he will most likely walk after the year, and the fact that the Angels have a logjam of outfielders, I wonder if they would consider it just to get a guy in that could come in handy late in the season facing guys like Ortiz, Drew, Giambi, Thome, etc. Feliciano is stuggling right now, but he has been good for 2 years, I just feel it would be worth it for the Mets, they still have Schoeneweis in the pen, and Willie Collazo seems more then ready to be a major league loogy by now. I'm not sure how the Angels or their fans would feel, but it seems sort of fair.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 24, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Admittedly so, I know little about the Mets ... other than they're consistantly picked to win the pennant and they consistently disappoint.
I've watched Nady play ball for two years... he's a model-ballplayer. Always gives his all, always runs it out, and he's really improved his splits. Yes, his BABIP is a little high and so is his line-drive rate but I think the line-drive rate is sustainable. I see him as .290 25 90 guy offensively and I love his arm in right field. His k/bb rate is acceptable too. I like Nady and I think the Muts would be lucky to have him and Minyana is just upset that he's in save-my-job mode after last year's meltdown and he can't get a guy like Nady from a rookie GM for junk.
Franz - you like bad music and you failed to display any knowledge besides a knack for poor spelling and that you know a few GMs names.
Posted by: ChicagoBucco | July 24, 2008 at 11:59 PM
I make fun of his spelling and then I misspell consistantly ... lol.
Well, you still like bad Eurotrash music Franz.

No, I don't think Nady gets your top prospects. Definitely not Fmart. I'm not as high on Niese as some others are so I could see him in a deal but I do think Niese is more important to the Mets than Nady. Especially, and you made this point, when there are other bats out there that will help out the Mets this year. I don't think Nady is the best fit for the Mets and if I'm Minaya I pass on Nady. I could see him as a better fit in Tampa though, bringing back a Niemann and another high upside prospect. I like Nady but I don't see him getting us three players as has been rumored but I do think two players with one of those players being a pretty good prospect. Not elite, but really good. I think Niemann fits in nicely there.
BTW, it is painful trying to post on this website!

When have the Mets ever been picked to win a pennant? This is the only year of my life that I can remember the majority of people calling the Mets the favorite to go to the World Series. They have never been the favorite to win a pennant before, unless you go back like 20 years. And buying high on Nady right now would only give management more reason to throw the axe down on Minaya if they were looking for a reason to do so, which they absolutely, without a doubt, are not looking to do.
I am not that high on Niese either Slick, I think he is an intriguing arm, but I am not ready to call him a sure thing ML pitcher yet either. But a lefty with good stuff is always nice to have in the system, plus, he is the best the Mets have so they would be better off just going after Casey Blake who should cost a lot less, and still fill the need the Mets are looking to fill.
And yes, Typekey is just horrendous. It has always been awful, but it seems to get worse and worse every week. I log in, type in my post, click the post button, and am forced to login again. If anything was going to drive people away from this site, I think it would be Typekey, much moreso then the White on Black font, not to start that up again.

Really ... every year the Mets are supposed to be one of the NL "powerhouses".
After they got Santana, I remember everybody picked either them or the Cubs to make the Series.
I agree with your statements on the Pirates, CB. I wish more people could be fair about what they want for their players. It amazes me to keep reading these "WHO DO THE PIRATES THINK THEY ARE?" type posts because they won't take two fungo bats and a used jock for Bay or Nady.
And Marte would've looked real good in a Mets uniform the other night when they blew that Phils game. I hope those AA pitchers they think are going to be 20 game winners in 4 years are worth it if they don't make the playoffs this year.
Posted by: cactusbix | July 25, 2008 at 06:36 AM
Marte would help in the bullpen but we already have 2 lefties not including Wagner and to give up a good prospect would not be worth it.
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 25, 2008 at 06:49 AM
I hope the Mets go out and get a Rivera or Ibanez type. Lets see what those teams will ask for their guys. I can already hear the Mets fans, "but they won't trade them to us for our magic bag o, beans".
Posted by: enchinga | July 25, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Really, then how come every GM is complaining about the Pirates and how they are acting? You think they are all out of line? Casey Blake can be had for a Dillon Gee type of prospect, maybe some other guy. And that is fine, that is what Xavier Nady should be worth, he has been a so-so player every year, and now he has a nice couple of months and the stupid pirates want to sell him off as some sort of superstar. Maybe that is why their a last place team every year and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Posted by: nrmax88 | July 25, 2008 at 01:50 PM
And if you really think the Mets are picked as a "Powerhouse" every year, you must be watching some other sport with some other team called the Mets. 2008 is the first time in my life they have been picked to win anything but the majority of people who do these things. The were a dreadful team through the 90's until 98, but even in 98, 99, and 00, they were never some sort of pre-season favorite to win something. They were horrible from 01 to 04, started to improve a bit in 05, shocked the world in 06, and collapsed in 07. But even in 07, everybody that I saw picked Atlanta to win the division. Up until this year, the Mets have never been a pre-season favorite to win anything.

Yes, you are right, they should have paid a ridiculous price for Marte, just so they could have him close for one game when Billy wagner was not available. Awesome idea.
