« Red Sox Acquire Kotsay | Main | Drama Over Pedro Alvarez Contract »
3:25pm: Rosenthal says Fuentes' trip to the bereavement list pretty much kills the chances of a trade.
WEDNESDAY, 10:55am: Troy E. Renck weighs in, suggesting that Taveras might clear waivers. The Nationals like him, but don't want to add payroll. He expects the Dodgers, Rays, and Cardinals to put in claims on Fuentes (the Dodgers would win). The price remains a premium young starter, even though now the receiving team would get one less month of Fuentes.
TUESDAY: As expected, the Rockies have placed closer Brian Fuentes and center fielder Willy Taveras on waivers. Ken Rosenthal does not expect either player to clear.
As Rosenthal says, the Rockies will still require a return superior to two draft picks for Fuentes. He is certain to sign a multiyear deal elsewhere in the offseason. The Dodgers have first crack among contenders, though a non-contender could put in a claim just for sport.
Taveras is under team control through 2010, unless he is non-tendered before then. The speedy 26 year-old is hitting just .264/.316/.312 in 465 plate appearances.

cubs should make a claim on fuentes.
Posted by: aw | August 26, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Someone take Willy please.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 26, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Yes, the Cubs should put a claim on Fuentes! They could use a good lefty in the pen.
Posted by: cubs land | August 26, 2008 at 04:39 PM
Uhh..the Cubs wouldn't be able to get Fuentes without destroying their farmsystem. They already gave up loads for Harden and Gaudin.
About Willy, the Rockies don't won't to be move him at all. He's leading the MLB in SB, and is getting his stroke back. Neither will clear, or even become close to getting dealt.

I'd like to point out that from the perspective of a Nationals fan, there is no "just" in front of .264.
Posted by: A Washington Tragedy | August 26, 2008 at 04:49 PM
Marlins get both players?
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | August 26, 2008 at 05:57 PM
There is no way the Cubs win the claim before the Mets

Isn't it true the rox wanted clay bucholz for fuentes? If that deal is still on the table if the sox were to agree now why not? Clay is having his issues but they will subside and he will still produce in the future....that's what the rockies wanted....the sox need that bullpen help, fuentes is an option....I'm aware he wants to close but I'd put my ego aside to have a chance at a world series. And lastly, I'm sure he'd get plenty of save opportunities...give pap's arm a rest....he's the lefty to pap's right so heck....DO IT!
Am I wrong?

I wouldn't be surprised if Dusty Baker is on WJ's case to go after Taveras. He LOVES speed (and hates base cloggers). This is, after all, the guy who has given Corey Patterson and is amazing .195/.233 (he hit leadoff!!) /.338 over 270 AB's this season. Taveras would look like an absolute superstar when compared to those numbers. Why, oh why, am I a Reds fan?
Posted by: dputty | August 26, 2008 at 06:40 PM
I laugh at the cubs fans think they can get feuntes
Posted by: ChiSoxKilla23 | August 26, 2008 at 07:16 PM
"Am I wrong?"
Yes. Very very very wrong.
Clay Buchholz is one of the most untouchable pitching prospects in baseball, nearly on par with guys like Price and Kershaw in terms of value. Just because he's struggled this year doesnt mean that his potential is really any less. He's still got top of the rotation stuff and the makeup of a future ace, and he just needs to put it all together at the ML level and keep his stuff under control. No way he gets moved.
Especially for a rental, lefty set-up man like Fuentes. When the Rockies asked for Buchholz, I'm sure that the Sox laughed in their faces, said a friendly, "yeah, right, what are you, wasted?" and hung up the phone. And that's exactly what would happen now.
It seems your a Red Sox fan which is what makes this so absurd. Would you like to throw in Ellsbury, Lars Anderson and Bowden to get Taveras? Buchholz is still a prize prospect in every sense of the word, and as a Sox fan you should want them to keep him unless it gets you a game changing HOF-type player.
And honestly Cubs fans, I think we're okay. Between Wood, Marmol, Gaudin, Samardzija, Marshall and Howry, I think we have one of the best bullpens in baseball if not the best. There's no need to throw away two more prospects to land another reliever. If we could get him on the cheap, of course I'd be for it, but at the price they'll want, the equivalent of at least two draft picks, its worth it to just move ahead with what we got.
Posted by: scribbletone | August 26, 2008 at 07:18 PM
I am a Cubs fan, an we don't need Fuentes. All of this talk is moot, however, because there are many teams that would claim Fuentes ahead of the Cubs. The Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, Brewers, and Marlins if they think they're still contending would all put in a claim before the Cubs.-
Posted by: Joe | August 26, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Why would it be funny ChiSoxKilla23?? FYI the cubs OWN Chicago and fyi again they are going to be 32 games over .500%. The White Sox still needs to battle JUST to get into the playoffs

"Why would it be funny ChiSoxKilla23?? FYI the cubs OWN Chicago and fyi again they are going to be 32 games over .500%. The White Sox still needs to battle JUST to get into the playoffs"
Uhh, nothing tht you just said makes the Fuentes to cubs idea any less ridiculous.
Posted by: nrmax88 | August 26, 2008 at 10:40 PM
And having to battle to make the playoffs is not a bad thing. Meaningless Septemeber games can make a team rusty come October.
Posted by: nrmax88 | August 26, 2008 at 10:42 PM
I have to admit, I'm not all that surprised that Fuentes has stayed put. Two draft picks will likely be worth more than what anyone is willing to pony up for less than 2 months of a reliever. Especially if part of the plan is to dump Atkins and Holliday and rebuild from scratch.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | August 27, 2008 at 01:27 AM
I'm neither a Cubs or Whitesox fan but last time I checked almost every team in MLB now has won a World Series since the Cubs last did in fact I'm pretty sure teams that aren't in MLB anymore have won it more recently than the cubs. So I don't know why Cubs Land is slamming chisoxkilla.
On a seperate question do non conender teams ever make waiver claims or do you just not see that? If so the Pirates should try and claim Taveres.
Posted by: BucSox | August 27, 2008 at 09:58 AM
Would Homer Bailey be of interest to the Rockies? I personally would throw more then just Bailey to get Taverez, since the Reds need a leadoff hitter and a CFer
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | August 27, 2008 at 10:58 AM
If the Reds were interested in Taveras I'd say trade him straight up to get Fogg back.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 27, 2008 at 11:22 AM
elevanahead:
i wouldnt give up on buch just yet. lester had some trouble in his first full year too. its the confidence and he will be an amazing pitcher once he gains that confidence. the only way i see the sox trading him is for a established shortstop if that. not for some national league closer that wont help the sox for more than one month. not a good trade one bit
Posted by: gmac | August 27, 2008 at 11:30 AM
I think teams would be crazy not to place a claim on Taveras, even if just to block him from other teams. If you throw out May, he's hitting .275 on the season and better yet .305 since the ASB. Oh yeah he's got 18 more steals than the next guy in the MAJORS. I'd gladly take him in Philly over that hack So Taguchi

You know i was thinking no way Taveras makes it to a contender he is young and affordable I wouldn't be surprised if the Nats claimed him. If not heres hoping the Pirates do.
Posted by: BucSox | August 27, 2008 at 12:38 PM
crash, theres no need for either bay or lowrie on the Rox, assuming Ian Stewart fills in at LF.
How about Pedroia and Bowden for Holliday and Baker?
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 27, 2008 at 01:27 PM
TO BBALLROX4717, The Cubs gave up loads for Harden and Gaudin? What the hell u smoking! You call Murton,Patterson,Gallagher, and Donaldson too much!!! The only good player was Gallagher and he is on the DL with a tired arm! Jackass!
Posted by: bcaine | August 27, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Prog, your kidding yourself if you think the Redsox trade Pedroia, although I would love Holliday in Boston and he would be a great fit..
Posted by: Bosox4416 | August 27, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Prog stop typing, it's clear you're one of the 04+ Sox fans
Posted by: fitz | August 27, 2008 at 03:47 PM
fitz- I'm a Rockies fan, not a Sox fan. LOL.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 27, 2008 at 04:20 PM
The cubs players to the A's were not to much to give away in the trade.
Posted by: cubs land | August 28, 2008 at 12:11 AM
pedroia-bowden – i'd do it.
whatever it takes for an ortiz-holliday 3-4.
but from the rox view, would a has-a-taste guy like pedrioa be as content, whereas a still-eager guy like lowrie would be happy to stay in the show? (Plus his lefty side would be a better fit for the CR lineup)
But Bay is the key: he'd be a very decent replacement for holiday's mashing with the added big bonus of being a good Canadian kid (particularily a B.C. boy) who would bask in (and be accepted in Colorado) the warm afterglow of larry walker.
Posted by: crash | August 28, 2008 at 05:46 AM
Bay is intriguing, but the Rox should be content with Ian Stewart in LF for a lot cheaper than Bay.
Now, if the Rox were to trade Atkins, then Stewart would play 3rd and we'd be in need of a LF.
I'm not sure of Pedroia's personality, but anyone should be happy playing in this line up:
Spilborgs
Pedroia
Helton
Atkins
Hawpe
Stewart
Ianetta
Tulowitzki
Even without Holliday thats probably the best everyday lineup in the NL and aside from Helton they're all so young, they'd contend for a while.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 28, 2008 at 08:52 AM
ok for all you people who think that holliday is some dinomite hitter. go look at his stats away from the light aired coors field. and thats against NATIONAL LEAGUE pitching. every body knows that the al pitching is so much better than the nl. The sox do not need to get another bat. if anything they need relief pitching and no that doesnt mean mr. fuentes.
why would the sox sell their heart and soul for a player who is a nl hitter? makes no sense. now if what all these writers are saying will happen with the marlins why dont the sox go get hanley back?
trade something like a crisp, bowden/bucholz, lowrie for him?
WE NEED A SHORTSTOP NOT AND OUTFIELDER
Posted by: gmac | August 28, 2008 at 11:22 AM
The Marlins will not trade you Hanley Ramirez just because you want them to. He is signed long term at a reasonable contract. He is the future of his franchise.
Posted by: metsfan | August 28, 2008 at 12:05 PM
I'm a sox fan and just got a little sick reading this thread.
Posted by: Meoveryouok | August 28, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Sox fans should know better than critizing someone for playing in a hitters park. LOL.
I hope you don't get Holliday, but if you did he'd tear Fenway apart.
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 28, 2008 at 01:31 PM
yeah because holliday really teared fenway apart in his chances during the world series. he hit all his home runs at home in that series.
yes i would love to have hanley back. do i think they will trade him? not at all. but i will take a gander one of those nl east shortstops will move.
i wouldnt be surprised if they persue hardy either.
Posted by: gmac | August 28, 2008 at 03:03 PM
LOL. If you want to take 2 games played and assume that action over 81 games, go right ahead.
I'll play your game. Here's Holliday's stats for 13 regular season AB in 2007 at Fenway per ESPN:
13-AB 5-R 5-H 2-2B 1-HR 2-R 1-BB 1-SO .385-AVG .429-OBP .769-SLG 1.198-OPS
Posted by: ProgMatinee | August 28, 2008 at 03:51 PM
look at the al pitching he'll be facing. do you truely think that he will be able to have a season anywhere near to what he has in coors field?
holliday away from home hits .280 and has hit only 44 home runs. holliday home hits .364 and has 83 home runs. away from home has a .346 obs. home he has a .429.
is that a joke? do you really want a player that hits like that away from home? Johnny damon hits .317 away from home and he isnt even thought as a player anymore!
shortstop is what the sox need not holliday.
