« Manny Arbitration Situation | Main | Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Mets, Tigers, Red Sox, Angels, Pirates »
According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Giants are interested in Reds third baseman Edwin Encarnacion. Fay considers EE the most likely Red to be traded, with Homer Bailey second on that list. Encarnacion, 26 in January, hit .251/.340/.466 in 582 plate appearances while playing poor defense. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, so he's under team control for three more seasons.
Fay also notes that Walt Jocketty and Jim Bowden haven't matched up on a trade in over ten years, and Joey Votto isn't going anywhere. Yesterday ESPN's Jerry Crasnick said the Nationals explored trading for Votto (among others).
One more note: David Weathers is negotiating with several teams, Reds included. Nothing is close.

Not a match. EE is headed to the OF, and SF needs a 3B. I doubt these two sides will find a match.

Bailey will most likely get dealt. He needs a change...

God, this makes my day. I'd love to see E5 and Bailey go to the Giants, as I've been keeping an eye on them all off-season. How about Bengie Molina and Sanchez for E5, Bailey and an infield prospect (not named Frazier or Valaika)?
The Reds need an LH starter, a RH middle of the order bat, and a catcher.
BTW, I actually think E5's defense can be pretty good. His issues have primarily been throwing the ball, and the Reds haven't exactly had a gold glove over there at first during E's tenure. He also makes the unbelievable play and screws up the ordinary. maddening.

I would trade EE for Matt Cain and Bengie Molina(although I don't know Molina's contract status.)

E5-classic...Nice one...
Posted by: KG2577 | December 05, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Has there been any word on who the Reds might (reasonably) be looking to receive in return?
As an aside, Moline is NOT a middle of the order right handed bat...he hits well-ish for a catcher, but come on...

If that doesn't happen then I would suggest Error Encanarcion will be tried out in left field.
Jocketty will you pleae sign Rafael Furcal and then make the trade for Jermaine Dye.
Furcal
Harriston
Votto
Dye
Phillips
Bruce
Encanarcion
Molina
*pitcher* IT LOOKS Good.

There's no way the Giants are going to trade Matt Cain. Sabean and company are smitten with him. I'd rather see the Giants pull the Sanchez-for-Cantu trade with the Marlins than try for Encarnaciohmygodwhyisthisguyplayingthird.
And I'm sorry, Encarnacion's range, speed, and throwing strength are all pretty poor. He's a liability at third and will either hit the outfield or become a DH in the American League. Seriously, he's that bad. The Giants' acquisition of this guy would mean he's the hold-over "talent" until Angel Villalona gets his bearings. Although Villalona strikes me as a first baseman moreso than a third.
Why don't the Giants just sign Joe Crede and go with their gut? They'd been in on discussions with the Sox about Crede since mid-2007. Perhaps his health issues are too big a concern at this point (nothing wrong with that).

I would trade EE for Matt Cain and Bengie Molina(although I don't know Molina's contract status.)
I JUST THREW UP IN MY MOUTH A LITTLE!!!!
EE would get Sanchez at best!
Posted by: 55saveslives | December 05, 2008 at 01:23 PM
@nckdmss: You're absolutely right. Look at Geovany Soto, who is just as good as Molina in a number of ways. He hits seventh in that Cubs lineup. The only reason Molina hits fourth or fifth for the Giants is because of the AAA and AAAA talents hitting around him. Who else is going to drive in runs? Pablo Sandoval can't do everything.
Posted by: Ruck859 | December 05, 2008 at 01:25 PM
Jonathan Sanchez for Edwin Encarnacion would be a great trade and Sanchez is that lefty starter that they really need.
Posted by: slumpbusters50 | December 05, 2008 at 01:26 PM
I'd like to see the White Sox try to land bailey and EE, for Dye and a prospect or two.
Like everyone has said, EE's defense isn't stellar, but he's a player who would definitely benefit from a short rightfield fence at the Cell

*Leftfield fence*
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | December 05, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Encanarcion is only 25 years old about to be 26 and he should not be a third baseman but if the Giants moved him to left field I think they would be pleasantly suprised. If Sabean doesn't give up Matt Cain, considering he has been worked over 200+ innings the last two years and his opp batting average has reached .251, then you will not get Encanarcion. Period.

I like Edwin E. His problems on Defense are with his throws and not with actually fielding the ball. WHen he doesn't ahve time to think about making a throw he does all right. It is when he fields a hot shot and then has time to think about the throw is when he gets messed up.
He somehow curls his wrist, drops his elbow and the ball sails on him.
Also, if EE is traded, WHO plays Third Base, A Gon? Keppinger? If that happens, then who plays when A Gon is injured or can't start the season, Keppinger at Third and Janish at Short?
I think Edwin E would do well if he DIDN'T play Winter Ball. I think by playing Winter Ball EE gets tired and undisciplined and that is why he doesn't do very well at the start of the Major Legue season. If I were the Reds, I would tell him to NOT play Winter Ball but to, instead, stay home, rest and work at hitting the ball to the opposite field and learn how to Bunt.
I say learn how to Bunt because Dust for brains is going to continue to ask guys to try and Bunt even if he knows they can't do it. So, EE might as well start practicing now so that when the regular season comes around and toothpick gives Ee the Bunt sign, he can surprise us all by actually getting one down successfully.
Now, if Jockitchy thinks Edwin E has to be traded then I say package him with Homer Bailey and Ryan Freel and get Jonathen Sanchez, Bengie Molina and Randy Winn back.
That would add about $7 million to the Reds salary but give them a Left Handed Starting Pitcher, a starting Catcher and a switch hitting Outfielder with a good Batting Average and speed to steal some bases and cover some ground in the Outfield.
The Giants would get the Third Baseman they have been looking for, a young, inexpensive Starting Pitcher and a super sub. They would also lose some salary.
The salary they free up would allow them to sign Pat Burrell and getting rid of Winn would free up a space in the Outfield for Burrell.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 05, 2008 at 01:35 PM
I'd rather see Josh Fields slotted in at third than Encarnacion until Gilmore is ready to go. The Sox would benefit from Bailey and a Chris Dickerson type as they need a true center field talent who can lead off.
Posted by: Ruck859 | December 05, 2008 at 01:36 PM
you get Bailey for Dye. Why would we throw in another starter when dye is owed 12.5 million next year. You are dreaming.
Posted by: Robert | December 05, 2008 at 01:38 PM
I think the Reds should sign Texeria and then fly straight to Washington and ask for a bail out. Then we sign God.
Posted by: Robert | December 05, 2008 at 01:41 PM
Even with a bailout and GOD on the team, I think toothpick would find a way to mess it up and the Reds would finish under .500.
Posted by: ctownboy | December 05, 2008 at 01:45 PM
I think EE for Sanchez is a very reasonable deal and something that could work for both sides.
Posted by: schellis | December 05, 2008 at 01:56 PM
Hey robert your comment was hilarious. and ctown your right he would screw it up . man is he is terrible.

"I would trade EE for Matt Cain and Bengie Molina(although I don't know Molina's contract status.)"
AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
YOU MUST BE JOKING.

There's no question that Molina hits cleanup for SF, not because of his talent, but because of the lack of it around him. If Sandoval doesn't project as the starting catcher than there's no reason for SF to trade him.
The talk around here is that E5 is considered a little slow for the OF and might find himself at 1B. That was before the Reds drafted Alonso. Now they're saying he'll stay at 3B if he isn't dealt.
I'd say Keppinger starts at 3B unless someone's brought in. I was hoping Beltre would be available, but am getting skeptical of the M's "firesale". Gonzo really needs to get healthy. We've been deprived of seeing what he and Phillips can do for a pitching staff.

Dye is owed $11.5 million next season and $12 in 2010 should his club exercise that option ($1 million to buyout). Besides, what has Homer Bailey done in the majors thus far? Oh yeah, walk a ton of guys and only show mini-flashes of what he's capable of doing. That's not enough to justify a 1-for-1 when considering an average defensive RF with strong power numbers.
The Reds have young talents with budding power, true. But they are not quite there yet, and Dye's added power would mean big things for that lineup, pushing his value well beyond that of a Homer Bailey. Jocketty paid to keep Adam Dunn around as long as he did, so I think forking it over for Dye and sending two players back to Chicago is more than reasonable.

hey wildabeast i wouldnt be surprised to see edwin strait up for lincecum, i mean didnt your dumass gm just throw 18.5 mil at the great EDGAR RENTERIA
Posted by: DUSTYbakerSUX | December 05, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Yonder Alonso is the Reds' answer at third base if Encarnacion is dealt or repositioned. Huge future for that kid.
Posted by: Ruck859 | December 05, 2008 at 02:09 PM
I think Encarnacion straight up for Molina would be a good deal for both teams. I know Walt likes his veteran defensive presences behind the plate. Maybe add Hinshaw to the deal.
Posted by: mateodh | December 05, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Hey Ruck, EE and Cantu both are butchers at third. Actually they're both ranked as -14 at the position.
Also it shouldn't have to be said but Cain For EE? HA HA HA NO!
Posted by: kdub | December 05, 2008 at 02:09 PM
Ruck...EE is not as bad as you're saying...obviously you dont watch him every day. he is VERY good with his GLOVE....he makes bad throws every once and a while...he is a good hitter with good potential...
Sanchez for Encarnacion would be perfect for both teams, but would require the Reds to sign someone like Izturis or Everett to cover third and short....
I would love that trade, but would also like to try to get Winn or Molina...but EE for Sanchez would be fair for both teams..
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 05, 2008 at 02:29 PM
I have not read or heard anyone who seriously thinks Alonso will play 3B at the MLB level. He'll be at 1st and Votto will be in LF in 2010.
Molina is only under contract through next season (at a palatable $6M), so he's not a long-term solution to our C problem. Unfortunately, the Reds don't have much in the system at C since the verdict is very much out on Mesoraco.
Posted by: bweav44 | December 05, 2008 at 02:30 PM
Ctown: If the Giants were in “all in mode” there is some logic to the Giants moving Winn & Molina. The other thing is they both qualify as Type “A” if their contracts ended this winter instead of next. Molina is probably a pretty safe bet to keep Type “A” and Winn (while Mr. Steady) is in a rougher group should still be a type “B”. That would give team a chance to get 5 picks in the 2010 draft before the by the end of the second round. That’s a nice little farm recharge kit between them.

Anyone who thinks EE is worth Matt Cain needs to be kicked in the head!

"I think the Reds should sign Texeria and then fly straight to Washington and ask for a bail out. Then we sign God."
One of the funniest posts I have read on this site.

"I would trade EE for Matt Cain and Bengie Molina(although I don't know Molina's contract status.)"
The Giants wouldn't do that and if they are going to trade Cain it would be for someone more proven and a major impact bat.
Posted by: lincecum4cy | December 05, 2008 at 03:58 PM
I wouldn't mind the Reds trading EE strait up for Sanchez. Could help both teams and the Reds can always find someone else to play 3B, perhaps that fella out in Seattle? Also we should drive to Washington in a small flex fuel car to ask for a bailout, not fly. After all, we're not Generous Motors.
Posted by: BuckiBlaze | December 05, 2008 at 05:04 PM
EE for Winn. That's fair enough
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | December 05, 2008 at 07:08 PM
EE for Winn yeah right! EE has enough talent just needs to work on his mechanics. I don't know how many times I seen him making a web gem. I f were going to get a player in the OF it should be Bailey for Dye. EE has alot more value than Bailey.
Posted by: 19jeff83 | December 05, 2008 at 09:47 PM
The Giants should forget about EE and Cantu and throw in a prospect with Sanchez and get that Seattle 3rd baseman, if that not possible try and sign Crede, I'd rather have Pedro Feliz then EE or Cantu

keep freel trade encarnacion.
