"The contending Cardinals might even consider parting with top outfield prospect Colby Rasmus, a major surprise. If so, it may put them in line to land Pittsburgh's Xavier Nady, or even Jason Bay"
No way trade him for Nady, if we get an outfielder it better be a masher like Matt Holliday or at second Bay.
With that said, I doubt Rasmus will be traded.

It takes two to tango, and I doubt either team would make those trades.

No way is Rasmus traded for Nady. If they are considering dealing him it would have to be Bay (if the Pirates were involved). If that happened I would expect it to be a package deal including Marte with Reyes and perhaps Garcia coming back to the Bucs. This seems unlikely to me though.

In what parallel universe do the Marlins trade Uggla? Despite his poor All-Star showing, he's still one of the top three players in his position in baseball.
I read Zriebec's column. If he's saying that the Orioles won't trade *anyone*, then we're only moderately better than we were last year at this time. The rotation is days away from a total collapse, and the O's are headed for a 5-20 tailspin, so MacPhail needs to move the movable parts ASAP.

Bay is better than Holliday - Coors. Nady's combination of offense and defense may win out too, and he would come a lot cheaper.

Dandy Andy does not do anything ASAP. I hope for O's fans sake he makes your club better and makes some good moves. The trades over the winter were obvious moves everyone knew he would make. I do not have much faith in his speedy attack mode.

Joelcards,
I agree we need to move an outfielder(or two Duncan?Barton?) for pitching(bullpen) and middle infield. Someone to bat behind Albert for a little protection. But who? You say Uggla, but doubt that will happen.

Would you Cards fans trade Rasmus for Abreu if the Yanks took on a lot of Abreu's contract?
Posted by: daneptizl | July 16, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Why would the Cards want Abreu - even if he was free? Giving up Rasmus for him makes zero sense to me.
Posted by: bjsguess | July 16, 2008 at 11:08 PM
danepyzl, I wouldn't do it if you took on his whole contract and gave us money.
Posted by: trooper2 | July 16, 2008 at 11:14 PM
do the cards need hitting or pitching? When the Cubs play them, i think the cards have a lot of talent in the out-field. I think ya'll might need pitching, but the question is: onther then A.J. is there anybody else?
Posted by: cubs land | July 16, 2008 at 11:31 PM
cubs_land, I think your mostly right. However, many people seem to forget the fact that we have Troy Glaus, who used to be that Holliday/Bay type hitter everyone keeps saying we're after. I think AJ Burnett would be a great fit for us and Dave Duncan. He was close to deal with us before he signed with Toronto. Who knows what Jays asking price will be? I don't see us giving up Colby Rasmus for anything less than a Bay and Marte deal or a Holliday and Fuentes deal, however my name isn't followed by a G.M. I'll be anxious to see how Mo reacts as we approach the trade deadline. I just hope the we do something rather it be bolstering the bullpen, adding a front line starter, or a major bat.

Rasmus isn't going anywhere. In the P-D's recent interview with Dewitt Jr., the Cards' owner...
"P-D: Is there a chance that Rasmus could play his first major-league game in another uniform?
BDJ: I don't anticipate that. No."

If the Pirates would send Nady with Jack Wilson. They could land a Rasmus type prospect. The Pirates should still try to pry Matt Kemp away from the Dodgers in a Jack Wilson deal, however if that falls through, they should consider trying to get Rasmus in a Bay or Nady deal. The Pirates have no big name prospects reaching the majors anytime soon with the exception of Andrew McCutchen. They need another big name prospect in their system.

If the Cardinals traded Rasmus for Abreu, I'd go on a killing spree.
Heyman's a moron. This isn't going to happen.
Posted by: plh903 | July 17, 2008 at 07:57 AM
I doubt Rasmus is going anywhere unless he is bringing in a serious hitter AKA Holliday, or Bay. I think that the emergence of Ludwick obviously made Colby more attainable.
Pablo Ozuna from everything I remember used to be a pretty solid bench bat for the Chi Sox.
WOoO international draft WOoO

I don't think Barton can be traded unless the Cardinals pay his former team for his contract. I think its something like that. I know that if they take him off the 40 man roster they have to offer him back to his former team anyone know what team that is?
Posted by: manny24 | July 17, 2008 at 09:04 AM
His former is the Indians. This information can be found at First Inning, Baseball Reference, Baseball Cube, and other web sites.
He has to be kept on the 25-man roster. If he's traded he has to be kept on that team's 25-man roster.
Bill DeWitt and Bernie Miklasz have said Colby isn't going anywhere in the last 24 hours.

No way Florida does the deal for Uggla.
They traded Miggy and Willis because of the cost required to retain them both. Uggla is still playing for the minimum. Florida can fit him in their payroll.
Rasmus is going to be very good but he is still unproven. Rasmus for Bay isn't an awful move at this point if the Cards are delusional enough to think they can win this year.
Their much better play would be to sit tight and gear up for 09.

AA- "bay is better than holliday-coors" what? Holliday away does drop but he's still battin .301 wit an obp of .400 an is just way more talented than bay
bay btw sucks on the road his numbers drASTically drop away from PNC and he can always lay an egg like last year-ops of .745 and holliday is 2 years younger

OK, McPhail is finally realizing that the O's can't contend in the AL East on sheer 'gutsiness.' 'Bout time. Now, let's see some deals. Me? I'd look at:
1. Ramon Hernandez and Chorye Spoone to Florida for Logan Morrison, Greg Burns, and Kyle Winters. Morrison is an intriguing prospect and Hernandez alone wouldn't be enough to get him, but Spoone, a solid SP prospect added to the mix could be. We've got plenty of young pitchers, but position prospects are sparse.
2. Daniel Cabrera and George Sherrill to PHI for Adrian Cardenas, Kyle Drabek, Heitor Correa, and a PTBNL. Phils get a durable SP to bolster the rotation and the lefty reliever they've been looking for. O's get a couple intriguing, if inexperienced arms and a legit prospect in Cardenas who could potentially be the heir to Roberts at second
3. Aubrey Huff and Chad Bradford to TB for Reid Brignac, Mitch Talbot, and Nick Barnese. The Rays get a versatile masher and BP help, the O's maybe get their SS of the future and an arm in Talbot, who could fill in the rotation this year and move to middle relief in time.
4. Jeremy Guthrie and Jamie Walker to LAD for James McDonald, Andrew Lambo, and filler. Guthrie is one of the most underrated starters in baseball and could instantly help the Dodgers rotation; Walker bolsters the 'pen during Saito's absence; the O's pick up a stud pitching prospect in McDonald and an interesting hitter in Lambo.
BRob to Cleveland for Wes Hodges, Kelvin de la Cruz, and Asdrubal Cabrera. Indians look to contending in '09 with Roberts at second, O's get a ready-now middle infielder in Cabrera and their third baseman of the future in Hodges, with de la Cruz an intriguing lefty arm.
What do you think? I did this pretty fast, so cut me some slack.

milehigh, I was going right along with you, even though you've got an awful lot of "maybe"s coming back. That was until you traded away Guthrie. He's one of the five people in the system I wouldn't trade under any circumstances right now (Markakis, Jones, Wieters, Arrieta since I know someone would ask). I agree that the players you mentioned outside of Guthrie should be shopped, but there are too many guys who are "intriguing" or "interesting" coming back for my taste. I'm tired of quantity. It's like throwing mud against a hole in the the wall and hoping some sticks. I'd rather get one good plug and fix the hole for good.
