Pettitte To Pitch In '09?

From Buster Olney's blog today:

Heard this: Andy Pettitte may well pitch another season, in 2009.

Pettitte, 36, has a 3.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Yankees this year.  He's well-compensated at $16MM.  About a month ago, Pettitte said it would be "a joy and an honor" to pitch at the new Yankee Stadium.

I don't doubt he'll play another season with the Yankees, but you know there's going to be constant speculation on whether or not the Astros are going to go after him...

Andy should return for another season. He's still one of the more consistent SP in the AL...I don't think he'd consider playing for Houston again or any other team. He seems very happy to be back in NY. That said, if he doesn't pitch well in September (or October, if the Yanks get that far), Big Hank might not want him back.

A better question is if Mussina is coming back for another season, and what teams would he consider pitching for.

The Yankees pitching could be looking far prettier next year.

Chien Ming Wang
C.C. Sabathia/Ben Sheets
Andy Pettitte
Joba Chamberlain
Phil Hughes

Pretty good. With Brackman, Betances, Cole, Kennedy, Horne, Marquez, etc. that is a team in awesome shape pitching-wise, with or without Pettitte.

"that is a team in awesome shape pitching-wise, with or without Pettitte."

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Could of sworn I read the same thing 11/07.

Sure was fun watching him pitch tonight.

I think it was about $2 million that kept Drayton from keeping Andy in an Astros uniform.

This led to the trade for Jason Jennings, which created a hole in center field, which led to the trade for Michael Bourn, which created a hole at closer, which led to the trade for Jose Valverde. Not keeping Andy is the source of the Astros misery.

Its either that or all the piss poor drafts, I cant decide.

Enough with this Pettitte retirement drama every year. Outside of Yankee fans, who cares? Does he think there will be some big ceremony and a bunch of crying people in the streets if he retires? He is a number 3 starter, accused of doing steroids and injury is always a concern. He is not anything special to do this crap every year. Does he think he is Brett Favre or something?
