White Sox Looking For Pitching

According to CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler, the White Sox are hunting for pitching of both the starting and relieving variety.

Based on previous reports, GM Kenny Williams is eyeing Oakland's Huston Street and Washington's Jon Rauch.  With the success of southpaws Matt Thornton and Boone Logan, it appears that Williams is focused on right-handers.  Most of the top available names aside from Street and Rauch are lefties, unless you're a David Weathers fan.

With Jose Contreras on the DL with elbow tendinitis, the Sox also may explore the starting pitching market.  So far they've only been linked in published reports to Freddy Garcia, and that was before the Contreras injury.  Plus, Ozzie Guillen doesn't seem terribly optimistic on Garcia.  The best available starters are probably Justin Duchscherer and A.J. BurnettKnobler says more than a dozen scouts watched Burnett's last start.

I doubt the Sox have the prospects to net both a top closer like Street or Rauch, and then get a top starter like Duke or Burnett.

The Sox don't have the prospects for any fo those players unless they give up Josh Fields. Fields could easily bring in either Street or Duke. I don't understand why though. Contreres goes on the DL, he'll be back. They have 3 great pitchers and 2 OK ones. The bullpen is amoung the top in the MLB. If the Sox trade Fields for one of those players, they'd be stupid unless they resign Crede, which I doubt they will.

I wouldn't be shocked if KW thought about moving Fields. Remember when Soriano was with Washington and KW almost got him for a package surrounding around Brandon McCarthy, at a time when most considered McCarthy untouchable? I mean this seems like a pretty good chance for the Sox to pounce on this division, so I wouldn't be shocked.

I'm sure that Beane or Ricciardi would love to get Fields, neither team has a long term 3B. They could just have him play in left and DH some and give Rolen/Chavez rest until given the full time 3B job.

It'd probably end up being Fields straight up for Burnett, I wouldnt consider him to be worth any more than that.

Don't read on if you are incredibly young or immature-

I have a question about a nickname. Seeing as Duscherer's name is pronounced Doosh-er-er, shouldnt his nickname be doosh or dush, not duke?

Who knows though, KW might be trying to move some position players, Crede or Paulie. They need to get Swish out of center, he is awful, he has no concept of throwing through the cut-off man. The BA/Wise platoon was outstanding.

I would love to see the sox net another promising younger pitcher in Duchscherer.

Scribbletone,

In 2006 when Soriano was avalable the White Sox needed a leadoff man. In 2008 when Burnett and Duchscherer are avalable, the White Sox don't need starting pitching. Plus, McCarthy was blocked. Remember they had to trade Freddy Garcia to open up a spot for him. So the Sox could've had the same rotation for '06 in '07. The Sox need Fields for '09, though. They are different situations.

"have a question about a nickname. Seeing as Duscherer's name is pronounced Doosh-er-er, shouldnt his nickname be doosh or dush, not duke?"

Uhh his name isn't pronounced "doosh-er-er". It's pronounced as "DUKE-sure". He's called Duke because it's right in his name. Simply an innocent mistake on your part.

And I would LOVE (!) to see the White Sox move Konerko and put Swish at first. If they could move Paulie and land a decent OF prospect and pitching prospect, I wish they would. Swisher belongs at a corner position, and I just think the Sox need to get younger.

DREAM~~

The White Sox trade Josh Fields, Lance Broadway and a low level prospect for Brian Roberts. The Sox then move Konerko for whatever they can possibly get for him. Say to the Angels for Jordan Walden or something. Then the Sox could move Swish to first, Alexei to center, and put Roberts in at second. And bam, the offense just got scarier.

2B Roberts
SS Cabrera
LF Quentin
DH Thome
RF Dye
3B Crede
1B Swisher
C Pierzynski
CF Ramirez

Obviously though the Sox should persue pitching rather than offense, I think they'll be fine with that.

"I have a question about a nickname. Seeing as Duscherer's name is pronounced Doosh-er-er, shouldnt his nickname be doosh or dush, not duke?"

It's pronounced DUKE-sure.

Man Sox fans you are delusional if you think Josh Fields is gonna net you the majors ERA leader! He might be the center of a package, but him alone is not gonna be enough.

I would argue that the White Sox need starting pitching right now just as much as they needed Soriano back in '06. In both cases they are great teams without a defined flaw. I mean its not like Podsednik was godawful in '06, he had a .330 OBP and 40 steals. He was mediocre. And its not like Soriano is actually a leadoff hitter.

I dont know I guess I saw some similarities because in neither situation do the Sox necessarily HAVE to do something, but rather they are just going for it.

Ari, we've had this fight before, it would be a larger package for Duke.

@AriGoldisaG

Especially since Fields kind of isn't very good right now. He isn't hitting for much power and he's still striking out once every three at-bats. In Triple-A, mind you. Plus, his defense is suspect and he turns 26 in December. Enticed yet?

AriGold,

You are correct, Fields alone probably wouldn't net the "Duke," But that is exactly why KW should not trade for him. He is a 31 year old career bullpen guy, who is in his first season as a starter. I don't think he'll keep it up, and probably suffer in the 2nd half of the season. If he doesn't, great, but it's a red flag in my eyes. I could see the Sox trading Fields, but not for Duke. He might for Street though.

On a side note, I think they need to either move Konerko or Thome, or platoon them at DH. Neither one is doing anything, and the team seemed to play a lot better with Swish at 1st and the platoon of Anderson/Wise in CF. Ozzie said he would bench Konerko if he didn't start to hit, but I hope he doesn't wait a month to find out. Plus platooning those Konerko and Thome would play well with letting Thome go after the year. He only has to get so many plate appearances for his option to kick in, and if he is the main DH the rest of the way he'll get it. He definitely needs to be gone next year if Konerko is still here.

You think the Sox would be interested in Jeff Suppan or Seth McClung? Dave Bush perhaps?

Rype-
You hit on the nose when you say that Duke will not hold up.

The upside to street is phenomenal, but he's hurt way too much. The sox need to look younger, but not oft-injured younger.

Who in the world is a Dave Weathers fan? Just the idea seems absurd on it's face.

I do not want John Rauch back. I was in attendance at the last game he pitched for the Sox as a starter when he got shelled, then left the park before the game ended. Kenny Williams was irate. Now they may give up a top prospect for him?? No way. Go after a mid-level starter like Burnett and deal Konerko for whatever you can get, if anything.

How about Orlando Cabrera and cash for Angel Berroa, Jason Johnson and Jon Meloan? Lets the Dodgers get the SS they need and brings the Sox 2 pitchers, one young and fire throwing and one who can step in and be the 5th starter.

"Swisher belongs at a corner position"

If you mean infield corner, he can only play at one, unless the White Sox plan on having a left-handed third baseman.
