Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes about the Mets' unsuccessful search for a corner outfielder.
The Mets find the prospect price too high on players such as Raul Ibanez and Jason Bay. They don't seem to care for Adam Dunn or Brian Giles. They don't like Randy Winn's contract or lack of power. And Manny Ramirez is unlikely for numerous reasons.
While the Mets are fans of Ibanez, they've made all of their interesting prospects untouchable. The Mets may prefer to use some of those prospects in offseason deals. For now they will stick with the red-hot Fernando Tatis and other internal options.

They should at least look into what the Reds want for Adam Dunn.
A plus .900 slugging would be grand. If you don't resign Dunn you get two draft picks. I just don't get it.

I wouldn't change about their club right now. They look good.

If Ibanez is so expensive (wtf seattle, keeping him for that upcoming stretch run?) then just keep Tatis in LF. His defense is improving every day, its not nearly as bad as watching Marlon Anderson. Tatis is clutch, hits for power, is right handed, and is well liked in the clubhouse. Could be this year's Jose Valentin.
The Mets just Ryan Church back, and I believe he resumes Baseball activities this weekend

If the Mets are in such a need for an outfielder, why isn't Jay Payton an option? This is the last year of his contract, he still has okay power, great speed, and can play all three outfield spots. He never seems to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Mets these days and I don't understand why.

I assume no one wants Dunn cause of the asking price, which has been said to be 1 top tier prospect and one mid-level prospect.

haha. Seattle is out of it so we should just ship out any of our decent players for nothing because of it? If the Mets don't want to offer anything of quality we will just take the two picks when Ibanez likely opts for a multi-year deal.
Hey, we're out of it so how about Felix Hernandez, Ichiro, and Ibanez for Delgado and Heilman.

"If nothing is broken, don't fix it." You know the old baseball saying, they are fine right now and should keep the team the way they are!

Here is how I look at the Mets at this upcoming deadline. I would like to bring in a corner outfielder, but I do not feel it is a must do. What Fernando Tatis has done is allow Omar Minaya, like he did with Minnesota, to call somebody's bluff, and not overpay. He can offer what he wants and stick to it, because he has Tatis as his fallback option. This guy has been absolutely smoking, and I am starting to wonder just a little bit, maybe this guy is the real deal? Now, I am not expecting him to hit .310 and stay this hot all year, but I wonder if there is a chance that he regained some of his old form. He is starting to make me a believer that he can hold down LF for the rest of 08. As for the pen, I have heard rumors about Fuentes, Street, and Sherrill. Since the Mets already have a closer, the way I look at it is I would not give up any value whatsoever to add another bullpen arm. None. Maybe a couple B or C minor leaguers, but that is it. The Mets pen is by no means amazing, but it is not horrible, and when you look around the NL, most of the other contenders have somewhat questionable bullpens also. Only the Phillies bullpen has been fantastic, but they are due to regress a bit.
Maybe the Mets could even find some help internally from a guy like Kunz or Parnell, who I know is a starter but is throwing very hard from what I hear. With the way their farm is right now, I just do not see the sense in trading and of the top 5 or so guys you have for a relief pitcher that will not close. Huston Street will cost a ton, and his velocity scares me a bit, and with Fuentes and Sherrill, no thank you, the Mets don't need to pay a closers price for a guy they will use in the 6th/7th inning as a loogy. There are also some arms that may become available in august, similar to how they brought in Guillermo Mota in 2006. And of course, you also worry that if you give up too much for a relief pitcher they will go Eric Gagne on you and then you just gave away prospects for nothing. While Eric Gagne's circumstances may have been extreme, non-closer relief pitchers probably have the highest fluctuation in the performances from year to year out of any kind of athlete, so they are just not the kind of players that I would want to go trading away prospects for in an already weak farm system.

coolpapabell,
Do you know WHY the Mets have no interest in Dunn? Because Wayne Krivsky, the General Manager the Reds fired in April, is now a Special Assistant in the Mets Front Office.
I TRULY think that Krivsky was fired because he disagreed with Owner Bob Ca$htellini about bringing Dunn back for the 2008 season. Ca$hetllini has a man-crush on Dunn and doesn't see his MANY deficiancies.
Krivsky was in the Twins organization and believes in the "Pitching and Defense wins championships" philosophy and Dunn provides neither to the Reds.
Krivsky also believes in the "small market" model of getting rid of high priced veterans for younger talent, either via trades or letting them become Free Agents and getting the Draft Picks. Keeping Dunn was NOT in that philosophy.
So, the Owner and GM disagreed and teh GM ultimately lost his job for it.
If Ca$htellini wants to put a winner on the field, he is going to HAVE to realize Adam Dunn isn't what the team needs.
If Ca$htellini is keeping Dunn around as a curative for his erectile dysfunction, then someone needs to tell him that Viagra has been invented, works and is a heck of a lot less expensive than Adam Dunn.....

I don't think the Mets need for an outfielder is really that dire anymore. I'd have absolutely no problem moving forward with an OF of Beltran, Church, Tatis with Chavez as a possible defensive replacement late in games.

Look I'm not buyingt the Mets right now unlike everybody else. They need an outfielder. Really, how long do you think Tatis and Delgado are goin to be this hot. Idon't see it down the road. I picked the Phillies in the beginning and im sticking with them.

Okay.. why all the Dunn hate? I know he's not the best defensive player, but this year he has actually done a C- kind of job out there. And why is he not worth a top prospect? Is an average of 40 homers, 100 walks, 100 runs, 100 rbis not good enough for a top (unproven) player and a lower level prospect? Yes, we know about the K's but I would take those. I just don't get the Dunn hate. Also, if he gets to go to an American League team and is a DH, he can just focus on hitting monster shots. And, guess what? No 'roids! :)

That is like me saying I don't buy the Yankees. How long is Jason Giambi and Mike Mussina are going to stay this hott? How long can they survive with Moose, Rasner and Ponson? The Mets have without a doubt, positively, by far, not even close, the best rotation in their division. They will be okay.

I wouldn't trade Fernando Martinez or even one of our B prospects for a temporary solution such as Raul Ibanez. The Mets' farm system is depleted as it is, and it would make no sense to jeopardize the team's current hot streak to bring in a player that may not fit into the team's current scheme of things.
To be honest, Ibanez reminds me of the Shawn Green deal a couple years ago, only Ibanez is a slightly better player than Green was a few years ago and it would cost the Mets a lot more.
If the Giants only want a decent prospect and perhaps cash for Randy Winn, then I would want the Mets to go that way. I believe Winn could help this team in either right or left field. The Mariners seem to be playing hardball with teams interested in their players, and I don't think the Mets should bite on Ibanez.

Why not Jeff Francoeur from the Braves? They've been having their issues ever since the Braves demoted him. I think he would be a good fit, good hitter, great arm, still very young.

Well Mussina is good for the whole year and giambi has been cold this month. Now the Mets rotation is good, i'll admit, but Pedro is done though. Maine, Pelfrey, and Santanna are solid. Perez picks his day to be good. Now their bullpen sucks really bad. As for Rasner he's good as long Moeller is catching. Ponson will be replaced with hughes/Kennedy.

I'm just gonna throw this out there: even into January, all of the major media outlets and writers said that the "Mets Unlikely to Acquire an Ace." Anything can happen, ladies and gentlemen.
