« Gregg Next Marlin To Go? | Main | Yankees Sign Damaso Marte »
According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have inquired on free agent starter on Derek Lowe. Scott Boras even gave them one of his infamous books hyping the 35 year-old righty. Massarotti figures the Red Sox consider Lowe a safer bet than A.J. Burnett or Ben Sheets.
Massarotti adds that the Red Sox are looking for groundballing strike throwers in terms of bullpen additions. He wonders if Doug Brocail or Brandon Lyon could work. I noticed that Brian Shouse, Todd Coffey, Dennys Reyes, and Jeremy Affeldt also fit the profile, for what it's worth.

do the Red Sox really need "the book" on Lowe. Shouldn't they already know all there is to know? Prime example of "BORAS OVERKILL"

I am going to apoligize ahead of time. Me and my friend have been going back and forth back and forth about what the sox should do. So heres a dream scenario that needs a lot of blocks to fall in place but here it goes.
Trade lowell and 12 million(half contract) to Minnesota for b level prospect.
Trade B level prospect and Michael Bowden plus a ptbnl to Texas for Salty
Resign Tek 2 years 15 million
Sign Texiera 6 years 130 mil
Trade Julio Lugo, Coco Crisp, Josh Reddick, and bryce Cox to Chicago for Vazquez and Swisher. Fits into their needs for more athletism and fills the voids at 2b and cf while getting the 2 guys they are trading off their hands.
Sign a speedy defensive minded 3b with no offense.
1.Ellsbury
2.Pedroia
3.Ortiz
4.Tex
5.Youk
6.Drew
7.Bay
8.Tek/Salty
9.Lowrie
1.Cora
2.Swisher
3.Salty/Tek
4.3b
1.Lester
2.Beckett
3.Dice-K
4.Vazquez
5.Wake/Buch
1.Wake/Buch
2.Aardsma(until Bard is ready)
3.Lopez
4.Delcarmen
5.Oki
6.Masterson
7.Papelbon
Still leaves a 6 million drop in payroll from last year...

if the Sox sign Lowe im gonna be pissed. He's 35 and is gonna cost at least 15 million per season for 3-5 years.. Stay away..

come on, Phils, Boras spent ALL that time making his little scrapbook, the least the Sox can do is pretend to look at it, or at least thank him for it. Obviously they know everything they need to know on him, but if he's got the book anyway, no harm done.
Despite having to see the Derek Lowe Face on occasion, he scares me the least of any of the free-agent signings that they could grab...

Neither Brocail nor Lyon are GB pitchers.

Had Lowe played in the AL the last four years people would be urging him to retire now he's wanted by everyone who figures to contend in 09. Crazy, Sox please pass half a season of Schilling will get more wins than a whole year of Lowe.

I love the idea of signing Lowe. When he's motivated he's an amazing pitcher, playoff proven, lots of experience, and with the better Sox defense behind him I think it just adds up.
He's actually the free agent pitcher that I'd most like the Sox to sign this year. The Yanks can have Sabathia. I look forward to laughing at his fat ass when he blows open in a critical playoff game.

Seanaks21. This isn't MLB 2K8 or MLB The Show. No team will ever make that many trades or trade that many players just in one off season. It's not like the Red Sox need a whole lot of rebuilding, I bet a healthy Ortiz would of put them into the World Series.
