Yankees To Sign Richie Sexson

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Yankees reached a tentative agreement with first baseman Richie Sexson.  The idea is that Sexson will improve the team's performance against left-handed pitching.

There's little risk, so you can't blame Brian Cashman for the move.  However, it should be noted that Sexson didn't hit lefties much in 2006-07 and only faced them 70 times this year.

By the way, the Yankees aren't interested in Barry Bonds.

A-Rod has to love it. Now they can boo someone else.

lmao studio ya if u watched this guy hit lately he pretty much just goes up, closes his eyes an swings, hopin for the best

I never realized Sexson was a masochist!

five steps on how the Mariners poisoned the Yankees' Organization:

1) Steal Jay Buhner

2) Let whiny and salary heavy Alex Rodriguez sign w/ NY

3) Steal away Mel Stoudemeier

4) Release Richie Sexson (and lefty slugger) so that the only team desparately in need of that style-of-player, NYY, signs him. Have fun with that BTW ;-) ;-)

5) Trade the aging Raul Ibanez for Yankees prospect, only for Raul to come back to the Mariners after his contract.

Hahahaha. man don't we all hate the Yankees?

Yes, I CAN blame Brian Cashman for the move. What the hell is he trying to do, play it safe and adhere to the trend amongst the league to collude against Bonds? I thought the Yankees wanted to win this year. To me, this is Cashman's way of throwing in the towel. I have nothing against Sexson and I think he should be playing somewhere, but the Yankees aren't a fit. They could have signed Bonds for extremely cheap and really made some noise this second half. Bonds could've protected A-Rod, got on base, and scored some runs. I'm very disappointed in the Yankees. The Yankees WILL NOT win the wild card and they certainly WILL NOT win the division.

Bonds doesn't factor in here (although I'd certainly take him). Doesn't play 1B and even if he did, he hits lefty as well. Sexson will just work as the other side of the platoon; basically just hoping for a more productive Shelley Duncan. Which isn't asking much.

And 116:
1. Yes. Great trade. No argument. (This will not be a trend)
2. That's really worked out well for you guys, huh. LMAO, look at all those wins and MVPs!!! Good one.
3. (sp) to the point where I wonder if there's a literary (ssp) with "super" in front of it for the really terrible attempts.
4. Sure. You guys keep paying him, though, ok? Thanks.
5. Ummm ... what?

I had posted a link here to a story saying the Yankees are on the verge of signing Bonds but it was taken down because Tim has "never heard of the site or the author." I would try to post it again, but I imagine it will just get yanked again. For those who care to read it, it's at MLBNewsonline.com.

Everyone needs to settle down here. They signed the guy for turkey sandwich. If he happens to go back to being Richie Sexson...and remember, he IS only 33 and DID hit 40+ homers a few times....they got a steal. If he continues to stink, they will release him in a few weeks. If he is somewhere in between....I'm sure he'll be a better bat off the bench than Bettemit....and a better 1B defensively. This is NOT the answer....just a tryout virtually for free.

Shouldn't the Yankees be a bit more worried about the fact that their fourth and fifth starters are Sidney Ponson and Darrell Rasner? Good thing they held on to Hughes, Cabrera and Kennedy when the Twins wanted them for Johan. How could he possibly displace El Sid or Raz in the rotation? I'd say the move to add Sexson shows the Bronx Bombers are nervous that their clumsy mustachioed greaseball has a "parasite" again.

116:
1) bad trade by yankees - agreed. But the trade went down in 1988 and buhner retired in 2001. In those years Seattle "poisoned" the yankee organization so badly that Yanks only won 4 WS in 6 attempts. Seattle has been to the WS how many times? In fact you could make the arguement that by never trading Buhner they never get O'neill and perhaps never even goto WS in 90's. Great job of destroying the yankees on that one
2) Seattle didn't "let" NY sign Arod - Texas signed him - Yankees traded for him way to know the facts.
3) learn to spell - that can't even be a typo unless your typing with a crayon in your ass during a seizure.
4) You think Seattle released Sexson so that he could screw up the yankees? What if he chose to not sign anywhere - then what was the master plan for releasing him?
5) totally lost me - I think you got your fantasy league confused with reality
I'm thinking your favorite number should is 420 not 116

Not Joe Morgan:

1) Great Trade, you're right. even Seinfeld calls out the yankees on that

2)I dont know if you want to admit or not, but Alex Rodriguez really sucks for a player who puts up those numbers. And A-Rod has a harder time getting through the playoffs than George Karl.

Personally, I think A-Rod was much better as a raw-talent player than a turd-in-a-punch-bowl as he is currently known now.

3) Yeah it must be a stupid decision to sign on one of the most experienced pitching coaches in all of baseball. Its not Mel's fault Bedard's a wimp and Miguel Batista enjoys balls for a living. Blame that on them and last year's upper management.

4) Who cares if we're paying Richie Sexson a little cash still? At least that clown is gone and now on the Yankees. Snaps, I'd pay for the Yankees to continue sucking too.

5) I commented about Ibanez before I noticed the Yanks were about to sign Bonds (desparation is a stinky cologne...). Either way the Yanks replace Matsui with a less than perfect player.

Heres to the team that started and help end baseball in less than a century! Go Yanks!

116 - you related to baseball guru by any chance?

Touchmymonkey, regardless of the # in front of my alias, isn't yours about masturbation??? I think your comment may have backfired.

And FYI, no matter what I grew up loving baseball for baseball. Although I do share my joys of baseball heros (Puckett, O'Neil, Carter, Davis, Griffey, Martinez, etc...) I would much rather see my team play to the fullest of their extent and make the game fun as a team than watch a bunch of pre/post-Madonnas--wow, I am educated--only play for millions and millions upon millions of dollars and barely follow through once they get to October.

My comment didn't backfire at all - doesn't take Einstein to figure out my ID.

or a rally monkey at that...

no, i have gotten the impression baseball_guru is a chump to you all, but im not of relation. it is funny you'd point that out.

as you may have noticed, i'm not a scout/blogger as most of you seem to be. i'm just a fan who is too busy watching his hometeam piddle away a once promising season to watch other teams suck at the same time. if i'm wrong on a fact call me out on it. better smart than sorry, right?

116 is definitely Baseball Guru.

Too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.

Where in the linked article does this say that the Yankees aren't interested in Bonds?

No problem with this deal. Sexson is a bench player. Theres no issue with him playing 1B against LHP. Ideal Yankee lineup:

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Bonds DH
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Abreu RF
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF

vs LHP:

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Bonds DH
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Abreu RF
Sexson 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF

Tim states Yanks not interested in Bonds and in same sentence is a link to an article that doesn't even mention Bonds name! WTF??? Personally I hope they sign Bonds. It will cost them nothing and might just be the difference between them making the playoffs. And to those who say they don't want the circus that Bonds would create, it's already a circus filled with a bunch of ova tha hill "stars".

As jjyankeesfan2 said, this is a low risk/high reward move for the Yanks -- not a bad idea. It does seem like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit though. That said, as a Sox fan, I can't wait to see Sexson in there during a clutch moment in the 9th against Papelbon. He may just strike him out twice in one AB.

Nice signing by the Yankees. Sexson's average season is .261/37/116, but he has been struggling the last season and a half. If he can regain his swing, he will add some needed right-handed pop to the Yankees lineup.

I still don't understand how you can take a series of events, most of which have little/no correlation to both clubs and call them how the Ms poisoned the yankees. I'm sure all yankees fans will let arod suck as much as he wants if he keeps putting up those numbers. Mel Stoudamire chose to leave the yankees. Him going to the mariners has no affect on the yankees other than they signed a former ny coach. Btw, great job hes done with the Mariners starting rotationa and bp. Paying a prorated league minimum for a former allstar to be a situational hitter sounds like a win to me. You must be getting your info from a garbage site if you think the yankees are signing Bonds or trading for ibanez. not to mention your getting way ahead of yourself when you say he's resigning with the Mariners. As for Arods playoff disasters, I wish the Os had a guy who could carry them on his back to the playoffs every year, even if they had to bench him when they got there.

You're all dumb, like i would go on MLBTR and actually mean the quaint little Seattle Mariners, since conception, have been conspiring to ruin the Yankees. you guys are morons worse than whatever calling me "Baseball_guru" means to you.

I just hate the Yankees with a passion, that's all. They are every that is wrong with baseball right now. NYY already have smug Damon, had dealt with roided Jason Goomba, watched Gay-Rod use his wooden bat on Madonna (for god's sakes) more than at bat, and NY would have been better off signing a windmill than "Kitchie" Sexson if they're looking for alternative power. The words "strike three" will never sound so right in Yankee Stadium until Richie's up. Just because the guy had like ONE 40-HR season when he was younger doesn't make him the answer to the Yank Stank.

And, in all honesty, the Yankees would be stupid not to look at Ibanez. They N-E-E-D, not necessarily want, someone Ibanez that to fulfill for Matsui. The Mariners already have 20 young OFs ready to replace Ibanez, yet the only thing keeping him in Seattle are the RBIs (which are almost always set up by Ichiro singles and Lopez doubles) and his professionalism. New York could use a little class right about now, dont'cha think? One more thing about the M's LF, he did just about exactly what I had said he might do again only a couple years ago (move on out/come right back). What makes you believe its not at all possible he could repeat, even with age in the equation?

Whoa, LetsGoCheerios, you're in love with A-Rod. Who are you, Derek Jeter?

sorry for extra posting everyone.

*some like Ibanez to fulfill...

*addition* Mel S. (apparently I cant spell his name, lol) was a smart pickup. Cheerios, contrary to popular belief, Mariners pitching isn't that bad. Given it wasn't what everyone expected and the entire rotation is incomplete at best, but given Hernandez/Bedard/and even throw Silva's and Washburn's attempts in there and it isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Bedard is pitching injured on the worst slugging team in baseball and still is 6-4. Hernandez has 6W and million strike outs (only D.Gooden beat him for his age). Silva has thrown some great games, but is not worth what we pay. Finally, Washburn is about to be traded for his skills.
