« Gammons Rumors: Sabathia, Manny, Furcal, Bradley | Main | Mets Targeting K-Rod, Fuentes »
The Cardinals want to sign a lefty reliever or two, but Scott Eyre, Damaso Marte, and Jeremy Affeldt went off the board quickly. GM John Mozeliak expects the rest of the southpaw relievers to follow suit, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Derrick Goold says the Cardinals have targeted Will Ohman and Arthur Rhodes, though no offer has been made to Ohman. The Cardinals have apparently made offers to others though.
If those options fall through, the Cardinals can turn to free agents Joe Beimel, Trever Miller, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes, Alan Embree, Eddie Guardado, or Brian Shouse. Scott Schoeneweis, John Grabow, Ron Mahay, Jimmy Gobble, Pedro Feliciano, George Sherrill, Jack Taschner, and Jamie Walker may be on the trading block.

arthur rhodes is one of those guys that even later in his career has remained an effective "from the left side" guy. he's a benefit to any team he's put on. someone like the rays could really use an arm like his to solidify their pen into 2009. he could add additional veteran showing into their pen.

If the cards sign Schoenweiss (past his prime) i'll happily rub it the face of cardinals fans

"If the cards sign Schoenweiss (past his prime) i'll happily rub it the face of cardinals fans"
Schoeneweis is under contract with the Mets. Good luck signing him.
I think the Cards should really go after Darren Oliver on a one year deal, and then bring in Hoffman as well. They really don't need to give out a long term deal for a closer-type guy with Chris Perez already there.
Ohman or Rhodes would be a solid signing as well.

Its very hard to sign a player who already has a contract with another team. I like the targets the Cardinals have, Ohman is a shut down lefty/lefty guy and rhodes can still get it done and best of all he will accept a short term deal.

"Ohman is a shut down lefty/lefty guy"
Umm..no. Ohman is a guy that throws left handed...he isn't that good.

"Umm..no. Ohman is a guy that throws left handed...he isn't that good."
What?
Career LHB vs. Ohman:
.197/.285/.318
Not sure how that isn't a shutdown lefty. Career 4.16 ERA and 219 K in 218 IP.
I'd say that's pretty solid, in addition he's coming off a 3.68 ERA last year.

Arthur Rhodes wasn't he here when the Pilgrims arrived?
Posted by: crazyman | November 18, 2008 at 11:53 AM
He's black, not Native American, probably came over a couple hundred years later.

I think it was more of a time reference than a race one, Kenan.
As for Ohman, I would argue that he's more of a LOOGY that's acceptable against righties, than a lockdown reliever. He's a lockdown reliever against lefties, but that 4.16 career ERA reflects his true ability.

Renteria rumors, a Lopez resigning rumor, and now these guys... though they make sense, it sure strays away from Mo's aggressive offseason plan. I feel this should have been the offseason for change for many an angry redbird fan. But yes, it's only November so we shall see.

Mo better get aggressive or there will be no one left for him to sign. less talk more action!!!!!!!

Career WHIP is 1.372 and Career ERA+ is 107. Hardly what I would call "shut down".
