9:15pm: MLB.com's Bill Ladson thinks the Nats will keep Belliard, because they're in a bind at shortstop due to injuries.
FRIDAY, 7:57am: MLB.com's Bill Ladson says Jim Bowden and Ned Colletti have not spoken this week. Ken Rosenthal believes the Dodgers are interested in Belliard, and says he did not clear waivers. Dylan Hernandez says the Dodgers made the claim on Belliard to block the D'Backs, but Rosenthal does not agree.
THURSDAY, 11:26pm: According to Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News, the Dodgers won a waiver claim on Nationals infielder Ron Belliard. The two teams are discussing a trade.
Belliard, 33, is hitting .237/.340/.442 in 259 plate appearances. He's played first, second, and third base this year for the Nats. Belliard is owed another $395K this year plus $1.9MM in '09. With Casey Blake in the fold and Nomar Garciaparra off the DL, Belliard makes less sense for the Dodgers than he did in July. Still, he could be a cheap second baseman for '09 if Jeff Kent retires.

It's Ronnie Belliard, not Ron. That's his name. And unless the Nats get a prospect or two from the Dodgers, they shouldn't trade him. He's a very valuable 2B/ utility guy with quite a bit of pop and he is signed cheaply.

A prospect or two? Belliard is just a decent bench player.

This would make sense for the Dodgers if they're thinking about a cheap replacement for Kent next season. Then they could focus on re-signing Manny or CC Sabbathia.
For now, it would make more sense to focus on a starter to replace Penny.

What?! What about Berroa and Ozuna? Why even pay a million for another bench player? Even if they try him out at 2B next year why not give Delwyn Young or Blake DeWitt a shot at 2B? Another bonehead move by Colletti. :p

Actually, his name is Ronald Belliard. People call him Ronnie and Ron both.

Add SS to that position played list, as he filled in for Guzman there last night. He actually might be there for the complete 3 game Colorado series.

I think Dodger fans are reading too much into this. It seems to me that this is more of a block so Arizona doesn't get him. Think about it Hudson out for the year Belliard is a solid guy that plays good D they really replace Hudsons bat with Dunn just need to replace the glove.

"What?! What about Berroa and Ozuna? Why even pay a million for another bench player?"
Berroa's entire salary is being paid by KC (along with his buyout), and Ozuna is getting the pro-rated league minimum. There would be little if any risk with this move as Belliard would make an excellent super sub next year, especially if they don't resign Blake.

They have focused on having DeWitt as the replacement, and he would be much cheaper than even Belliard.

Honestly, Penny doesn't need to be replaced. They already have a good enough rotation, and a lights out bullpen. I actually think the loss of Wade for 2 weeks is more of a problem at this point in the season now that Kershaw has settled in and Billingsley has taken over as the ace. If anything, they need to pull Park from the bullpen and finish out the year with him starting, because he has been lights out as a starter.
Billingsley
Lowe
Kuroda
Kershaw
Park/Stults
That looks pretty good to me.

Billingsly is at his career-high in IP right now. He will probably be ok, but there is always the possibility there is a problem as he gets too high over that mark as well...
Kersh is in the same boat, passing his career-high before his last start. He is much less likely to be ok though as he has so few innings on his arm; the team probably doesn’t want to use him but a couple more times…
Kuroda is kind of already a crapshoot every time on the hill anyway, every couple games he doesn’t seem to be able to get a single player out. Being in his first American season, and now getting to the point where he has faced teams a couple times, the fear of hitters building a better scouting report, adjusting and being able to increase production has to loom… He’s also been rather miserable on the road (4.75 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, .290/.344/.428 against), adding to his questionable status…
And as well as they have pitched so far in their scattered games, you cant expect Park or Stults to continue with this level of success. You can feel comfortable with them as spot-starters, but anything more and…
Those are probably a few of the things going through the teams minds at this time, and the reason they have actively pursued starters. Unfortunately, the owner also said they cant add any payroll, making it hard to add that arm they covet ~ but covet it, they do…
