« Astros Sign Doug Brocail | Main | Reds Unlikely To Sign Wood »
According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles' contract extension talks with Nick Markakis are on hold and probably will not be revisited for at least six weeks.
The Orioles are looking to sign Markakis for his three arbitration years as well as at least three of free agency. Markakis would like to observe the free agent market before resuming talks with the Orioles. Perhaps Markakis and his agent plan to value his free agent years based on the contracts for players like Raul Ibanez and Bobby Abreu.

YES!!
Markakis is WAY too good to be stuck on the Orioles.
He is going to be one of the best in baseball when he hits his prime.
That being said, he is already up there.

good point lego... players like markakis should only be playing for the yanks, sox or cubs! how dare the orioles even bother?

Definitely one of the best young players in the game.
A great defensive right fielder who hits for lots of contacts, churns out doubles that one day may turn into home runs, and has great plate discipline. The guy is already a star at 25 and should be a cornerstone of that team, with Jones and Wieters.

Not a problem here, the O's have stepped it up since the first offer. Once the Orioles sign Tex and Burnett, Markakis should take some steps toward the Orioles direction and this thing will get done.

I think the 'Free Agent look' is to see if the Orioles do anything.

One day hit for homeruns? Hasn't Markakis hit like around 20+ HRs every season since he boke into the majors? That's prime power considering he's done it with no protection whatsoever, and, he did it before age 25.

well i hope so XD23, they better extend his contract and not let him walk in 3 years

Markakis might be postponing talks because of this horrid economy. All signs point to a 6 year or so contract. It would be a shame if this economy ends up being such a suppressed market that he gets locked in at a very low rate.

I meant that in terms of increasing his home run power. Right now Markakis has probably 25 HR power, but as he reaches his physical prime he may be able to become a 30-35 HR hitter, which when combined with his contact and plate discipline tools makes him an awesome talent. I love this kid.

Markakis and Roberts are 2 people that Angelos needs to get away from stage fright of "Belle" contracts and get him signed ASAP. Markakis will sign, just get with him every chance you can Angelos, your team's future rides with this man..

Considering all the signs that free agents are going to sign for a lot less than everything initially thought they would, isn't waiting 6 weeks to talk the worst thing Markakis could possibly do?
If he signed by now, he might've gotten a deal comparable to other recent deals. If he waits until free agents sign and they get weak deals, he's going to get a weaker deal. Yeah, if Dunn and Abreu turn around and sign for $60/4 each, it's good for him, but I doubt that's going to happen...

Point taken, scribble. After rereading your post that's what I sort of gathered. You were pointing to his doubles power to indicate his peak power numbers. Whatever the case might be with Markakis though, considering his superb strikezone discipline, it's so much easier see him sustain a long career. Even at 25 HR power, with a smattering of 30 HR seasons, one can see this kid hold that level for a long time.
For me, the biggest thing that jumps out at me about Markakis is his desire to take a walk and his arm. His willingness to take a walk is intriguing, especially considering that here's a kid who can hit homeruns at will, as his AA Home run Derby performance attests to. That might be the only time I ever saw him cut loose. He was hitting moonshots back to back to back. Usually kids with power, in today's age, swing for the fences as often as possible. With Markakis, he doesn't seem to make a distinction between HRs and a walk, and based on his comments, you'd think OBP is his favorite stat. If you ever see his arm throw to the infield, you can see why some teams would have drafted him as a pitcher. The throws are accurate and laser lines. I once saw him throw to home plate and the ball stayed aloft on a line about 5-8 ft. all the way to the plate at about 95 mph. Everyone in the stadium was hushed and quiet thinking the same thing, "Did I just see what I think I saw? Wow?!"

Basemonkey...so are we talking of a Rick Ankiel like cannon?
Posted by: mtzxc | December 02, 2008 at 11:51 PM
"of a Rick Ankiel like cannon?"
comparable
"players like markakis should only be playing for the yanks, sox or cubs! how dare the orioles even bother?"
well, If Angelos gives him market value like he deserves, there won't be a problem

Not too concerned, though I'm eager to see this thing get done. The O's know how important Markakis is to their rebuilding effort and will do what it takes to lock him up. Not much more to add to what's already been said. Markakis is easily one of the better young players in the game as well as one of the best all around talents, young or old. To do what he's done before turning 25 is impressive enough; it should be fun to watch him over the next eight to ten years, as he really hits his prime. For all the misery O's fans have endured over the past decade, it seems we're finally beginning to make some progress. With Markakis and Jones already in the fold, Wieters on the way, and several interesting pitchers- Tillman, Matusz, Arrieta, and Erbe among them- almost ready, I like where we're headed. Now, if we can just convince Bud Selig to move us- illogically, but helpfully- to the AL Central or even the NL East, we might compete at some point over the next ten years!!! Ugh.

Oh, and as for Markakis' 'cannon'...this stat may be helpful: he led the AL- and all of baseball- in outfield assists last year. For what it's worth.

Ankiel is a good comp. Both guys were pitchers at some point in their careers, Ankiel most notably so. Both feature high accuracy mid 90s throws with excellent carry on the fly.
In the AL the other great arms are Vlad, Vernon Wells, and Alex Rios. Who might be those guys in the NL? I heard Francoeur, Hawpe, and Andruw are guys of note.
For those of us who have played baseball, the biggest thing about receiving balls from very strong arms is that it actually whistles differently in a high pitch. From the stands, you can also tell by what it does once it bounces. Average throws tend to die. Strongest throws seem to gain speed after they hit.

I'm glad to see markakis getting the praise he deserves from everyone hear.. It will be awesome to have jones and markakis patrolling our outfield for the next decade... I must say I like where we are headed
