Joel Sherman of the New York Post says Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel is popular, with at least five interested teams. He adds the Yankees, Rays, and Giants to the previously known Braves. With the lack of center fielders on the market, the interest makes sense. Sherman says the Cardinals seek a closer and/or a starter, and have some interest in Ian Kennedy.

I'd love the Giants to find a way to fit Ankiel in; he'd be a great center fielder at PacBell. But I just don't know how these teams match up. You couldn't deal Sanchez for one year of Ankiel. You'd have to sign him long-term as part of the trade, and good luck with that if his agent's Borass.

Now, why is no one asking for the Twins' Carlos Gomez or Denard Span since there are not many CFs available?
Gomez has a pretty good upside and Span showed last year that he may just be more than a Quadruple-A player after all.

Ankiel would be a really bad fit for the Yanks. No speed, low batting avg, low obp and poor defensively. Other than HR what does he offer that we don't already get from Melky (everyone's favorite AAAA CF)? Plus why trade Ian Kennedy for a 1 year rental now? You're better off holding on to him and letting him re-establish his value in the minors. Or at least see what pans out in FA and set up your own staff first.

I'm surprised the Rays don't get in on this. They have starting pitching surplus to send, and need another big bat and a corner outfielder. Ankiel solves all their problems and can be had for what they're looking to deal... how have they not talked about this?
Sonnastine (who is cost controlled for 5 more seasons) and a low level prospect for Ankiel would be a fair deal IMO.

Ankiel is "poor defensively"? Guy has one of the best outfield arms in the business, crashes into walls to make ridiculous catches, and will only continue to improve his angles.

Glad to see Mo is going after something of value with his surplus of outfielders (Ank, Luddy, Schu, Rasmus, Mather, Barton, Dunc)...
Trading Ankiel is preferrible for the Cards b/c he is a yr away from free agency. Obviously, this is a downside for potential buyers. The lack of quality cf on the market may negate this downside.
I am fascinated with Kennedy, but what about Cano? Any thoughts on what it may take to get him?
With one of the Cards' needs being 2b, Cano would be nice.

"No speed"-- seriously lack of knowledge here.

Ankiel is a total 1/2 yr wonder.

I totally agree w/Chief Tomahawk. Ankiel will be lucky to hit .265. 2 "SportsCenter" throws DO NOT MAKE a good defensive outfielder. He takes a terrible approach to the ball more often than not. Fielding %age was only .968 with 8 ERRORS AND 4 ASSISTS. Compare that to Ludwick and Schumaker who had indentical fielding %ages of .990, 3 errors and 13 assists. PLUS Ankiel is a BOROS boy. Needless to say, I'd trade!!!

Bad defensively? No speed? man you've really never seen this guy play have you? As a Yankee fan I'd love to get Ankiel. Very athletic, max effort guy still with a lot of upside. Great arm that can save at least a run a game. I don't think and hope they would not think about giving up Cano. I think he will have a big year.

Yea, you're pretty much wrong on everything... Ankiel has above average speed, is a pretty good defender and hits for a decent average. His .818 OPS is something else you won't get from Melky.

Dear YanksFanSince78,
You have got to out of your mind for saying Rick Ankiel is a poor defensive player! He has one of the top 3 arms in the league, I believe he has the best considering i'm a cards fan but the only other 2 players that have a better arm is Iricho and Jeff Francouer. I would also except Vlad but your still crazy for thinking he is a sub par player!

Wow i should have cont. reading these so called baseball fan posts. you guys really have nevered watched him play NO ONE WOULD RUN ON ANKIEL AFTER THOSE 4 ASSISTS which came early in the season
Ankiel a poor defensive player.... HAHAHAHAHA

Yanksfansince78... you are an idiot. I dont believe you have ever seen Ankiel play at all. Ankiel may not have edmonds range, but his arm in the outfeild is probably the best in the NL or AL. Im a cards fan and last year in one game he threw out a baserunner on 2 from the warning track, and a few innings later he threw another guy on 2 trying to tag up to third out from right center on the warning track. Yankee fan, dont comment on these things.

btw.. when did the yankees start caring about throwing money away? one year rental is probably a better investment than spending 300+ million ( which is sickening ) on CC and AJ

im a yankee fan and i think ankiel is a perfect fit for them
