« Brown's Latest: Fuentes, Hoffman, Wilson, Aurilia | Main | Rafael Furcal Rumors: Wednesday »
MLB.com's Mark Bowman chatted with A.J. Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker. Braunecker is confident he can get a five-year deal for Burnett, though a fifth year is not necessarily a requirement. A four-year deal is possible if the average annual value is significantly higher. My feeling: why pay Burnett $72MM over four years if you could get that fifth year for a marginal $8MM?
The Braves and Burnett still have mutual interest, and Braunecker characterized talks as positive. Bowman also talked to Chipper Jones, who had kind words for Burnett. Bowman believes Jones will feel more comfortable about finishing his career with the Braves if they sign Burnett.

My feeling: Why sign Burnett for 5 years when you can offer Sheets a three year deal worth less. both are risks for injury. Sheets has proven to be more dominant. Also hes younger. Also, I don't think any team will give him 5 years. But if the Yankees do this they wont surprise me. Especially if CC decides to play on the West coast, which makes sense for him.

are you kidding me?
Jones will feel more comfortable about finishing his career with the Braves if they sign Burnett.
Was there ever any doubt to that? That's like Ripken not finishing as an Oriole.

OK 3 things.
1. CHIPPER IS NEVER GOING TO LEAVE THE BRAVES
2. BURNETT IS MORE DOMINANT THAN SHEETS. BURNETT ALSO HAS PLAYED BETTER TEAMS BEING IN THE AL
3. AS A BRAVES FAN I HAVE SEEN BURNETT PITCH MULTIPLE TIMES WHEN HE WAS WITH THE MARLINS, HE WAS DOMINANT.

Of all the available free agent pitchers, I'm just glad the Braves are going after Burnett the hardest. He is without question the best pitcher available not named Sabathia and also one that will not cost you your team's farm.

"Burnett is NOT more dominant than Sheets. If both are healthy Sheets is a no-brainer!"
Can you at least glance at some stats before making this kind of declaration? You can make an argument that Sheets is better, though I would disagree, and it's certainly not a "no-brainer".
"CHIPPER IS NEVER GOING TO LEAVE THE BRAVES"
What position does he play when his feet/back totally give out? DH.

The best thing the Braves could do is sign Burnett to a 4-year deal first. Then with the extra money, go and try to get another SP, because we desperately need one, mabey a Ben Sheets, who suprisingly hasn't had much interest in him from any team. Any money left over after that needs to be spent on the bullpen, who cost the Braves alot last season. If we can sign those 2 SP, here will be our rotation:
1. A.J. Burnett
2. Ben Sheets
3. Tim Hudson
4. Jair Jurrjens
5. Jorge Campillo
If we could have a rotation that looked like that, we may have a chance of winning somthing. The Braves have gotta get their mind off of signing old guys past their prime and go out and be willing to spend a little money. You will never be a contending ball club being stingy. Go young, look at the Rays.

Burnett is worth 1.5x Sheets and it's been years since he's pitched in the NL. Look at how well he did coming off Tommy John's, he'll be a 2009 force. I just wish my Cubs get him if they can't get Peavy.

Braves Fan2020:
Rotation looks great but Hudson is practically out all of 2009 so that rotation will have to wait. Probably be Smoltz in place of Hudson but that is even pretty iffy. Basically, all the Braves have as of today is Jurrjens and Campillo, thus the sense of urgency Wren might have at the moment.
