klit kommander:
jeez, you want sheets to be your 5th starter? you yankees fans are so selfish. you already have CC and A.J
you think MLB is the yankees and everyone else.

Heck, I wish the Braves would sign Sheets if the money's right. Apparently we're not gonna get a left fielder so I'd hope for a rotation of Sheets, Lowe, Vasquez, Jurrjens, and Kawakami could hold the fort down and hope we can put enough runs on the board.

bobby, wren is waiting out the market until guys like dunn and abreu are willing to take a 1 year deal

If the Braves were to go after Sheets would their 7th overall first round draft pick still be protected? I know the Dodgers don't get the pick for Lowe (Type A) because it is protected, but can they continue to sign as many Type A FAs without surrendering anything other than a 2nd round and compensation pick? If this is the case, the Braves have the money why wouldn't they roll the dice on Sheets especially with Hudson coming off the DL in the 2nd half.
Personally, I think Sheets is worth the risk for any team. He has to accept a 2year incentive laden contract and his upside is huge. If he would have been healthy all year in 2008 I'm convinced he would have been picked up by the Yanks rather than AJ (let's be honest, Sheets is a better pitcher). I would love to see him in Dodger Blue next year but we all know that ain't gonna happen! Damn Colletti and McCourts!

Bravesfan, I hope you're right. For the life of me, I don't know why Dunn's name hasn't been thrown around more. Though I'm sure his wanting $15mill/year may have something to do with that. And I think a 2 year deal would be better than a 1 year deal. Heyward is at least 2 years out. And I'd rather not have this same dilemma again next offseason.

and while reading carfado's article, there was a "glimmer of hope", you could even say a gleam in my eye, about lugo's hopeful "commitment" of wanting to, and preparing to be the starting SS. i think lowrie is best suited as the inf utility man.
i can honestly see lugo putting up a .265/8hr/60rbi/30sb season.
now if Mlb allows him to use one of those oversized "novelty" gloves (think of the bugs bunny cartoon), i think he will be alllllllllllllllright.

I wish the Cubs would take a stab at Sheets. I know he is a risk, but again high risk, high reward. They have Marshall to take spot starts. I say why not...
Posted by: Bleacher_Buddha | January 18, 2009 at 01:10 PM
If the Braves could pick up Sheets, WOAH! That would be a rotation.
Lowe
Jurrjens
Sheets
Vazquez/Hudson
Kawakami/Vazquez
Tommy Hanson could spend a whole year in the minors again! That would be amazing. With a power hitter in OF and if Frenchy can get to normal, we could make a big run.

Snow? what the heck is snow? its 85 degrees in Los Angeles today.
Kris Benson really? wy is Colletti loading up the rotation with Kids and hasbeens? and never was?
Posted by: MannyWood99 | January 18, 2009 at 01:13 PM
Yeah the Braves 1st rounder is protected regardless. If they sign another Type A, they just have to give up their 3rd in addition to the 2nd they're already giving up. I don't see anyway the Braves go after Sheets though. At this point, it appears he still wants a lot of guaranteed money, even on a one year deal with incentives. His upside isn't worth 10 million guaranteed if you think there's a good chance he's going to need surgery at some point, at least it wouldn't be to a team like the Braves that needs hitting more than pitching at this point.
Posted by: nixa37 | January 18, 2009 at 01:13 PM
I would only sign Sheets if after I thought my medical people say it is worth the risk, could get an incentive contract and already had 5 starters in place.
Posted by: studio179 | January 18, 2009 at 01:14 PM
if the rangers blow it and don't sign sheets i'm gonna be severely bummed.
but then again, i guess i shouldn't get my hopes up.

"if the rangers blow it and don't sign sheets i'm gonna be severely bummed."
The Rangers aren't going to contend in 2009 anyway. There is zero need for them to waste a 2nd round pick in signing a player to a 1 year deal. Sheets won't push the Rangers to contention with the rest of that rotation. Wait till Feliz, Holland, and Main are ready, then go after some good pitchers to back them.

The Mariners-Varitek thing makes some sense, if Jeff Clement is going to be shifted to a full-time 1B/DH type. Which would make sense if that knee injury is recurring.
Posted by: melonis rex | January 18, 2009 at 01:37 PM
"I would only sign Sheets if after I thought my medical people say it is worth the risk, could get an incentive contract and already had 5 starters in place."
And that is exactly why the A's should sign him.
-Protected first rounder.
-Already have 5+ MLB-caliber starters in place in Duchscherer, Gallagher, Eveland, Braden, Outman, and Gonzalez along with other guys who could be up later in the season. AKA if Sheets gets hurt, someone will be taking his place. There is enough depth to survive both a Sheets injury and an injury to another pitcher in the rotation, especially when you incorporate guys who could be called up mid season (Anderson).
-Main need is for that frontline punch to go along with Duke.

Glavine said if I can't sign with the Braves I will retire.

Not bad Varitek signs with Seattle, get 51st pick and supplemental. Good to go.
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 18, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Mariners already have Johjima and his 3/24m deal doesn't even start until 2009. Find it hard that Seattle would sign 'Tek for a couple million even with Johjima around and he's pretty much untradeable after the horriffic 2008 season offensively and several pitchers not wanting to pitch to him with his pitch calling abilities being called into question.
Posted by: johns | January 18, 2009 at 02:40 PM
"Glavine said if I can't sign with the Braves I will retire.

Smoltz said he would wait until late winter to discuss a contract with the Braves. Now Smoltz has already signed with another team that threw him a lot of green.
Welcome to the club.
Posted by: BobbyCocks | January 18, 2009 at 03:09 PM
Why at Glavine's age would he entertain an offer from Washington?!!?
Don't lose him too, Wren
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 03:11 PM
The Mariners advisors should be fired for this suggestion......especially if they are still the same advisors who suggested giving Kenji Johjima that massive extension when Jeff Clement was just around the corner.
So now these "advisors" are suggesting the M's carry Varitek/Johjima and Clement?
I guess having Varitek hit .220 would make having Johjima hit .230 look more appealing but other then that this is just ridiculous.
If the M's want someone to help them with their pitching staff they should hire a really good pitching coach, not devote another roster spot to a catcher all the while blocking Clement further.
Unless of course someone can think of some miracle trade the M's could work out where someone would actually take Johjima and his contract?

We'd take Ichiro..haha..might have to give up AAA bench and AA bullpen but we'd take him..lol
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 18, 2009 at 03:56 PM
Dunn to the braves sounds like a good idea at first. Sure he's going to give you 40 HR a year which the Braves need, but he is well below average in the field and with fielders like Johnson, McCann, and Diaz the Braves can't weaken their defense anymore. Plus some people call his attitude in to question and we all know Bobby "crusty pants" Cox will have none of that. But finally Dunn strikes out more than any other batter and Braves fans all know that striking out is Jeff Francoeur's Job.

"with fielders like Johnson, McCann, and Diaz the Braves can't weaken their defense anymore."
Haha, what? Diaz is a great LF.
Posted by: iamnobody | January 18, 2009 at 04:31 PM
Bravesfan, I really don't see where Glavine fits into the rotation right now. Sure he'd be nice to have around for when someone gets hurt, but I think I'd rather have Campillo or Morton as a 5th instead of Glavine. I don't like having 5 righties in the rotation but Glavine pretty much sucked last year.

"Unless of course someone can think of some miracle trade the M's could work out where someone would actually take Johjima and his contract?"
This is 1 guy whom a Lugo for him deal would be bad from the Sox perspective, if his game calling is as bad as Bedard and Silva said it was. Recall Bedard saying over the summer that he was tipping location as well as being un familiar with pitches each starter had which is inexcusable from a catcher.
Posted by: johns | January 18, 2009 at 04:55 PM
""with fielders like Johnson, McCann, and Diaz the Braves can't weaken their defense anymore.""
McCann is just fine defensively as a catcher. Nice how you pick the Braves' worst defenders to cherry pick. Kotchman is one of the best defensive 1B in the game, Escobar is a very good defensive SS, and Chipper is still a plus defender at 3B.
The ATL defense is average to above average.

Has Cafardo joined Heyman in working for Boras? Varitek to the Mariners ain't gonna happen.

cutme: "I would love to see him in Dodger Blue next year but we all know that ain't gonna happen! Damn Colletti and McCourts!"
Are Dodgers fans the biggest whiners in baseball, or what? Every Dodgers-related thread has at least one fan biatching about how cheap Frank McCourt is, when the Dodgers outspend every other team in their division by more than $40M.
In 2008 they were 3rd in the NL in spending, only $60K behind the Cubs.
They were $15M behind the top payroll in the league. As compared to the "free spending Red Sox" who were also in third place, more than $75M behind the top spenders in the AL.
Posted by: Little Bear | January 18, 2009 at 05:27 PM
Varitek in Seattle makes no sense. Seattle is already over loaded in potential players behind the plate: Johjima was signed to a three year extension last year; Clement, Johnson, and even Moore are all young catchers with promise and are all going ot be at Spring training. And as if that wasn't enough the M's resigned veteran Burke who will also be at spring training. The M's need Left Handed Power and Varitek is the complete opposite, while Boras being his agent doesn't help at all he is still asking for big money I just don't see this either happening or being a positive move for Seattle.

we are complaining because we had something like 60 mill come off the books this offseason. We lost our Ace and our number 2, hoping that with 60 MM off the books we would land one of the top SP on the market, but didnt make an offer to either SP. (CC and AJ) We have signed 3 free agents and of the 60 MM off the books, its January and we have spent 17.5 mill of the 60 we have to spend. Our rotation as of right now with Billingsley, Kuroda, Kershaw, McDonald has a grand total of 4 years of Major League experience, Billingsley has 3 of those years.
Our payroll was 120 MM last year, if we sign Manny it will be about 100 MM, without Manny it was end up about 80 MM. We are frustrated because we have money to spend, and our owners wont spend the money we have. Theyd rather spend it on 50 little league fields.

I remember when Seatle was supposed to compete with the Angles for the AL West.
Sexson- lost his power stroke and contact
Beltre- down season offensively
Johjima- just lost it.
Ichiro- down season in average and homeruns for him.
Silva- just utterly terrible in every apsect.
Putz- his era was over double it was in 2007.
Batista- horrifiic
Talk about everything going wrong for a team.

I love how all these reports that Seattle advisers are talking about Varitek are coming out of Boston. Not once has anything about Varitek-to-Seattle speculation come from Seattle, the first place it should come from...
""We'd take Ichiro..haha..might have to give up AAA bench and AA bullpen but we'd take him..lol""
So an AAA bench player and an AA bullpen pitcher will net you Ichiro? You'd be lucky to get a back-end of the rotation starter for that...

What would anybody say with the Braves getting garret anderson for cheap and platoon him and diaz in left.
Posted by: MVP#10 | January 18, 2009 at 10:24 PM
uh, Baseballismylf4, I think he meant the WHOLE AAA bench and the WHOLE AA bullpen.

Boston sportswriters are bad, only one I like is Steve Buckley.
Do they go to the can with Varitek and wipe his butt, after a dump?
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 19, 2009 at 06:23 AM
I don't like NY sports writers that much either, even though I am a yankee fan. But I just cannot stand Tony Massarotti. God, if the Redsox miss out on one guy he talks about it for the next month or so.
