« Jake Peavy Rumors: Tuesday | Main | MLBTR Chat Transcript »
According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Brewers reliever Salomon Torres has decided to retire to spend more time with his family. He leaves a probable $3.75MM salary on the table.
Torres may not have been the Brewers' choice for next year's closer, but it's still a big loss. Eric Gagne, Guillermo Mota, and Brian Shouse are also free agents, so Doug Melvin has his work cut out for him. Fortunately, the closer market is looking deep right now.

Crew should trade Rickie Weeks, Angel Salmone and Alcedes Escobar for Brian Roberts and George Sherril.

Two of our top prospects for one year of Brian Roberts and a mediocre reliever? The Brewers aren't stupid.

Didn't Torres threaten to retire when he was initially dealt to Milwaukee?

That is kind of a shock. Torres was effective last year and seemed healthy.

I remember watching him pitch for the Mariners in the mid 90's and thinking he was garbage. Yet, he managed to resurrect his game and went on to a decent big-league career. Good for him, hope he enjoys the free time.

Lidocaine- I would love that trade as an o's fan but it doesn't really make sense for the brewers.

Torres will be back for one more year if the Brewers sign a top starter, otherwise he'll go home or ask for a trade to Pittsburgh which we might be able to do to accomodate him.
