| Colletti: "Some" Interest In Pettitte »
By Tim Dierkes [November 28, 2008 at 1:47pm CST]
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is back on the scene to get us up to speed with the latest Pirates rumors. Let's start with the team's five veteran trade candidates:
- Jack Wilson: The Tigers and Dodgers are said to be the main suitors. The problem is that neither team wants to send the Pirates top prospects while paying all of the $7.85MM Wilson has coming. Additionally, the Pirates do not view Dodgers shortstop prospect Chin-Lung Hu as a possible trade centerpiece. The Bucs have spoken to at least two other clubs about Wilson, but Kovacevic rejects the previously reported three-team scenario. It seems that some of the top free agent shortstops will need to sign to create a better market for Wilson.
- Freddy Sanchez, Adam LaRoche: The Pirates have received "mere inquiries" on these two.
- John Grabow, Ronny Paulino: Grabow is a free agent after '09, so his trade value may never be higher. The Pirates are apparently pushing Paulino, but don't want to sell low on him.
- Ryan Doumit, Nate McLouth, Paul Maholm, Matt Capps: These four are described as "as close to untouchable as it gets" for the Pirates.
- On the free agent front, the Pirates have made contact with Paul Byrd. However, GM Neal Huntington implied he's not finding the starting pitching bargains he expected. The Pirates haven't made offers to Doug Mientkiewicz or Jason Michaels; those players are considering proposals from other teams.
- Kovacevic adds: "The Pirates also had discussed acquiring a right-handed power bat for the outfield through free agency, but there has been no known movement on that front." Just looking at who's out there, I imagine this could be referring to Pat Burrell. Still, that's entirely speculative and he's probably out of their price range.

so basically it SOUNDS like the Buc's won't do much this offseason.........

I think they could afford Burrell but they won't really have money to sign anyone else unless they move Wilson and/or Sanchez.
Posted by: BucSox | November 28, 2008 at 02:19 PM
maybe the white sox can nab Sanchez and Paulino for some prospects it sounds like something KW would do.
Posted by: ChiSoxKilla23 | November 28, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Why would they sign Burell (or anyone LIKE him) when they could've just kept Bay? Just to get LaRoache?
Posted by: maximumpotential | November 28, 2008 at 02:26 PM
I thought Chicago wanted to get younger and faster? It doesn't seem like Sanchez would be in their plans, although it would address their 2B situation. As for Paulino, I'm sure they wouldn't mind adding a defensive catcher for depth, and I highly doubt it would cost them much.
I wonder if the Bucs and the Royals can match up for something? The Royals need an infielder after the loss of Grudz, and I highly doubt Callaspo would be an adequate replacement.
The Bucs are looking for a right-handed power bat for a corner OF spot, and it seems that Teahen or Guillen are available. He could also be a short stop-gap as they would probably have Pearce ready by the end of the contract. However, salaries wouldn't really match up, as this would add more salary for the Pirates, and we all know their ownership is, well, pretty cheap with the flow, yo.

Well something does need to be done. They can easily move some pieces, and then reinvest in others, without impacting the future. Most of the players we're expecting to be the future of this organization won't be up until late 2009 to 2010 at the earliest, with the exception of McLouth and maybe Maholm. But I'd be willing to move them to, so long as they netted some good "A" prospects and a couple of ML ready guys.
Posted by: enchinga | November 28, 2008 at 02:34 PM
The only players I care about them keeping are MCLouth and Doumit. I really could care less if they trade everyone else. I would rather not go down the Jose Guillen road again either he did come up through our system.
I would be interested to see who we could get from the White Sox for Paulino and Sanchez maybe Alexi Ramirez haha just kidding, had the White Sox fans upset for a minute. Whoever I would take a couple relief prospects maybe a b or c level starting prospect.
Posted by: BucSox | November 28, 2008 at 02:48 PM
Mclouth Doumit and Capps you mean. Yea I think its only a matter of time before McCutchen, Tabata, Alvarez, and Walker get the Bucs a nice lineup. If we can ever get some pitching we could think about winning.
I hope we dont give up on Snell! He is better than Maholm.
Posted by: We Traded Rameriez For What? | November 28, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Honestly if they traded Capps I wouldn't be mad I think he has a lot of value to a small market team that doesn't want to spend big bucks on a closer. I agree that Snell has better stuff than Maholm but Maholm has better control and is more consistant. that said I think if Snell could learn to use his changeup and pitch inside he has the potential of an ace.
Posted by: BucSox | November 28, 2008 at 03:30 PM
Neal should seriously consider trading McLouth this off-season. When will his trade value be any higher? Can he really repeat or exceed his 2008 totals? Trading him at the break wouldn't be bad as long as he maintains his 2008 level of play. Cutch would be ready by then. I would trade Capps too, but this is not the time with all the closers on the market. Neal needs to be creative and listen to everything offered for everybody. I agree with not trading Paulino low. It is unusual for the Pirates to not NEED TO trade anybody. Neal can be patient. The team will not do that well if they stand pat nor will they do a lot better if trades are made. That said, I would love to see some vets get exchanged for promising youth. Just don't do a Littlefield.
Posted by: Newmie | November 28, 2008 at 03:49 PM
I wouldn't trade McLouth or Capps this offseason. No way the Bucs get enough of a return on Capps with all the other relievers on the market. If a team wants cheap, they go to the Rockies for Street.
First of all, there are plenty of OFs and relievers on the FA market or those which other teams have blatantly made available (Giles, Street, Taveras, etc.). McLouth is better than these guys, but this is not the year to trade him.
I'd like to see Freddy Sanchez traded along with Jack Wilson though. Eat most of his salary, then trade him, since there's only one big non-washed up 2B FA on the market, and he's got a few red flags (declining defense) on him.
Seriously. Do NOT trade Snell though. Ultimate sell low move.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 28, 2008 at 04:15 PM
I wouldn't like the Pirates to sign Pat Burrell. The outfield is a potential strength with McLouth, Moss, Morgan, McCutcheon, Tabata, and possibly Pearce in RF. Tabata won't be ready by next year for sure, and I don't know about Cutch, but it doesn't make sense to sign Burrell in what will be another transitional year.
Starting pitching should be addressed, though. I won't mind a Paul Byrd signing. They've needed a good veteran to eat innings and mentor the kids for a while, they tried and failed with Morris.
I don't expect them to be very active in the FA market and I won't be disappointed if they aren't. I just hope if they start to look good, they'd supplement the team with FA talent in the future. That could've been done this year if they kept Bay :(

Does anyone else think Snell would be a nasty closer? He has all the stuff to have success in this league, but it seems like when he can't get guys to swing at his breaking ball, he falls apart. I hope the new pitching coach can correct this. I've seen him dominate free swinging teams but against patient ballclubs, he struggles so much.
Posted by: bigpat | November 28, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Snell has ace stuff he just is afraid to throw inside and use his changeup if he works on these things he could be a 15-20 game winner.
Posted by: BucSox | November 28, 2008 at 05:15 PM
Snell lacked command last year and the last thing you want in the 9th inning is a pitcher that is all over the place.
I still love his stuff though!

C Ryan Doumit
1B Neil Walker ?
2B ?
SS ? Bixler has shown little
3B Pedro Alvarez
LF Andrew McCutchen
CF Nate McClouth
RF Jose Tabata
I love the potential of the Bucs lineup in a year or two. These guys are all top notch players/ prospects. If we get rid of Laroche, Wilson or Sanchez we need to replace those positions with a top prospect or pitching. Of course we have little pitching.
Posted by: We Traded Rameriez For What? | November 28, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Pirates lineup in 2010:
CF McCutchen
2B Shelby Ford, although I would like to see them make a play for Cano
LF Nate McLouth
C Ryan Doumit
3B Pedro Alvarez
1B Brandon Moss, Used to be a Shortstop I think this is the only way he fits in the future
RF Jose Tabata
SS Chin Lung Hu, I feel this deal with the Dodgers will get done
P Maholm/Snell/Ohlendorf/Veteran/Duke, Gorzo, McCutche, or Karstens
Bench:
Nyjer Morgan
Neil Walker
Robinzon Diaz
Brian Bixler
Steve Pearce
Bullpen
Matt Capps
Craig Hansen
Denny Bautista
TJ Beam
Veteran
2 of the Duke/Gorzo/Karstens/McCutchen that don't make the rotation
That said if they can sign a solid #1 or #2 pitcher get Cano and add a veteran or 2 to the pen that is a competitive team my friends.

You think Shelby Ford is that close?
Posted by: We Traded Rameriez For What? | November 28, 2008 at 08:11 PM
I think the number one priority of the Pirates this offseason should be to ink at least one, if not all, of McLouth, Doumit, and Maholm to extensions. Invest in the youth, for a young team going forward.

dude if mclouth was traded this offseason it would be terrible for the city.
youre one star you trade away for most prospects?
yikes

"dude if mclouth was traded this offseason it would be terrible for the city.

Here's what I think. If you give up a McLouth right now you are selling high. You could potentially acquire someone like Hughes from the Yanks plus a "A-" prospect like Betances. Hughes would immediately go into the rotation and Betances would come up the following year in 2010 when the rest of the future guys come up. Offensively we should be fine with the likes of Tabata, Cutch, and hopefully Alvarez. You also shore up 2 spots in your rotation with 2 solid pitchers in Hughes and Betances. Throw in Maholm, Mccutchen, maybe even Brad Lincoln, to go along of whoever is left from Gorzo, Snell, and Duke, and you have the makings of a real strong rotation. Look, I like McLouth as much as any other Pirate fan, but if a team makes you an offer like that, I think you seriously need to consider it.

Like i said earlier i think the sox make a run at Paulino.
For fun i made a Whitesox/Pirates trade for Mclouth
Whitesox Get:
Nate Mclouth
Ronny Paulino
Pirates Get:
Aaron Poreda
Brian Anderson
Josh Fields
Javier Vazquez?
Poreda is a potential 2-3 starter/ Closer. Brian Anderson is a nice defensive CF with some pop. Josh Fields is a good 3b, shaky on defense but hit 20HR is rookie year. Javy is in there because i wanted to put him in there, gives a MLB ready SP.
Note: Dont think of me as a blind fan like all the Yankees are. Just a fun situation to see what else other people can add/remove to it.

"You think Shelby Ford is that close?"
I think he will be ready in 2010 I am sure he will start the year in AAA this year and if he has a good year there he could see Pittsburgh in September.
The Pirates could actually be competitive this year if the following happens:
1. Trade Wilson to the Dodgers eat some/all of his salary get Hu, Young, and whoever.
2. Trade Sanchez get whatever you can for him hopefully solid relievers.
3. Sign Pat Burrell move Moss to 1B
4. Sign a decent veteran 2B like Mark Grudzielanek or Ray Durahm.
4. Trade Adam Laroche for a young starter.
5. Bring up and start McCutchen.
6. Sign Pedro Martinez as a 4th or 5th starter (Veteran with experience and a taste of success and a very competitive nature)
7. Bring back Dougie and Jason
Do all of this and here is your opening day roster:
Lineup
1. CF McCutchen
2. 2B Grudz/Durahm
3. LF Nate McLouth
4. RF Pat Burrell
5. C Ryan Doumit
6. 1B Brandon Moss
7. 3B Walker/Laroche
8. SS Chin Lung Hu
9. P Paul Maholm
Bench
OF Nyjer Morgan
OF Jason Michaels
UT Doug Mientiewicz
IF Brian Bixler
C Robinzon Diaz or Ronny Paulino
Rotation
1. Paul Maholm
2. Ian Snell
3. Ross Ohlendof
4. Pedro Martinez
5. Zach Duke
Bullpen
LR Tom Gorzelanny
LR Jeff Karstens
MR Denny Bautista
MR TJ Beam
LH Sean Burnett
SU John Grabow
CL Matt Capps
The bullpen is shaky but like I said you get relievers for Sanchez and hopefully a decent starter for Laroche and this team could compete for the Wild Card obviously they are a long way from the Cubs.

"Whitesox Get:
Nate Mclouth

Don't need a 3B and Javy Vazquez just not really good for us. For McLouth I think Danks or Floyd would be needed.
Posted by: BucSox | November 29, 2008 at 12:43 AM
Speaking as a Red Sox fan, I would love to take Ronny Paulino off your hands. He could help to fill our catching vacancy rather nicely. What do you guys think it would take to get him?
Posted by: kbin007 | November 29, 2008 at 01:26 AM
Delcarmen for Paulino?
Posted by: BucSox | November 29, 2008 at 01:33 AM
How about a package of Wilson and Paulino, or Treanor(if aquired from Marlins) to the Tigers for Armondo Galarraga and Micheal Hollimon?
Posted by: hitman79 | November 29, 2008 at 03:39 AM
I would love to get Galarraga but Wilson and Treanor or Paulino is not enough for him I don't think.
Posted by: BucSox | November 29, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Losing Galarraga would kill the Tigers.
I would trade him and Hollimon for Wilson (eating all of his salary) and Matt Capps, however.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | November 29, 2008 at 02:39 PM
I really like the idea of signing Pedro Martinez. Hes is a good veteran who could really help the young rotation out.
Adam Dunn seems like a possible good fit if they consider trading Adam LaRoche. He can be a better left handed power bat than LaRoche and there hasn't been much on him yet, so they Pirates might be able to get him cheap.
Posted by: Tcass12 | November 29, 2008 at 03:01 PM
If salary is an issue with the Jack Wilson to Detroit deal, why not take Nate Robertson back in a Wilson/Paulino package? Nate along with a high level prospect? Tigers want to dump his salary, right?
Posted by: RedEye | November 29, 2008 at 03:51 PM
BucSox, I like your seven step plan. I would pass on Burell and put that money towards a starter. If the LA trade goe through our outfield could be Young - Nate - Pearce/Moss platoon. I think Walker will eventually replace LaRoche. I can't see anyone trading for him until the break, I hope I'm wrong. Like Neal stated, this could be a drastically changing offseason.
Posted by: Newmie | November 29, 2008 at 03:54 PM
The guy that metioned Dunn the reason I went with Burrell over him was that Neal said he wanted a right handed power bat. If the Pirates can move Laroche and Burrell and Dunn are there I think you have to at least try to offer a contract as either would be a nice addition to the lineup. With the interest and money being spent on Tex and Manny I think the Pirates could sneak in and grab one of these guys. Honestly we won't be able to get any starter of the CC, Burnett, Sheets, Lowe tier and after those guys is it really worh throwing 10+MM at a stater. Honestly would any Pirate fan here be upset with signing Burrell or Dunn.
Posted by: BucSox | November 29, 2008 at 05:23 PM
I know its not going to happen but I would love to see the Pirates offer a 5 year contract to Burnett or Sheets. If you get a top of the rotation pitcher it would do wonders for the bullpen.
Posted by: We Traded Rameriez For What? | November 29, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Ronny Paulino for Boone Logan Fair for both sides. Thoughts?
Posted by: whitesoxfan2009 | November 29, 2008 at 06:14 PM
Logan for Paulino wouldbe fair.
Ramirez,
If the Pirates have any chance of signing Burnett, Sheets and Lowe, and I just want to say it is an extreme longshot, they would have to give them more years than any other team.
For Example:
Best offer for Burnett 4yr/60Mil for the Pirate sto have a prayer they would have to come with 5yr/70+ million.
Posted by: BucSox | November 29, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Redeye, I don't think a Robertson for Jack Wilson trade would suffice, considering that the Tigers still need Robertson. He slots in as the only lefty in our rotation, and his peripheral stats were much better than his ERA.
Posted by: rdccdr801 | November 29, 2008 at 07:44 PM
BucSox, I also agree with your plan. Based off of that, does anyone think that we could ship off both Sanchez and Laroache to the D-Backs? According to Kurkjian, those are the two holes that they need to fill.
