« Jon Heyman's Free Agent Predictions | Main | Phillies Announce Amaro As New GM »
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains the Cardinals' offseason plans. The areas of concern: middle infield, lefthanded relief, and perhaps the rotation (maybe a swingman type pitcher). The Cards would also like an impact bat to protect Albert Pujols, but that is of lower priority.
Strauss says the Cardinals will investigate the price for Brian Fuentes and Joe Beimel. They'll also consider bringing Edgar Renteria back to St. Louis on a one-year deal worth considerably less than $10MM. The Cards should have $20MM+ to spend in total.
As for trade chips, young catcher Bryan Anderson could be one. Second baseman Adam Kennedy wants out, but has negative trade value. The Cards could also move an outfielder. Derrick Goold of the P-D suggests possible matches.

I hope the Cardinals are just a couple of good moves away from being a true contender once again. They overachieved and had a good season, but I am ready to see them back in the playoffs and fighting for a title. I really believe that if they can shore up a few parts of the team, they will be there in 2009 and beyond.

I think if Burnett wants to be a long-stay in the elite class, he should go to St Louis and work with Dave Duncan. As a Cub fan I would hate that but I feel that makes the most sense for both sides.

*correction*
They would bring Renteria back on a "short term deal".
They know that Edgar will be looking for at least 2 years but probably 3 on this next deal.

Burnett to the Cards is a horrible fit. The Cardinals need a horse-type pitcher. not someone who is injury prone, since they already have that in Chris Carpenter, who's signed through 2011. If they both were to get hurt, that's big trouble.
Forget Fuentes, pick up Beimel as the lefty.

I could see the Cardinals taking a gamble with Alan Embree.
His option has been declined by the A's. They might offer him arbitration, but I'm not sure. Dave Duncan likes reclamation projects. He'll come on the cheap.
Pick up a solid arm and then grab Embree.

I've read that the Cards may be willing to trade one of their outfielders for pitching. Street and Crosby for Ankiel and Allen Craig?
Very good closer cost controlled for 3 years and a stop gap SS on a year deal who plays much better in the NL for a very good OF on a one year Arb deal and a 3B prospect. Sounds good to me...
Thoughts?
