According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants' new managing general partner Bill Neukom is expected to retain GM Brian Sabean for 2009. The decision hasn't been finalized though. Andrew Baggarly expects Neukom to take his time to assess Sabean.
Craig Calcaterra weighs in on Schulman's article over at AOL Fanhouse. Click here to download a spreadsheet of Sabean's trade history.

He has done a good job at changing philosophy the last year and committing to a youth movement which is odd because his job is on the line. Even if he gets the ax he deserves some credit for committing to turning the organization around after he realized they were no longer World Series contenders.

This team needs change all around....starting with the top!
We need better drafts and better bats. Sure Giants are great at developing pitchers, but losing 1-0 so many times starts to hurt....just ask Matt!

Better drafts! You have to be joking right? The problem wasn't their drafts which have provided substantial talent, but rather the giant's infatuation with signing type A free agents who have cost them their first round draft choices.
In the last two drafts the Giants have produced at least 3 top 100 prospects in Bumgarner (07), Alderson (07), and Posey (08). I doubt Gillaspie (08) will be considered a top 100, but don't be mistaken about the Giant's drafts; they have certainly been top 10 drafts the last two years.
Furthermore, their activity on the Latin front has produced more top talent. Angel Villalona ($2.3 million in 07) and Rafael Rodriguez ($2.5 million in 08) have been regarded as consensus top international talents the last two years. Furthermore, another potential top 100 prospect, Henry Sosa, has also joined those ranks. They also signed a very intriguing Latin SS in Ehire Adrianza who at the age of 18 is the best fielding SS the Giants have in their minor leagues. I'd say the Giants have done quite well the last two years, and in about two more the talent will begin to surface in the Majors.
This organization has done a complete 180 in terms of talent on the farm, and Sabean and his staff deserve some credit.

I don't see how Sabean can survive with some of the awful contracts he's given out over the years, the Giants still appear far away from the point of contending. Sure, he (Or his scouts, probably the latter) has a decent eye for pitching talent, but what good does it do when just about everything he touches at the Major League level turns out poorly?
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | September 18, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Sabean? You mean that guy who gave a pitcher who's career clearly peaked in 2002 $17M a year for 7 years? A guy whos entire sucess rode on the back of 1 singular player?
There's been 100's of GMs fired for less that the muck Sabean has been rubbing in Giants fans faces over the years....
Posted by: Athletic Domination | September 18, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Thank you Juice! You are dead on.
Yes, this team has struggled the past 4 years with a dead end philosophy. But can any Giants fan tell me that a new GM could have done any better over this past season? The emergence of the kids (mainly Pablo Sandoval) along with arguably the best draft in all of baseball have made this a solid season for the team moving forward. Why not give him a chance to either show true progress next year or fail. As a diehard Giants fan, I will be happy with a young team reaching .500 and contending next year with true strides towards a playoff season in 2010 when Alderson, Bumgarner and Posey arrive.
At the end of 2006, we were looking at a team with limited Major League talent and a bone dry minor league system. Within a calender year, they have transformed that minor league system into one of the top 5 in baseball with 4 prospects (Bumgarner, Alderson, Posey and Villalona) in the top 40.
If the team continues its struggles next year, I am all for making a change, but one right now does not make sense. With that said, the Giants front office needs to make the RIGHT decision this off-season with the free agent and trade market, even if that means DOING NOTHING. The money they have available needs to be spent the correct way rather than just spending because they have it. Signing a stop-gap player like Casey Blake to a 3-year deal is not the answer.
Posted by: giants2010 | September 18, 2008 at 10:41 AM
One could argue that Sabean had little to do with the emergence of Sandoval or the players chosen in the '08 draft.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | September 18, 2008 at 10:43 AM
The Zito signing was brutal, but so was the Rowand signing. The Giants could have used Winn in CF and let a couple of the kids battle it out in RF. Instead, he signed ANOTHER veteran outfielder coming off a career year (like he did with Winn and Roberts), tying up money that could have been used on an impact bat, rather than Rowand.
Make no mistake about it, he is one of the lesser GM's in baseball.
Posted by: mymrbig | September 18, 2008 at 11:00 AM
He's not the best GM in the game.He also doesn't get nearly as much credit as he should. He has been the GM since 97.From 2000-2004 they were the winningest team in baseball. He has made his mistakes just like all GM's.Zito is just on a much higher level.
The man doesn't deserve to lose his job for one VERY bad signing, one very bad trade(liriano/nathan)and few bad years in which he had to try and build around a declining Bonds.Sabean and his assistants/scouts clearly are headed in the correct direction.
I don't think you drop him now when he's in the middle of rebuilding. If this team makes no progress by the of next year. Then maybe he should be gone if he combines that with a bad draft.
The future is bright for the Giants!
Posted by: G4LBB25 | September 18, 2008 at 11:02 AM
One could also argue that a Front Office wins and loses together and every decision made should reflect the whole. People are also crazy to think that a first round pick (especially a top 10) is solely the responsibility of a scouthing director. That pick is made by the GM.
Posted by: giants2010 | September 18, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Bottom line, and I think most would agree, is that if a change should be made, it should have been last year. Sabean was given a 2-year deal with a set goal, get younger and get back to respectability on a 2 year plan. To think he hasn't made progress from last year is foolish and a move right now would impede that progress.
Posted by: giants2010 | September 18, 2008 at 11:13 AM
I wouldn't necessarily say that Sandoval is Sabean's, John Barr's, or any other front office exec. and that wasn't my point. I mentioned Villalona, Rodriguez, and Sosa as examples of acquiring talent.
I agree Sabean has made some unfortunate signs, but SF fans are never satisfied with complacency. SF fans love moves as much as any other fan, and while Sabean should probably not make them, they have done excellent in other areas such as scouting and drafting to mitigate the damages.
Believe it or not, this team will have the money to spend to contend when the time comes. Rowand, as suggested before, will never be the player he was in Philly, but he can provide some stability to a youthful lineup. Zito was a joke, and we all know it.
Give the man his credit where the credit is due, and he has done well to improve a terrible philosophy and the future looks bright.

"If the team continues its struggles next year, I am all for making a change, but one right now does not make sense."
When a team is rebuilding, it WILL struggle. That doesn't mean Sabean isn't doing his job. If Sabean brings in more FAs though as a bandaid or builds the team around veterans, then he is in trouble.
Posted by: melonis rex | September 18, 2008 at 11:20 AM
When the team needs an impact bat in order to contend, guess what will hurt them. The Zito signing. The Rowand signing. The signing. And, on the Zito signing, it wasn't like Sabean only barely went above the highest bid to seal the deal. I'm pretty sure the second highest bid was a good amount less than what Sabean ponied up. Enough money to bring in two solid bats.
Posted by: melonis rex | September 18, 2008 at 11:37 AM
"The man doesn't deserve to lose his job for one VERY bad signing..." Actually, I think he does. The Zito contract just isn't bad, it's bad in Biblical proportions. That's like saying that Lee Harvey Oswald didn't deserve to die because he made "one bad mistake".
Posted by: MickS | September 18, 2008 at 11:49 AM
MickS- Take out Lee Harvey Oswald and put in Timothy McVeigh. That will more accurately depict the Zito signing as opposed to most other bad signings.

melonis, that has to be the greatest comparison ever.

So here's the real question since hindsight is always 20/20 on Zito. What do you do this off-season?
Cathcer - Allow Bengie to play through his contract with Sandoval backing him up and hand the job to Posey in 2010
1B - FA/Trade? Allow Ishikawa to try and prove himself as a middle of the order hitter? Plant Sandoval there everyday?
2B - Hand the job to Frandsen?
SS - Appears they think Burriss is the answer. I am fine with this if you can get more power out of 2B.
3B - Try and trade for Brandon Wood? What would it take? Sign FA/Trade? Sandoval?
LF - Looks like Lewis.
CF - Rowand
RF - Winn? Trade Winn and give the job to Schierholtz?
Starters - Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Sanchez, Lowry?
CL - Wilson

"So here's the real question since hindsight is always 20/20 on Zito."
In this case, that's not the case for Zito. Zito's peripheral numbers had been getting worse for several years before being signed. Sabean thought he signed the 2002 Zito and paid him like that. He's an albatross until 2013. There's a reason only a few teams got into the bidding and another reason why everyone was laughing after the Giants signed him. The Giants signed a guy who even at the time was a low #2 decent #3 for a record deal. Anyone really that shocked they got a #5/#6 pitcher instead.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | September 18, 2008 at 12:30 PM
All I was saying is that nobody expected it to be this bad. A low #2 or decent #3 would be great right now behind Lincecum/Cain but to say you expected it to be this bad at the time of the signing is just a lie. At least he has managed 20 wins over the past 2 seasons.
Posted by: giants2010 | September 18, 2008 at 12:48 PM
I think the Giants should try and trade Cain to the Cards for Rasmus, Joe Mather, and a pitching prospect.
Then the Giants need to either move Rowand or Winn to make room for Rasmus. Rowand is the better choice to move, but he's also harder to move because of the long contract. Winn is vastly underrated and I don't think the Giants can get full value for him because no one really appreciates his overall value (good D, solid OBP, good speed, acceptable power).
I would also look to move Molina. They should get a solid player or 2 with such a weak free agent catcher market. The team isn't winning in 2009, so it doesn't kill them to give Sandoval a chance behind the plate. Maybe try and swap Molina for McPherson or Cantu. Or maybe try and interest the Cubs in either Rowand or Winn and get back Cedeno as part of the package to take over SS.
C - Sandoval
1B - Ishikawa/Mather/Bowker/Schierholz
2B - Frandsen/etc.
SS - Burriss/etc.
3B - Sandoval
LF - Lewis
CF - Rasmus
RF - Winn
Posted by: mymrbig | September 18, 2008 at 02:44 PM
And yes, I am suggesting that they violate federal law and clone Sandoval. He is that good!
Posted by: mymrbig | September 18, 2008 at 02:45 PM
giants2010- No FAs. Winn should be traded, hands down. The Giants will not be contending in '09 unless it is by some sort of fluke miracle.
"So here's the real question since hindsight is always 20/20 on Zito"
Umm, no it isn't. Not when peripherals from 2002-06 were sitting right in front of Sabean's face when making the decision. Declining ones. Had he done his research properly, things would probably have been different.
Posted by: melonis rex | September 18, 2008 at 03:04 PM
I feel pretty confident in saying that the Cubs wouldn't want Rowand or Winn. Rowand's contract exceeds his worth, and he's a righty. Winn can bat left, but probably doesn't have the power the Cubs are looking for from a lefty, especially with Fukudome struggling so much the second half of this season.

"I feel pretty confident in saying that the Cubs wouldn't want Rowand or Winn. Rowand's contract exceeds his worth, and he's a righty."
So what? He should fit right in on the cubs then. ;).... But seriously, I could see the Cubs being interested in Rowand. I could see rumors in a similar fashion to the Brian Roberts moves of this year. Cubbie fans like the big name, like most big markets, and Rowand, while not a supertstar, is a big name. And the fans would LOVE him in Wrigleyville. He could fit right into their lineup almost anywhere, and he would play a good CF. Another 25 HR season would not be out of the question in Wrigley either. Could definitely see Rowand in Wrigley in 09.

Wood would be amazing for the giants but unless they moved a pitcher I don't see it happening. I hate sabean but I will give the giants credit for sticking it out for the entire year and actually finding out what some of these players can do. Ishikawa should for sure get a full season shot. Bowker does not get on base enough and reminds me a lot of a less productive mike jacobs. I think schierholtz is ready to produce and he is one giants prospect that has the offense to give them some hope. Winn and Molina have some good value. I think moving Winn makes more sense because of Schierholtz. Molina should stick around till his contract ends. Posey will rise quickly but Sandoval is the worst receiver I think I have ever seen! Stick him at third he'll be just as bad but at least he's not involved with every pitch. Buriss, Velez,Fransden, and to lesser extent even Denker can duke it out. All the pitching needs to stay! Unless Sanchez can bring in an elite prospect nobody should go. Cain, Sanchez and Linn will eat this division up for years to come.

Rowand, disappointing second half, sure. But I'm not committed to saying it's a bad signing. When you have young guys coming up, you need someone teaching them the right attitude. Manny Burriss and all them all talk about asking Rowand's advice, even about whether or not they're allowed to do interviews with the opposing team's play-by-play guys. He's molding the guys who'll be here for a while, and like the Pudge signing a few years back, sometimes you gotta pay to get a guy to come into a losing situation, especially when it's not a hitter's park.

* Raises hand ... I knew that the Zito signing was terrible at the time of the signing. I fully expected him to post ERA's in the 5's by at least the last few years of the contract. Did I expect it to be AS BAD as it has been? No. But, at the time everyone outside of SF fans knew this was going to really hurt them.
The Giants need to go into a full rebuild. Move Winn and Rowand and Molina. I also don't buy that Sabean has changed his philosophy. A good GM would have known that signing Rowand just wasn't a priority. They could have used their limited resources so much more effectively. I would also trade Matt Cain (assuming that the bounty would be as good as I would expect it to be).
Posted by: bjsguess | September 19, 2008 at 02:08 AM
I can't believe I'm going to defend the Zito signing. When they signed him I was shocked and against it. But, They just lost there #1 guy in Jason Schmidt and if you look at all the pitchers availible at the end o6 and 07 none were was good as Zito. He was coming off a rebound year and a big Playoff win on the road verse Santana (at Minn) All the top line 1's and 2's were locked up and the FA's avialible for 09 could have locked up with there current teams. (still might)and I believe this was the owners call. They wanted to make a splash. Unfornately this looks like the worse contract in history and I thought that at the time.
Were stuck with Rowand and Winn and that's not going to change. keep Molina around for the young pitchers put Sandoval at 1st or 3rd and sign or trade for a real slugger. That's the only way Cain's going anywhere.
Sabean did trade for Kent, Nen, Jt Snow, and Jason Schmidt and he did have 8 straight winning seasons 97 -04. Best Gaints streak since the 60's. He tried to win with Bonds in his prime and in 02 we came up 5 outs short!!!! ouch!!!
I like the promise of what I've seen this year and the direction the team currently is going. Younger!!
