Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder is close to finalizing a three-year contract extension with Arizona, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.
Snyder, 28 in February, hit .237 with 16 homers and 64 RBI in 2008.
A baseball source said late last week that the final details were being worked out, and Snyder would then take a physical before the contract is signed, Gilbert wrote.
Gilbert spoke with Diamondbacks starting pitcher Brandon Webb about Snyder's new deal.
"Having 'Snydes' behind the plate for the next two years will be great," said Webb, who is under contract through next season with an option for 2010.
MLBTR posted reports about the possible extension on Dec. 23.

Imagine what his numbers would have been if he hadn't fractured a testicle...

I guess he's not coming back to Arizona...

The Webb comment must be a bit scary for the D'Backs. If he does leave, the Dodgers really should jump all over him, as he is essentially a younger version of Derek Lowe.
As for Snyder, this is an excellent move. He is a very good defender who makes his pitchers comfortable and puts up an excellent OBP with some pop. What is not to like in a day and age where such complete packages are hard to find outside of the 3 M's

Brandon Webb has frequently stated that he loves playing in Arizona, and that Arizona is his first choice for the team he wants to play for. On the contrairy to what every one on this forum thinks of Webby's statement. That may actually be a good sign for the D-Backs. Webby has also stated that he is in no finacial trouble and isn't looking to break the bank on his next contract. Remember he was ready to sign a $54 Million dollar extention earlier this year, but discussions ended. The D-Backs know they can't afford to give a huge contract. So they could be trying to appeal to Webb's desire to stay in AZ. Snyder and Webb are good friends so this could be a move to make Webby think twice before leaving. Now Josh Byrens needs to pull his head out of his ass and re-open negotiations.
