« Astros Sign Jose Castillo | Main | Odds And Ends: Mets, Embree, Olsen, Hoffman, Izzy, Phillies »
THURSDAY: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox signed Ross to a minor league deal.
WEDNESDAY: Ross became a free agent today, and the Phillies made contact to express their interest.
MONDAY, 8:13pm: Rosenthal has added the Red Sox to the mix for Ross.
3:27pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies are interested in recently-released catcher Dave Ross. Rosenthal says they could send him to the minors and bring him up when rosters expand. The Marlins seemingly chose Paul Lo Duca over Ross earlier this year.
The 31 year-old backstop hit .231/.381/.366 in 173 plate appearances this year. He flashed prodigious power in '06, but not much since then. Ross threw out 29% of attempted basestealers this year and 41% in '07.

Lo Duca is done. He only had some power in 06 due to the roids.

"Lo Duca is done. He only had some power in 06 due to the roids."
Lo Duca's best power year was '01, not '06.
Anyway, Ross looks a bit like Dunn without the dingers, but with better defense. Can't hurt to have the guy as a backup.

Ross would be a nice third catcher for the Phils, which would allow them to use Chris Coste as a pinch-hitter and occasional corner infielder. Assuming he's on the roster prior to September 1, he'd give them a nice extra option for the postseason - if they get there, of course.

Why do you keep calling him Dave Ross? As a Reds fan I never once hear that. This is the only place I hear that name. It is DAVID Ross.

yeah I've always thought it was David Ross too.
And honestly I think the Lo Duca over Ross decision has something to do with that fact that Lo Duca played there before.
Lo Duca carries practically no value now. He's a mediocre defender and offers little else offensively than a hollow .280 BA. Ross on the other hand, offers superior power and plate discipline, and is definitely at least equal to Lo Duca on defense.

I'm confused as to the Marlins picking Lo Duca over Ross.....wasnt Lo Duca Signed about 3 days before David Ross was DFA'd?

I've seen Ross called David or Dave. It's the same name guys just shortened.
Anyway he's not the best hitter but he does have power and this year is showing good plate discipline(last year he swung at anything). During his time here in Cincinnati he proved to be very good defensively. He certainly couldn't hurt a team being a backup.

Personally i think David Ross would be a better fit with the Phillies than with the Red Sox because the Red Sox should be looking to add young catching depth and Ross doesnt fit the bill there. He would fit seemingly well with the Phillies and give them an extra bat off of the bench he can give Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste a day off here and there and he wont be a push over while at the plate or in the field either.
AA: please answer how you can compare a backup catcher like David Ross to a starting All Star caliber outfielder in Adam Dunn?

"AA: please answer how you can compare a backup catcher like David Ross to a starting All Star caliber outfielder in Adam Dunn?"
I wasn't, really. I drew the comparison because Ross' numbers look like Dunn's (low BA, decent eye, high K rate) without nearly as much power to partially make up for the downside. That said, Ross can play defense and makes sense as a backup.

I think the Sox would look to add Ross once the rosters expand in September rather than right now. He's good defensively, but it's not like he's a big upgrade over what we have already, unless the Sox think he can catch a knuckleball and be a more usefull backup than Cash, which is certainly possible.

can't be worse than when they traded for Javy Lopez.

I dont think this move is needed for the Sox right now, Tek is surging right now and i think hes just about as good as ross is offensively anyway

Nice move by Theo; there are far worse backup (and probably starting) catchers in the majors.
(Odd that Dave/David becomes a point of contention on a board where people refer to Miguel Cabrera as "Miggy" like he's their BFF or something)

I'm glad for Ross. It was nice watching him the last three years launching bombs into the bleachers. Yet another Red gets the chance for a WS ring.

i think the difference is that you hear miguel referred to as "miggy" in the press and even by commentators. i've yet to read/hear david ross referred to as anything but "david".
always nice to see the sillies miss out on another player. :)
