And the Cubs/Peavy rumors are back. Lets just hope that a deal gets done this time.

and quick...

Like a bad rash on the crotch, the Peavy rumors will not go away.
Posted by: ryno23 | January 23, 2009 at 12:03 PM
I would love to see Peavy in Cubbie blue before pitchers & catcher report on the 13th.
Posted by: Dr TL | January 23, 2009 at 12:08 PM
All those teams going to watch Benson aren't interested in Kris. They are just going with the hopes that Anna will do some "negotiating" to get her hubby a job.

What is the benefit of formally retiring?
Posted by: yanksfan | January 23, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Who is Benson's wife?
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 12:16 PM
Anna Benson is the one who dressed provocatively at a Christmas party thrown by the Mets several years back that little kids were at. Really classy lady.

Link to see Kris Benson's wife Anna.

Wow I just googled her. I remember now. Wow Tim can add that I will also be going to watch Kris Benson for the reason maybe his wife will be there

If you think you can get into the HOF in 5 years....Wells should hang up the cleets and call it a career...
Posted by: BravoFan3736 | January 23, 2009 at 12:24 PM
I would imagine that most, if not all, of Benson's audience would only be interested in offering him a minor league deal with a spring training invite.

>>Like a bad rash on the crotch, the Peavy rumors will not go away.
You're doing it wrong.
P.S. - is there anybody who DOESN'T think Peavy is going to be a Cub soon?
Posted by: Trivia Jockey | January 23, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Anna Benson she's a former stripper that you can find plenty of pics of on the internet.
Posted by: XD23 | January 23, 2009 at 12:25 PM
I would sign Kris so maybe his wife will be at the parties.
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Would you like to see Peavy in blue if it costs Vitters?
Posted by: hombrej | January 23, 2009 at 12:27 PM
My guess is that Kris isn't necessary to get Anna to "party".
Posted by: MickS | January 23, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Yes, Peavy will be a Cub.
And yes, the Cubs will soon regret the trade (Vitters, Olson, Stevens, Cedeno plus one more).
Posted by: MickS | January 23, 2009 at 12:30 PM
As much as I want Peavy on the Cubs..I don't want to get rid of Vitters. He's going to be a stud in a few years..if not sooner.
Posted by: Dr TL | January 23, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Yes I believe Peavy is worth more then Vitters. Is there any chance of keeping Vitters in a trade for Peavy. I have read in a few different sources that it could be possible although I dont believe it is. Especially since Vitters is the #14 prospect in baseball and is the #1 3rd baseman prospect in baseball according to Keith Law from ESPN.
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 12:32 PM
David Wells? LOL What a waste of typing talking about that guy!
He is what 48 years old with a 70 mph fastball and a huge beer belly?
Posted by: optionn | January 23, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Hope Mulder bounces back. I always liked him when he was on the A's. Would love to see my dodgers take a chance on him.

I almost half-expect a white sox - wells article now
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | January 23, 2009 at 12:53 PM
uww1,
While I like Law's rankings, he has Hanson #9 overall and #4 among pitchers, you also have to take them with a grain of salt because he'll be the first person to tell you he's not a professional scout. As he mentions in the write up as well, Vitters still needs to make significant improvements in his approach or his ceiling will start dropping. Next year is going to tell us a lot about Vitters and whether or not he's going to start making the necessary adjustments.
As for the Cubs getting a Peavy deal done, I think it really depends on what they're willing to give up now. If there offer is only going to be Vitters, Olson, Stevens, Cedeno, and one more, that last guy is probably going to have to a fairly valuable piece. Something along the lines of one of the Cubs really young SS prospects like Lee, Castro, or Lake. Even then that deal might still be iffy.
I don't think the Padres are in nearly as much of a rush to deal Peavy as Cubs fans would like to believe. Unless Giles has flatly said he won't approve a trade anywhere, I think they'll attempt to wait out the Cubs on Peavy knowing they can deal Giles to get where they want payroll wise.
Posted by: nixa37 | January 23, 2009 at 12:58 PM
I think the deal has a pretty good chance of going through and I don’t think the Cubs will have to unload what little farm they have to get him. Vitters is a given, but other than that, I highly doubt it’s going to cost the Cubs top-flight talent. A lot of scouts consider Vitters a future all-star 3rd baseman – if that holds true, Vitters alone is a nice pickup for the Padres. The Padres are also said to be high on Garrett Olsen and Kevin Hart…so it’s a possibility they’ll be included as well. Cedeno is a low cost replacement for Greene. This deal works for the Padres. They get a potential all-star, a starting pitcher, a short reliever with a 94-96 mph fastball in Kevin Hart and a starting SS. All in all, it’s a nice step toward rebuilding. I don’t see the Padres getting a whole lot more than this. The Cubs do have that glut of lower level SS prospects but if they give any of them up, it would be Lake. The trend for teams trading top of the rotation pitchers (Sabathia, Santana, and Harden) has been that only one top tier prospect gets traded. The one exception to the deal is the Erik Bedard deal. But after Bavasi gave in out of desperation and got burned, I doubt we’ll see another team mortgage anything close to that much in a deal again.

"Unless Giles has flatly said he won't approve a trade anywhere"
I'm pretty sure that this is a real possibility. Giles has said he doesn't want to go anywhere, and they have tried to trade him before to a winning team.
I agree with Nixa, Vitters has a very, very important year ahead of him. If he learns a little better plate discipline, he will shoot up the rankings...if he never does, Vinny Castilla becomes a comp...which isn't bad, but I'm hoping for even more.

Wells would be a great addition to any team. I am sure, now that he has diabetes, that he has been taking care of his health and is probably in the best shape of his life! The last half of his career hasn't been about pitching speed anyway, it has been about location. I believe he should be signed by the Yankees for 3/$30 or below market value for a Yankee signing.
Posted by: ellisburksrocks | January 23, 2009 at 01:21 PM
I dont disagree nixa. but as of right now Vitters has a very high trade value. He should get a pretty good return. I think Law has it pretty close though. Its very close to what I have seen on other websites. I have seen tommy hanson as low as #15. I would say Hanson is the 4th best pitcher on the list is about right. He was 66 last year I would say that is quite a jump in one year.
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 01:32 PM
Aduncaroo,
I think if the Cubs keep Vitters and he does makes that big leap forward (which some expect him to do) – the Cubs would take him off the table in any trade discussions next year. If the Padres want to land someone with Vitters potential, I think they’ll need to take that chance this year. There’s only two things allowing Vitters to be available right now 1) the Cubs are in win-now mode and 2) the fact that he hasn’t established himself at higher levels of the minors. If the shoots up the system next year he not only becomes one of the elite prospects in the game, but he becomes someone who can help the Cubs in the very near future, possibly as soon as 2010.
Posted by: crunchy1 | January 23, 2009 at 01:34 PM
There has been talk that Vitters could take Lee's spot at first
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 01:38 PM
I would rather them wait and let Vitters continue to work on his defense, which many say has made big improvements already, and see if Aram opts out of his deal after 2010. If he does, Vitters would look very nice at 3rd. Heck, Hoffpauir might be able to put up a line of .280/.350/.475 with at least average defense, so why not just give him a shot as see what happens? Just an option to think about...because he costs pretty much nothing. If you could occupy 1st and 3rd with +.825 OPS players for next to nothing (obviously maybe niether of them make that), than think of the money the cubs could spend on other things...
Best case scenario is that Hoffpauir plays RF when/if Bradley gets hurt, hits like he did in AAA last year, and he continues to do that as our new 1st basemen after Lee goes. It may not be probable, but it could definitely happen.

I hate to think that A-Ram will opt out of his contract. He took a home town discount for a reason because he loves chicago. Why would he want to go.
Posted by: uww1 | January 23, 2009 at 02:19 PM
A-Ram wouldn't necessary want to go, but if he continues to produce he may use the opt-out in order to get a new deal, just like he did a couple years ago.

BravoFan - Rickey Henderson never officially retired, so it doesn't effect your HOF eligibility.
Posted by: yanksfan | January 23, 2009 at 04:19 PM
Hey all lets not get to excited remember last year the roberts deal was said to be all but done and after months of waiting notta,i say hope for peavy but don't be so sure its a done deal.
Posted by: justme | January 24, 2009 at 12:06 AM
Will the Peavy deal get done??
Probably, for the following reasons.
1.This is not the Orioles and McPhail that want at least a 5-1 ratio of return on his players. McPhail robbed the Mariners (5 prospects for Bedard)and the Astros (5 prospects) for Tejada. Now it is possible that this may become a 5-1 trade for the Cubs, but unlike the Baltimore trades the Cubs are likely only to give up 1 top prospect.
2a.) Ownership, Cubs have new owners that are willing to spend for a player like Peavy.
2b.) Ownership, Padres are in the process of being sold, even tho there is a potential buyer it might take a while to sell the team, in the meantime the current ownership is stripping away the talent to get to a $40 million dollar budget.
3.) Peavy wants to win and with his current team slowly sinking into the depths of the NL west he could make it difficult for ownership.
4.) Expiring contracts and salaries.
The Cubs have 2 pitchers locked up as follows.
Zambrano 4/5 years left
Signed thru 2012
vesting player option 2013
Dempster 3/4 years left
Signed thru 2011
player option 2012
This is where it could get a litle messy for the Cubs.
Rich Harden 1 year $7 miilion
Signed thru 2009--If he has an injury free 15-20 win season, he will be looking for a Lowe/Burnett type of salary and quite possible could get it.
Ted Lilly 2 years $24 million
Signed thru 2010.
Lilly if he continues could hit the jackpot. He will make $12 million the next 2 years and he has made himself into a dominating lefty in hos 2 year with the Cubs.
59/57 4.54 before the Cubs 6 seasons.
32/17 3.96 with the Cubs 2 seasons.
So to conclude 2009 the Cubs dont need Peavy(loaded rotation) but in the upcoming years his slary is palatible.
2010-2012 3 years $52 million plus a $ 22 million club option in 2013 is cheap for a pitcher that is better than Lowe or Burnett.

Am I the only one who feels it would be smarter to sign Sheets to a two year incentive laden deal instead of trading 5-7 prospects for Peavy? Keep the prospects that we have and lose one draft pick. Seems a fair trade-off to me.
Posted by: VerizonWireless | January 24, 2009 at 11:33 AM
im for sheets, but as it stands right now we have to many pitchers on our roster right now.we have to trade like2-3 of them b4 we could sign sheets,or trade 2-3 plus vitters and scrubs to get peavy.im for peavy, and i still think they pull the trade off in the next few days.im very excited to get ricketts as owner.his family has almost twice as much as steinbrenners, and more then cuban.as for padres,i read that moorad will not be taking majority control for 2-4 years,so as it stands they are over there payroll still by almost 5 million.they have to make a move.
Posted by: cubbie75 | January 24, 2009 at 03:46 PM
Yeah I agree with VerizonWireless, put sheets and Guadan together and HArden and MArshall together and they should not get hurt
Posted by: bobby p | January 24, 2009 at 03:53 PM
Any team can never have enough pitching, esp with the injury issues with Harden. Now if the Cubs sign Sheets it will mean they Cubs would have 2 injury risk pitchers in the roatation.
Posted by: ryno23 | January 24, 2009 at 08:32 PM
and we give the brewers our #1 pick...
