« Cafardo's Latest: Crede, Gagne, Rangers, Brewers | Main | Stephen Strasburg & Alex Meyer Interviewed »
The Associated Press is reporting the Blue Jays have dismissed Assistant GM Bart Given. This was briefly reported yesterday on MLBTR. Given served also as vice president of baseball operations and has been with the club since 2004. His duties will be managed by Tony LaCava and Alex Anthopoulos, front-office staffers.
No reason for the firing was provided. As Bob Elliot wrote yesterday, "Making a change on Jan. 23 is an odd time on the baseball calendar since most contracts expire at the end of October or December."

I believe this was mentioned in one of the "Odds and Ends" posts from yesterday(i.e. a post mentioning several news items).
Of course, not people commented on it then, so perhaps it deserves its own post.?!

Like Adam Dunn, Jay Riccardi discovered that Bart Given "Does not really like baseball..." and had to be fired immediately.

All I have to say is the next Pres. of the Jays will be a baseball guy and a business man so say goodbye to J.P.. We now did all the changes that can be made so next up is J.P..

Yeah, the new president is going to HATE the fact that JP has raised attendance each year he has been here and fielded competitive teams on limited budgets in the hardest division in baseball. He's also likely to ignore the fact that the team, according to Pythag, was one of the best teams in baseball last year. LOL.
As for Givens, it's weird. Even the diehardest of Jays fans have no idea who he is or what he did. He never did radio, TV, or print interviews and pretty much stayed out of the public eye. The other asst. GM, Alex Anthoupolous, gets all the attention along with Tony Lacava as possible in-house replacements for JP if he doesn't extend past 2010.

Well I'm a diehard Jays fan since the 70s and I never heard of the guy.
What I want to know is which member of the Rogers family is going to take over for the late Ted Rogers. Does he have a son or daughter who is a baseball fan? Are they going to build the franchise? cut spending? or sell?
Who is calling the shots now? I haven't seen much of anything in the Toronto media about the change in ownership.

pywhat?
i had never heard of "Pythagorean Expectation" so i checked it out on google.
---
Pythagorean Expectation is a formula that estimates how many games a team "should" have won based on the number of runs they scored and allowed.
---
*cough BS. coulda shoulda woulda, doesnt mean crap!
this is what i found from one site..
"Had both the 2008 Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays played up to their Pythagorean expectation, the Blue Jays, not the Rays, would have made the wild card.
Pythagorean Expectation Standings.
AL EAST
Boston Red Sox 95 - 67 Luck: 0
Toronto Blue Jays 93 - 69 Luck: -6
Tampa Bay Rays 92 - 70 Luck: 4"
*cough BS again.
it doesnt matter the pythagowhatver, you play the games and there is a winner and a loser. its not about how many runs scored compared to runs allowed.
im a Jays fan. would have loved to see them make the playoffs, but it didnt happen. did they get unlucky and TB got lucky? if so it doesnt matter. luck happens.
baseball isnt always about stats, there are other factors in baseball that decide things.
people try to break down the game wayyy too much. the game of baseball isnt just about statistics.

SpecialFNK, ignoring projected records makes it hard for you to be involved in a meaningful discussion about whether a move makes a team better. How can you discuss a player's offensive and defensive contributions except in runs, or in numbers derived from runs? (Oh, and it's on page 124 of Moneyball. How didn't you hear of it?)
