« Yankees Rumors: Burnett, Sabathia, Pettitte | Main | Odds and Ends: Renteria, Burnett, Delmon »
10:43pm: Reds GM Walt Jocketty says that even with the Lincoln signing he still hopes to sign David Weathers. Four or five other teams are said to be in the mix for Stormy. We'll know by midnight Sunday whether Weathers will accept the Reds' offer of arbitration.
3:49pm: La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Twins were "hot after" Lincoln and were "barely outbid" by the Reds. The Twins weren't in on Bob Howry though.
12:43pm: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Reds re-signed reliever Mike Lincoln to a two-year deal worth $4MM plus incentives. Lincoln, 34 in April, posted a 4.48 ERA in 70.1 innings this year. His command was respectable, though he was prone to the longball. It was an impressive comeback from two Tommy John surgeries.

Tim,
Do you think the Reds will let Weathers walk now? Sign a lefty and go with younger options for the bullpen?

And I was hoping the Mets would sign him. Damn...LOL.

this signing is ok. id take lincoln over weathers. id rather have the pick for weathers. lincoln was ok last year but kinda hit a wall toward the end of the year.

I understand 2 years, but 4 mil seems awfully high for a guy who has not put back to back seasons together his entire career.
Cordero, Burton, Bray, Lincoln, and Massett now make up the pen. Another lefty is an obvious need, but Weathers is now excess if you plan on using any of the young guys-Roenicke, Ramirez, Herrera, Fisher, or Manuel-at all.

Eh... do we really need to be signing mediocre relievers to 2-year deals?
This did not turn out well with Mike Stanton (who, admittedly, was *40* at the time).

the mets could have used him last year instead of him being with cincy when david wright had the bases loaded and lincoln threw that nasty curve in there for strike 3 and made wright look dumb

Yuck.

yuck ? hahaha ill take lincoln at 2 years 2 million moer than trading a young stud prospect for kevin freaking gregg
yuck

Calm down there partner.

But I do agree, Wright looked like a chump during that at bat. I remember that game clearly and I remember Keith Hernandez saying right before the 3-2 pitch that Lincoln better not throw Wright a curveball unless he wanted to get hurt. That didn't work out well.

Why does everyone have to get super defensive about their teams? It's not a good signing. Neither was the Gregg trade. At least I can admit when our team makes a mistake.
Also look into grammar. It's a beautiful thing.

Also Kevin Gregg is light years ahead of Mike Lincoln. But I'm not about to turn this into a LOL @ UR TEAM discussion. I just don't think investing 2 years at a decent salary into a guy who has had not great numbers and injury problems is a good idea.

lincoln is not the best reliever but you gotta look at it from the reds point of view. weathers is a fa. affledt is gone. lincoln is a free agent. you couldnt let all 3 leave so sign lincoln and let affledt and weathers walk and get the picks for them. its not the best signing in the world but i understand where the reds were coming from in signing him
Posted by: redsfan | December 04, 2008 at 04:13 PM
and even though he was prone to the longball he has a very good ground ball rate and playing in great american small park thats never a bad thing
Posted by: redsfan | December 04, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Lincoln.
Better than Todd Coffey and Gary Majewski.
At least with his Curve Ball he gives opposing batters something different to look at and think about.

One more thing. I like David Weathers but I like this signing better than either bringing 40 year old Weathers back on a two year deal or signing 39 year old Arthur Rhodes to be a situational Lefty out of the Pen
For both of those guys, can you say Rheal Cormier or Mike Stanton?
Posted by: ctownboy | December 04, 2008 at 04:33 PM
thank god now the Reds dont have to sign Weathers
Posted by: joeyvotto | December 04, 2008 at 05:59 PM
As a Reds fan I like this signing. Lincoln might have the best curveball in baseball, and is pretty unhittable against lefties.
He kinda feel off a cliff at the end of the year, probably due to fatigue. Which probably won't happen next year.

If the Reds can't get a Quality left hand reliever signed,I still think Stormy would be a good signing. Just don't let him pitch in the eighth or ninth innings or let him pitch with inherited runners. Also "joeyvotto" how do feel about giving up 1st base and going to left field if the right handed bat the reds get is a 1st baseman?
