5:00pm: Jocketty told MLB.com's Mark Sheldon that he hasn't heard back from Weathers' or Hairston's people in about a week since making the offers.
1:01pm: According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds made contract offers to David Weathers and Jerry Hairston Jr. Both are eligible for free agency. Weathers would probably serve as the seventh inning guy, while Hairston might handle center field duties. Weathers seems to profile as a Type B free agent, while Hairston is neither A nor B.
Fay believes GM Walt Jocketty will also attempt to re-sign relievers Mike Lincoln and Jeremy Affeldt. Affeldt had pretty big demands at the outset of the last offseason (four or five years), but ended up signing for one year.

I have no problem with this. I certainly hope that Weathers can bounce back alittle bit and pitch more like he did in 06 & 07 but he is getting older as we speak so who knows.
Hairston I am cool with but not as an everyday CF. As much as everyone in Reds country loves Freel I would love to see Hairston take over Freel's role as the skip/utility guy. He is better offensively and plays better infield.
I would defintely like Affeldt back and preferably to a 2-3 year deal maybe. He pitched really well down the stretch and they need to keep a second left handed arm back there in addition to Bray.

I really think the Reds are poised for big things, so I expect alot out of Jocketty. They have a solid staff and it looks like they are taking the right steps to sure up a pretty good bullpen.
Curious to see what other plays they will be involved in this offseason

Seems to me that now that the Reds have a glimmer of hope with their pitching they are about to become an offensively challenged team. Hairston is a nice piece in small doses but I don't see how he helps enough to get them over the hump. If I were the Reds I'd be saving my money for a more potent bat, say, someone like an Adam Dunn type (lol). Sorry Reds fans, I'll believe this team is finally on to something after they've won anything. Division, wild card, winning record. That's the proof I need to believe that the Reds are any good. Signing Hairston and Weathers is just treading water.

Honestly I think the Reds are pretty close to becoming a good offensive team as well, the key is figuring out how to fill out the whole lineup card. They have guys set in right, first, second, short, third unless Encarnacion moves to left, and left with Dickerson unless Encarnacion moves. They have some nice pieces with Bruce, Votto, Edwin and Phillips, and a massive stable of other young players like Stubbs, Alonso, Francisco, Frazier, Valaika, Soto, Mesoraco, and Duran. If the Reds can manage to have their big time offense develop at the same time as their pitching, they could be scary.
C- Mesoraco
1B- Alonso
2B- Phillips
3B- Frazier
SS- Valaika
LF- Votto/Encarnacion
CF- Stubbs
RF- Bruce
And that's without utilizing Juan Francisco, Juan Duran or Mario Soto. If they can keep Volquez and Cueto locked up, and fill out the rest of the rotation, that team could be awesome by 2011.

I can't figure out why everyone is always ready to take unproven talent and make them the Saviors of the Reds,i.e. Jay Bruce, Dickerson, Stubbs, Votto. Let them play extensively in the majors for one to two years before making them Superstars. I feel Votto, and Phillips are the only ones you could hang a hat on, that is why we need a veteran bat in the lineup that commands respect from the opposong pitchers.Ibanez from Seattle is one name that comes to mind.He can play left field and bat in the middle of the lineup. David Wright is another one, I don't know if he could be pried from the Mets for a few prospects and Encarncion but it would be worth talking about.Maybe Encarncion,Bailey,Livingston,Freel and Soto for D. Wright and Ryan Church.

RedsandBigBlue2,
One of the most single ignorant posts ever. Thinking that the Mets would 1) Give up Wright period, and 2) Give up Wright for that load of crap is appalling. Makes you sound like a Cubs fan.

And yours makes you sound like a douchebag
but who's counting?

I don't mind keeping Weathers. I alos like having Hariston around as a backup. I too would like to see the Reds get rid of a few people. Freel, Encarncion, and Bailey are high on my list of getting rid of. So that means we need this for the offseason.
3rd baseman
Left fielder
Catcher
Oh and if we are going on a spending spree lets get another top starter so the rotation can be
Peavy (ok I'm dreaming)
Volquez
Harrang
Arroyo
Cueto
Our rotation would be sick. anyway back to reality. I don't really think we need starting pitching.
I too wanna see Affeldt back
