Cubs' New Owner Might Push For Peavy

Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, Ill.) believes a new Chicago Cubs owner might increase general manager Jim Hendry's payroll budget, which would make room to acquire Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres. Especially if that new owner is Tom Ricketts.

Ricketts will want to win and win fast, so if it's him and it happens soon his first call might be to GM Jim Hendry with the news that he can up the payroll and get Peavy out of San Diego, Rozner writes.

Ricketts is the CEO of a Chicago investment bank named Incapital. Rozner wrote that Ricketts is a local guy who loves the Cubs and will have only their "best interests at heart. He even, reportedly, met his wife in the bleachers at Wrigley."

Peavy has been the subject of trade rumors since the offseason began, and the Cubs have been mentioned often in the same sentence.

And let the sighs begin....

Say it with me: The Cubs don't have the prospects to pull off a Peavy trade.

What this article fails to mention is that the Padres are going to have a new owner too, Jeff Moorad, and he probably won't want to trade Peavy.

True, but they have already shown (DeRosa trade) they are willing to move MLB players...they would take another team into the negotiations

SCREW PEAVY! I am so sick of seeing his name all the time. The guy is a work of art. Did I mention SCREW PEAVY?!

"True, but they have already shown (DeRosa trade) they are willing to move MLB players...they would take another team into the negotiations"

DeRosa was their best opportunity to get at least one knockout prospect to flip in a Peavy trade. Hendry failed miserably, trading DeRo for scraps.

Who else on the team:

1. does NOT have a large contract/commitment

2. would fetch a top prospect or two.

Oh, and 3)could easily be replaced within the Cubs organization... aka is in a position of depth.

Yeah I don't see the prospects in the Cubs system to pull off the trade.

Someone should tell the new ower, whoever it is.

Wow. Thats good to hear, not just relating to Peavy but just in general that money shouldnt be an issue. But considering Bradley is only making 7 million this season (the signing bonus was split between the first two years) we should have room to add a pitcher still.

the rumor is like a cockroach, it never dies!!!!!!!

Can we just get a owner first? And then go from there. Jumping way ahead of ourselves by saying what a potential owner is going to do. once again hes not even the owner yet.

I thought Towers said in vegas that the two teams has the players in place for a deal? So how do the cubs not have the players. I personally dont think they do either, but if Towers thinks they do, do our opinions really matter?

George is getting angry!!!

/C'mon Cubbies

SSDD!!!1!!!one!!!1!

This rumor is not going to go away until Jake makes his first start of the season.

and what if a new Padres owner would push to keep Peavy?

melonis rex they definately have the players to pull of the peavy deal. vitters marshall indians prospects cedeno how is that not enough?? and there others besides them.

Die Peavy Rumors Die.

Or.... he is traded

For the love of God, is this Peavy stuff EVER going to end?

I'm not drinking the Cub kool aid in 2009. Zambrano's arm is not going to hold up, Harden's arm is very unlikely to hold up, Dempster will probably be more of a 4 ERA guy than an ace.

The rotation just isn't going to hold up, so trading for Peavy probably makes some sense for them.

The moves they have done so far haven't really improved the team though imo. The problem wasn't 'righties' ate them up in the playoffs, it was that they stunk in the playoffs period. The Cubs had a very even splits last year, they hit righties just fine on the season.

Yeah I agree even as a Mets fan that a Cubs/Yanks world series would be the highest rated WS of all time. Does anyone know what the lowest one of all time is?

Cardinals/Tigers. Actually Im just making that up. I remember being at the bar and going oh...theres baseball on. Just seemed that no one cared to watch. Couldnt tell you what was actually the lowest rated but that one just was a bore to me. And its not because im a cubs fan either.

Actually from what I just read it was the 2000 World Series. Mets/Yanks. Which makes sense because its all New York. No one else outside of New York cared.

"^ thats what's good for baseball and not all this salary cap jabber"

MLB got plenty of profits in '08, even if the WS got "low ratings." I agree with you on the salary cap though.

"Does anyone know what the lowest one of all time is? "

Does it matter?

Seriously. The WS should be about the two best teams, not the two that will draw the most ratings.

Stop b!tching about ratings.

Hmm I could be wrong. I also just read it could have been last years WS that was the least watched. Usually the WS is about the two hottest teams that made it in the playoffs. Not necessarily the best two teams

If a new owner, such as Rickets does make a push for Peavy financially, meaning the 2010 payroll and then some probably, what else could he do to help the deal progress? I mean, if he came out and said "Hey Jim, go give Towers 2million more in that deal you had worked out" do you think thats really gonna be the difference?

Art,

ANY World Series with the Cubs would be the highest rated World Series of all time, obviously! That would be global. Doesn't matter who they play. Everyone has seen the Yankees play B4.

Henryrowengartner -- sigh all you want. Apart from Brian Roberts (so far) Hendry has acquired a lot of great players that you probably sighed about before: Rich Harden, Milton Bradley. Peavy is expensive for the Padres and wants to pitch for the Cubs. Also, if it makes you sigh, why read and comment on every single Cubs/Peavy post? Why not focus on some of the other great articles on MLBTradeRumors.

Also I vote for Tom Ricketts!

tolo316, Henry, et al:

Will you eat your crow, & your humble pie, if Peavy is acquired? or will you just disappear?

I see this as the only way the Cubs aquire Peavy. The new owner will have to come out and tell Hendry not just that he has the money to do it but that he wants to mortgage the future of the team for a better chance to win now.

"This rumor is not going to go away until Jake makes his first start of the season."

Too bad the rumors for him being traded at the deadline will start then!!

i just want this whole peavy thing to be over. what i actually hope for the padres is that they get a new owner who wants to win now and he goes out and gets some rotation help for Peavy and Young and shores up that bullpen to make them somewhat of a competitor.

if they go out and get say Garland and Wolf they will have a solid rotation and especially if the mets sign Perez and Redding and the Braves looking like they might sign Lowe the Dodgers rotation wont be as deep with just Bills, Kuroda, and Kershaw unless im missing something

Yea the Stankees may be able to top any offer but this isn't Free Agency. It's a trade and if you haven't noticed...He doesn't want to play for your team! If it's not the Cubs then he will be a Padre. It's simple as that.

On baseball-almanac.com they list the WS ratings since 1968. Last years Ray's-Phillies matchup was the lowest of all-time with a rating of 8.4, a 14% share, and 13,635,000 viewers. 1980's match-up of the Phillies-Royals rated the highest with a 32.8 rating, a 56% share, and 42,300,000 viewers.

They could trade Ramirez for a whole SLEW of prospects, but then of course they have no 3B. :)

No no no. You got me all wrong. Just on the previous post about peavy (the 43 of them). Everyone always just hates these posts. My first comment was anticipation for people to whine and cry about the Peavy rumors. Im a cubs fan and want Peavy just as bad as anyone. I was not the one sighing. I was anticipating everyone elses complaints. I want a owner now so we can move forward and make moves without having the burden of empty ownership to hold the cubs down

Too bad the rumors for him being traded at the deadline will start then!!

At least they may calm down once he has a set jersey on for the time being. Instead of offseason grumble of everyone guessing.

So the Cubs may have some more money to spend under new ownership... great! But as the Yankees and also the Cubs have proved, money does not buy championships. Someone needs to tell Hendry that when you've got the money to spend on the best player available, make sure you don't spend it on the most over-hyped player available. *cough* Soriano *cough*

theres a whole bunch of cub haters in here. pretty funny to me as a cub fan seeing that even when we lose in the 1st round everyone still is hating. as for peavy would love to get him in the real blue. win now is a reasonable philosophy espcially since its wide open even with the yankmees spending half a billion on dollars. we proved we can make the playoffs now we gotta win a series or 3 while were in there and peavy will drastically help with that as long as dempster doesnt get the game 1 start

Sorry Henry for misunderstanding your post!

Well Peavy would not be a waste of money. Jake is a stud and has proved it. So by all means spend the money.

Its alright I can see how it was confusing. I probably looked like one of the frustrated people. But any Peavy talk to me is good talk.

I live in Arlington Heights, IL! Pretty sweet... Anyway, now that Cuban's out, I hope Ricketts wins the bid for the Cubs... I've heard he's the frontrunner, too.

Peavy would make the Cubs' rotation pretty amazing. Would it also clear out the farm system and the bench?

Sure, Cubs fans would love it if the trade brings in one World Championship. But if it doesn't, your roster looks pretty shabby pretty soon.

Ricketts (if he is the new owner) sounds a bit like Ted Turner before he turned the baseball operations over to Stan Kasten. Make a splash now in the hopes you can win soon, even if doing so makes little long-term sense.

melonis rex doesnt want the cubs to get peavy.but they do have the prospects.and they will be trading for him shortly.he wants to play for the cubs only.not your team melonis.kt even said recently that the braves had a great deal on the table.and the cubs had a deal in place that would fill alot of holes.he is coming to the cubs.like i have been saying all along.new owner is gonna make an instant splash.you will see, haters.

and dero netted 3 minor league arms.it was indians basically paying his full salary and here is 3 pitchers.nothing wrong with that deal.melonis,so your saying that a player like dero with that one year left on his contract,34 years old, could have netted hendry some baseball top prospect?lol, give me a breakif this was the allstar break, maybe.but right now?you cant be serious.i mean his defense was average, and i dont think he hit 30 plus hrs with 100 rbis.hendry is a great gm.period

I dont know if thats fair to say that the Peavy deal wouldnt make sense in the long run. I mean, if the Cubs DO get Peavy, they would be shoring up a spot in the rotation thats going to be vacant very soon. They have Zambrano and Dempster signed for 4+ years. Lilly is signed through 2010. Marquis was gone after this season and Harden is a free agent after this season. They dont have any REALLY big time starters that are expected to break the major league roster in the near future. The only in house options for being a #2/3 is Jeff Smardzija. But hes not even stretched out or possessing the amount of different viable pitches to use at the ML level for a starting pitcher. If they do get Peavy, which every day I'm thinking more and more they will, then they would be garunteeing that Zambrano, Peavy and Dempster fill out the 1,2,3 spots for the next 4+ years. I think that this IS a move for the long term even if it does help out in the short term.

i agree sharx,100 percent.we would have peavy for 4 years,with z and dempster.that would be fantastic.

With the Cubs payroll now at approximately $134M, with the ceiling, of, say $145M, and the ability to shed another $6M, the Cubs financially in 2009 are now able to take on Peavy's $11.5M contract and still have room to make some deals as the season starts.

In terms of talent, the Cubs can fill the holes that San Diego has - SS, CF and arms. Doesn't it seem a little wierd that the Cubs got three arms in the DeRosa deal? Hmmm...

I wouldn't put past Hendry to reduce the complexity of a 3-way or 4-way deal by executing deals individually first. This allows him time to get the approval from the new ownership as well. Lastly, I am convinced that Towers and Hendry still talk often, and Hendry has been getting the players that Towers would approve. Hendry is likely filling in the players per the framework that they have put in place during the GM meetings in December...

"Zambrano's arm is not going to hold up"

I'm glad you know that...but yeah, there is no bias there...

The Cubs window is 2 to 3 years...going for it now actually makes a lot of sense.

One more thing.

For once, the beauty of the guys that we don't need (i.e., Pie is out of options and he has been replaced by Gathright, Cedeno is out of options and he has been replaced by Miles, Wuertz is out of options and he has been replaced by other 'pen arms) are actually desired by San Diego.

And, the one hitch in the deal from December is that Towers doesn't need to assume any of Marquis' contract...

Yea, about all that garbage people have been saying with Zambrano's arm is done and 'its going to fall off' and all that, hes had one bad year injurywise. The first several years of his playing time hes been near perfect, minus a missed start once (maybe) each season for forearm cramps.

I heard of something that says if you throw a no-hitter in a season. The following season your arm will literally fall off. Its science. Nolan Ryan had robot arms. It was a risky operation but it was worth it.

The Cubs do have pieces that can get a deal done for Peavy. The Padres will want some MLB ready talent, and the Cubs need to free up space on the 40 man.

Now remember not all of these names are the most glamorous.

Rich Hill
Ronny Cedeno
Felix Pie

Those are almost guaranteed.

Then there is Jeff Stevens and Chris Archer.

We are at 5-1 already and haven't even gotten to the good talent.

Those 5 clear out the 40 man.

Then you give them a choice of one of the top 5 Cub Prospects at SS, either Hak-Ju Lee or Ryan Flaherty.

Now we have some decent talent.

Then add 2 other Cubs top 10 prospects C Wellington Castillo and RHP Andrew Cashner.

Its an 8 for 1 deal there, with a mix of MLB ready talent and young farm hands for when the Padres are actually ready to compete.

Then you have Vitters still which is probably a must so there is plenty that can be given up without giving the few guys we may need in the case of injury.

Again that is not the sexiest package of players but an 8 for 1 with salary relief and a good mix of talent I think that Towers may jump at that.

Though Rich Hill is has 15 K to 18 BB in winter ball this year with an era of 4.12. So Mitch Atkins or Justin Berg may be more enticing.

Now I am not suggesting that is the deal that gets it done. Rather I was trying to suggest some of what KT and Hendry could discuss. Personaly I think the Padres wont be fully competitive until 2011 season.

Personally this doesnt happen without Vitters.. but a guy can dream. I am still content with the team as is.

Lets get out to Wrigley crack a few Old Styles, grabe a nice chicago dog, and root root root for the home team.

"theres a whole bunch of cub haters in here. pretty funny to me as a cub fan seeing that even when we lose in the 1st round everyone still is hating."

Actually, it's more a function of most people that are tired of the ridiculous trades Cubs fans have dreamed up re: Peavy and Roberts. And the always glorious Peavy/Roberts combo trades. But then again, it's not just Cubs fans, it's every fan that proposes some ridiculous trade proposal and is CONVINCED that the 45th best prospect in their system is going to land them Peavy/ A-Rod/ Greinke/ Halladay, etc.
The problem is that the Roberts and Peavy trades have been on this site so much, and so many "trades" have been concocted that are just idiotic that people are sick of it. It's hatred for every fan who 1)doesn't know what they're talking about 2)thinks they'll get any player handed to them and 3)refuses to discuss rationally what might happen in the real world.
Since this Peavy trade has been beat to death, brought back to life, then beat down again, no one wants to hear another 500 Cubs fans trade posts.
Although, I think my new favorite ridiculous trade was proposed by a Yankee fan last night I believe where Nady would land the Homer Bailey and Drew Stubbs, which were then packaged for Greinke. Or the Yankee fans who claim they're guaranteed to get Peavy when there's been no discussion of that happening over the past 2 months.

So it's not just you Cub fans. It's all dumb fans. Every team has them. Most of us wish they'd stop posting, regardless of team affiliation.

Well now that you got that off your chest. crack open a beverage and give a yee haw to the Shawn Estes signing. This is what the site is for. Idiots like myself to babble on about rumors that are floating around the MLB. Regardless of what one guy says on here it doesnt make a lick of difference on whats going to actually happen. 75% of these posts are ludicrous. But once again they affect nothing to the actual MLB world. So let fans be fans (idiots or not) and let manny be manny.

Well put DodgersBruin.

And really Nady for Bailey/Stubbs who were flipped for Grinke? Wow..

Thanks Henry.. I like being a fan. :-)

BTW I would be manny for 1 mil per year, and I would be willing to do a 1 year deal too.. and would not ask for a no trade clause. But I would need a pair of those sunglasses with the built in MP3 player like him.

Bleacher Buddha Cashner cant be traded until june and i believe there is a limit on how long you can wait for a PTBNL

Bleacher_Buddha:

Good post. I don't think Archer is on the 40-man roster, though. If possible, find a way not to part with Marshall (great swing man in our 'pen), Vitters (our #1 prospect in our organization), or Castillo.

chicubs25: I believe the waiting period for a PTBNL is 90 days...

Bleacher Buddha,

Here's my question. Say the Cubs were rebuilding and were going to trade a stud player to rebuild, let's say Aramis Ramirez. You can be offered a 5,6,7 or 8 for 1 trade that would give you guys good enough to be in the major leagues, but no one with the potential to be a star down the road. Would you make that trade? Trade a top player for a bunch of league average guys?

I think that to acquire a Cy Young winner, you have to give up at least one player with the possibility of being a star. Vitters could be that guy, but he's so far away from the big leagues, he could easily be nothing. And I'm rooting for the kid. He went to my high school, and is better than the last time the Cubs drafted a kid from my old high school back in 2002.

sharx- I think what he was sayong was vitters, marshall, and castillo would hurt the future at 3rd SP and 1st/catcher.
Also, if he does buy the Cubs, anyone think since teh window is 2-3 years that the cubs will wait to sign roberts and the offseason next year and only lose one draft pick instead of six players? Tim has said that the O's and Roberts are really close on an extension and he feels like they promised to build around him and he wants to play for a contender soon and obviously the O's are not contending for at least 2-3 years.

DB: I think Vitters is that guý. Pie, given a chance to play everyday, could be, too. If they are patient with Hill, who knows.

I think the hang up was Towers really wanted Marshall in the deal.

Bobbyp: I thought Roberts wasn't listening to the O's extension?!?

Bobbyp: I thought Roberts wasn't listening to the O's extension?!?

it is gonna happen.patience.i too believe hendry and kt have been having discussions all along.this will get done.

and roberts isnt going to be an O in 2010.not a chance.they have a few more years b4 they even sniff contending in the al beast.

Bobbyp: I thought Roberts wasn't listening to the O's extension?!?

initram- according to Tim here there is a link that says something about htat . If you go to orioles rumors it is Orioles Rumors: Roberts, Uehara, Zaun, Pudge. It says Dan Connolly says the Orioles offered Brian Roberts a multiyear extension at about $10MM per, but the two sides have not made progress and Roberts doesn't want talks dragging into the season. Andy MacPhail said he hasn't had trade talks for Roberts for at least a month.
This was January7th

I agree with DodgersBruin about needing to get some sort of star caliber potential player in a deal for a star or ace. The difference here is that the Padres are not only rebuilding but trying to cut salary (maybe not if their new owner is willing to spend money). That was one of the reasons Towers was/is dealing from a touch position. He is the person with the need. He needs to dump Peavy's salary while the Cubs getting Peavy would be a luxury. I have a feeling why that can or will skew the deal in the Cubs direction. If the Cubs end up with Peavy they may not have to give up as much as you might think. I still think Vitters would have to be included along with Pie, Cedeno and maybe one or two of the pitchers from the Derosa trade or Hart. Just remember that Hendry is the one with the most leverage in these talks.

"tough" sorry!! dang fat fingers!!

I am going out on a limb here a little. I will guarantee that Marshall will not be traded or included in any trade even if it is for a Peavy or a Roberts. Both Lou and Hendry know how important he is to the staff. He gives you quality depth in the rotation and in the bullpen. And he is left handed. I can’t think of many 26-27 year old pitchers you can say that about.

"I heard of something that says if you throw a no-hitter in a season. The following season your arm will literally fall off. Its science. Nolan Ryan had robot arms. It was a risky operation but it was worth it."

Henry,
Pure gold my friend. Nobody appreciates a perfectly placed movie quote drop as much as I.

Anyway, it's been a long day so I'm gonna go grow me some antlers and feed my lion. I may be back....if I remember.

Hmmm.... Peavy, Big Z, Halladay, Dempster, Harden. All I can say is WOW! Talk about an intimidating rotation.

Whats the deal with Halladay anyway? I'm assuming he's free agent next year? If not there would be no way the Cubs would have enough farm IF they actually do land Peavy. Also, you gotta wonder how much Halladays got left. I know he's been a frickin' horse for several years now, throwing Sabathia-like complete games. I would love to see him in Chicago, but I'd hate to have another iffy arm under a huge contract. I wonder if his arm is going to fall off too?

I do like the way you think, gunsnascar. My fingers are crossed for that one, although they may cramp considerably by then.

Go Cubs!

"I do like the way you think, gunsnascar."

Except for the Harden signing an extension for a reliever role. Thats completely absurd in this point of his career, so I'll assume your joking. IF (yes it's a big if) Harden stays reasonably healthy (180ish innings), I say say he should get an incentive laden 2-3 year extension. He is still young and LIGHTS OUT when healthy. Why in the world would you dump a healthy Harden? That's why I included him in the rotation with Halladay.

1st off Halladay would be the #1 for the cubs if he was there. Yes over Peavy and Zambrano.

Also while Halladay has pitched a lot of innings he doesn't throw a lot of pitches/innings. Also he's not exactly a flame thrower I wouldn't worrie about his arm.

Also

"throwing Sabathia-like complete games."

I think you mean Sabathia throws Halladay-like complete games. Also don't forget Sabathia was not that great last season until he went to the NL, while Halladay was in the AL east lets see how many complete games Sabathia throws this season.

I didn't mean to list the rotation from best to worst. I agree Halladay would be the ace over BigZ, but Peavy is arguable (not that I'm gonna, cuz it doesn't matter).

"I think you mean Sabathia throws Halladay-like complete games."

Fair enough, but they are both freaks of nature. I'd take Halladay over Sabathia ANY DAY with out a second thought though. And as long as were talking about worn out arms, C.C. might be a candidate soon. Talk about being used and abused! Look at what the Brewers did to him in the last month last year. It seemed like they pitched him on three days rest for 2 solid weeks! It was like renting a car for demo derby. Completely irresponsible for a team that was intending to resign him. I know he's young, but jeez.

And he did in fact eat up the NL, except the Cubs. I think they gave him his only 2 losses in the NL last year (other than playoffs). No real point,it just makes me smile.

Did you watch Zambrano pitch last year? His arm slot kept getting lower and lower and lower. He even missed time because of arm issues and he has put a lot of pitches on his arm at a young age. He is showing all the classic signs of someone headed for arm problems.

Sure he might hold out one more year and he is a horse kind of like Livan was so maybe he avoids any serious problem and just becomes a 4.50 ERA guy young like Livan did but Zambrano has most likely seen his best days already.

That isn't 'Cubs' hate, that is just someone following baseball. He is certainly on my must avoid list for my fantasy teams.

Ricketts reportedly met his wife in the bleachers at Wrigley? I guess if I was a multi-billionaire I'd be looking for a hottie in the stands as well. I already like this guy, hopefully he gets the Cubs!

As far as Peavy goes, I'm sick of hearing about it too, but certainly Towers will be open for a Vitters, Cedeno, and the three pitchers received in the DeRosa trade.

I'll stick to the deal that will I think will be the closest the Cubs will get without a 3rd team becoming involved.

Josh Vitters
Sean Marshall
Felix Pie
Sean Marshall
2 guys from the DeRosa trade
Kevin Hart or Angel Guzman

Whoops I put Marshall down twice I meant to put Ronny Cedeno. How I mixed those two names up I don't know.

BLEEDINGCUBBIEBLUE- Really, Six players for Peavy? He's good but he's not worth that much considering the Pads and Towers have virtually no leverage. Omit Marshall and we got a deal.

Here's how I see it playing out if it gets completed.

Vitters
Cedeno
Pie
Two of the top three pitchers in the DeRosa deal.

Actually, probably Hart instead of Pie since the Pads want young pitching.

The cubs need to forget about PEAVY...Instead they should go out and sign John Garland...Yes he was just ok last year, but moving him to the NL should help revitalize his career.. With none of the players really being familiar with him, and no DH...Garland is a proven winner with complete game victories in both the playoffs and the world series...Peavy has never done that...

and JOHN GARLAND does not force you to give up your future...

I'd rather see the Cubs signing Pettite. Another lefty in the rotation who's a lot better than Garland.

Rob- I would rather let marshall be the fith and sign a left for ther pen, or sign a veteran than have garland as our fifth starter

Ok, Rob, yes Peavy has never done that, but is it really fair to make that comparison? He plays for the Padres. Since hes been with the team, they've won the division a few times, but consider the division. Put him on a real contending team and he'll be a hell of a threat in the postseason.

it would be a great pick up for the cubs to get peavy, but it just doesn't feel right giving up 6 players for one. couldnt the padres throu in like Luis Rodriguez or someone so we'll have a true backup third baseman? Does that sound stupid? i just dont like trading 6 for one player unless it's albert poujols haha.
