Jeremy Guthrie Leaves Boras

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, longtime Scott Boras client Jeremy Guthrie personally visited the agent in Las Vegas to inform him he's changing representation.  Guthrie will now be represented by Casey Close and Brodie Van Wagenen.

Guthrie said his decision was not related to Boras' preference for his younger clients to avoid long-term deals.  He simply called it a "personal preference for my career."  It's not known whether the Orioles would like to sign Guthrie long-term.  He'll turn 30 in April, yet has only two years of Major League service.  Guthrie spent two years on a Mormon mission.

Zrebiec's article also addresses the Daniel Cabrera non-tender situation.  Is he worth $4MM for one more year for the pitching-starved Orioles?  Team officials are mixed on the decision.

I don't think the O's have a choice but to keep Cabrera.

I can't say I was worried about Guthrie leaving anyway... he is under team control through 2012, still, always nice to have one less scott boras client destroying the fa market

I'm just glad to see someone is still reporting.

Cool.

I have a feeling this has to do with being interested in an extension. This just smells extension. From what I've heard of him, he comes off as a pretty modest guy.

And, I think the Orioles should extend him.

Carbrera certainly seems risk-worthy - Loads of potential.

If Cabrera is a non tender candidate, what kind of player(s) would the Orioles want in return for him?

I dont know why they are so open to letting him walk. It would just be one more rotation slot unfilled and left open. He's obviously erratic and extremely unpredictable but he at times strings together a good outing and can eat innings. We've got nothing to lose in keeping him

Sorry, Mr. Boras. It's not about the longterm deal stuff. It's that you're Satan and all. It just... seems wrong.

Good riddance, Guthrie.

Melonis: I agree with you I think after Roberts and Markakis you have to talk about extending Guthrie. He's done a really good job for them these past 2 years, I say try and lock him up through his first FA year or two. Given his age it shouldn't be too bad of deal.

As for Cabrera I think it would be a bad move for the O's to let him go. Is he an ace no not even close, but $4 million isn't that bad of a deal for a guy who can give you 180 innings. If the O's do end up filling thier rotation spots they can always trade Cabrera later. Right now no one is gonna offer anything b/c they think he may get non tendered, but after tomorrow I could see a few teams willing to give up a mid level prospect for him.

if the O's don't want him, uncle Omar does : )

Pretty sure Guthrie is white, so that rules him out as an option for the Mets.

"Pretty sure Guthrie is white, so that rules him out as an option for the Mets."

I think he was talking Daniel Cabrera. No way Guthrie isn't an Oriole in 2009.

I do not understand the lack of respect Guthrie gets. He is top 15 in WHIP and ERA in the AL. He pitches against some of the best offenses in the majors.

Sure if you look at his win total its not that great. But he outpitched a lot of 'big names' this season.

Also losing Cabrera would be dumb. $4 mil for him vs $13 mil for Garland (which I predicted was his price) is an easy call.

I think that is a decision that just shows who Jeremy Guthrie is as a person...

Two years ago while visiting a friend in Florida I decided to catch a game since the O's were in town. After a bullpen session Jeremy made his way down the 3rd base line signing autographs. The guy standing next to me was what I like to call an "E-Bay" baseball fan (meaning he had a binder the size of Websters Unabridged full of player cards). The guy pulled an Indian's rookie card out of his binder and handed it to Guthrie for him to sign prompting this exchange that I still remember clearly:

Jeremy : "I'm sorry, but I can't sign this one for you."

Fan: "Why not?!" (already getting snotty)

Jeremy: "Because I'm not with Cleveland anymore. I'm an Oriole now and I just don't feel right signing it, but I can do a ticket stub or anything else you'd like."

Fan: "What I'd like is for you to sign THIS card! I'm not an Orioles fan so it doesn't matter to me what uniform you're wearing."

Jeremy: "But it matters to me."

The guy tried to protest further, but Jeremy stood his ground (being extremely polite and patient, I might add) and the guy eventually stormed off without his autograph.

I admire Jeremy for having his beliefs on the matter (heck, he'd only been with his new team a matter of months) and not swaying just because it would have been easier to do so. It's just my speculation, but it could very well be that he's just not comfortable with the way that Scott Boras does business. Doesn't mean that Jeremy doesn't want to get paid, but I think he's more of a gentlemen's agreement type than a play-this-team-against-that-one kind of guy.

Why is who a guy's agent is automatically indicative of what type of person the player is? Maybe when he had Boras he just wanted his agent to handle everything, so that he could focus on baseball. I have no idea, you have no idea. Its their careers, if they want to hire an agent who they think will get them every last dollar, that is their right. How is it bad for baseball? The best thing for any business is everyone doing what is in one's own self-interest, and it's sort of a natural checks and balances system between the employers (teams) and employees (players). It's called capitalism.
