« Smoltz Willing To Pitch Elsewhere | Main | Elias Ranking Update: AL Relievers »
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's released DH/good guy Mike Sweeney today. He signed a $500K deal in February, and played pretty well in April. However, the A's signed Frank Thomas and Sweeney went down for eventual knee surgery in May. He tried to come back last week, but probably needs to go under the knife again.

A classic Jeromy Burnitz type guy who had a couple of decent years and then got alot of money that was never truly earned. He would be a good fit for anyone who needs to keep their medical staff in shape because I believe that his personal gurney will get its 5,000 mile tune-up over the winter.

I don't see the parallel with Burnitz.

replaced on the roster by 3B Jeff Basiley.
Sweeney and Thomas probably will not be back next year. The question becomes who the A's will go after next year. Will they go with an outfield of Cunningham/Gonzalez/Sweeney/Buck rotation with Cust at DH? Or will they sign Jason Giambi? Or go the hog and sign Mark Teixiera.

The main parallel between the two is lack of production compared to salary. Sweeney's is more defensible due to the injuries so I guess Mike Hampton of maybe Darren Driefert would have been a better one.

Sweeney is a thief. I understand that the injuries weren't his fault, but making $20,000 per game to sit and watch a ball game on the bench??? Where do I sign up for this? Best move the Royals have made this decade is letting him go.

I hope we see him back out there soon. We need good moral, charismatic guys like him in baseball.

While I think he got paid more than what his performance deserved he wasn't a thief. Besides the Royals may have used him as a reason not to sign other players but the fact is ALL major league ball clubs take out insurance policies on the big contracts they give out and have for quite a while. so in reality they got most to all of the money they paid him back. it really makes sense to get the insurance policies on big contracts to bo honest with you.

Sweeney a thief?? c'mon some may be bitter he didn't earn his money. But from what I've seen of him sonce signing with Oakland, he would much rather be on the field than on the bench. He is a great player/person for any young ballplayers to model themselves after, at least off the field.

That is really not a comparison. Sweeney had 7 excellent years on some rather crap clubs. Then again, Burnitz had 6-7 years himself.
